- This is my CalArts 2024 short film,"Olive Coffee."
The story unfolds through a day in the life of an elderly person venturing outside, set 50 years in the future, shaped by the advent of new biotechnologies. It weaves a beautiful narrative around themes of life, death, love, and choice. I hope you all enjoy this lyrical story.

UGH, MY HEART!!! 😭I knew Wendy used to be his wife the moment she introduced herself and I saw Oliver's expression; everything, from the art to the storytelling, is so well done in this short! Really thought provoking too. If given another chance at life, would it even be worth it if you had to give up the memories and cherished moments of loved ones that made life worth living in the first place? So good! ❤❤

This genuinely made me cry, the animation, the voice acting, the staging, all perfect
I wonder if he was waiting to see her again before he made a decision on the rebirth. Even if somehow he was reborn at the same time and they met again, they'd have no memory of the prior life and couldn't appreciate it. Well, he got to see how spot on the rebirth was, she even got to keep her name.
I think he made his decision a long time ago: he wasn't going to be reborn. That's why he said sorry at the end.
@@junepassingthrouthegate8810 Of course, they showed that. I'm asking maybe he chose that so he could see her again in this same life and see how it turned out. He might be regretting the decision seeing how she is the same and maybe things could've been different. Mostly thinking about it because it was apparently weighing on his mind from start to finish

The ending made me tear up so much, and the beautiful animation plus story made it even better, awesome work and for me a very emotional roller coaster while watching it.

Are these tears running down my face? *stubbornly shoves a tissue in my face* Nope, who told you such lies. 😭 This was such a gorgeous gorgeous animation, everything was done so well, and the feels got right to the heart. Awesome job!
Wait I get confused easily, so he didn’t want to rebirth with her to keep the memories of her alive but signed for her to be rebirthed and found her at the exact same coffee shop once more?
His wife chose to rebirth (it was her signature on the contract), but rebirth caused her to lose memories of her past life (hence why she’s now the new young employee at the coffeeshop, but didn’t recognise her old husband, and didn’t remember her past life’s love of Americano with olive oil).
He chose not to sign the rebirth contract, because he wanted to hold on to his memories.

This is so good bro-the art and lighting and backgrounds are peak 🥺. The story has a unique originality to it as well, it’s so easy to connect to the characters and get a feel for the world they live in early on, which is real tough to pull off in a matter or minutes. Keep doing what you do, this animation is great! :D

used in biotechnology
is genetic engineering,
which allows scientists
to modify the genetic
makeup of organisms
for achieving any desired
outcomes.
This can involve inserting
genes from one living
organism into another
and consequently create
new traits or modifying
existing ones.
What I found interesting in this animation was the wonders of olive oil that kept him going similar to the oldest woman who survived 120yrs

Also this thing's so dystopian, like, in teen dystopias, everyone's aware that the system's weird and effed up, but in reality people just accept it as something normal and live out their normal lives in it. THIS IS LIKE, DYSTOPIA PERFECTED!

The animation and art is very beautiful with nice character designs, the script seems awkward and forced at times or drags out too long which decreases the quality of the scenes despite the excellent camera angles.
You have a great skills and passion for illustration and physical perspective, but it’s good to take into account mental perspectives and filmmaking, even if this world may not be familiar to the audience, it is to the characters. You have the potential so use it to show and not just tell.
Make sure you do a good job today 💯

From what I understand, Oliver didn’t want to be rebirthed while his wife did. The one barista is his rebirthed wife and chose not to tell her, which is what he’s apologizing for at the end
