Foose Design Hand Built Roadster "Impression" Full Length Walkthrough

  • "Impression", a hand built roadster with removable top, is perhaps the finest vehicle to come out of Foose Design. Based on a unique Chip Foose design, the objective was to create the perfect styling for a mid-30's roadster. It contains over 4,000 individual hand built parts, which were machined and fabricated. In fact, only 3 OEM parts can be found on the vehicle: the LS1 engine, the transmission and the center section of the rear end.
In this video, Chip Foose tours you around "Impression" in comprehensive detail. He shares stories, designs, pictures, renderings and background on the build and intimately discusses the major sections of the vehicle including the "Flatisphere" Engine, Custom Interior, Grille, Headlights, Taillights, Bumpers, One- Off Wheels, Custom Cut Tires, Trunk & more. In order to thoroughly examine the Undercarriage, the vehicle is lifted on a rack as Chip runs you through the custom design elements of the Frame, Suspension, Exhaust, Rear End & more. Amazingly there was more time spent on the underside of the vehicle than on the top exterior.
"Impression" took 7 years to complete and has captured awards in every competition it has entered, including the Ridler Award and America's Most Beautiful Roadster.
This is the most in-depth look at the "Impression" build ever created. Should you prefer to jump ahead to certain sections of the walkthrough we have carved out several stand-alone videos. Links below:

    IMPRESSION STORY
They say some of the best ideas begin as doodles on a napkin. Well, the first concept sketches of Impression were no different. During a dinner with Ken Reister, armed with only a pen and without his trusty sketchpad, Chip reached for the closest item available, his dinner napkin. So began a 7 year odyssey that would lead to the creation of perhaps the finest vehicle to come out of Foose Design.
The objective was to create the perfect styling for a mid-30’s roadster. The result was a unique Foose design, a sleeker and longer version of the stock 1936 & 1937 Fords. Impression became one of the rare winners of both America’s Most Beautiful Roadster and the Detroit Autorama Ridler Award.
After their dinner meeting, Chip refined the sketch & sculpted a 1/4 scale model of the design out of clay. Shortly thereafter, work began on the custom chassis, as the wheel base, ride height and suspension components were all established. Next, a mold was pulled from the clay model, which served as the template for the fabrication of a full-size wooden buck to shape the metal over. As assembly & metal forming continued, the timely fabrication process of the parts and components was started.
Impression was not meant to be your average show car, it contains over 4,000 individual hand built parts that were machined and fabricated. Brackets, covers, suspension pieces, trim, mirror, door handles and pedals were just some of the pieces that received the highest level of attention. In fact, only 3 OEM parts can be found on the vehicle; the engine, the transmission and the center section of the rear end. Everything else is handmade, even the tires were custom molded as blanks with a handcut custom tread pattern.
More time was spent on the underside of the vehicle than the exterior. The 1/8″ gap between panels was maintained throughout the undercarriage. Brake lines, components and wiring were all hidden underneath. All mechanical fastners have been covered or shrouded, even the shock mounts on the A-arms have custom caps.
Some of the more impressive design elements are also the most subtle. A repeating theme found throughout is the presence of soft-sided triangles. That shape can be found on the pattern of the pedals, the cross-section of the A-arms, the windshield posts, the rear exhaust, the interior accents, the wheels and the side trim, to name a few. Also, you'll find the iconic Ford V8 logo not only above the grille and on the center cap of the wheels, but as an illusion created by the headlights custom lens and metalwork.
Truly a masterpiece of hot rod design and elegance, Impression still appears at various car shows across the country. It serves as a benchmark of success for all the hard work done at Foose Design.

I wish I had the money to have you use your amazing talent to rebuild my dad's 1940 Chevy Special Deluxe Coupe. He sold it in 1976 and died in a car accident two months later. After searching for 38 years, I found it and was able to purchase it. It has sat in my garage for seven years because I don't have the skill or knowledge to rebuild it and mod it like I have envisioned. But, I'm going to man up and start on it. I hope that I can do a good enough job that my dad would have been proud.
By the way, your work is outstanding, I love seeing the finished cars. You are a true visionary. Thanks for making and sharing your videos.

I love how Chip never fails to give credit where it's due... and it's almost always what "we did", and very seldom what "I did". Even when he does not his personal touches, you can tell it's not boasting... it's passionate.

I visited Chip at his shop and was extremely lucky that Impression was there at the time. The car is pure artwork and totally stunning. Chip is an awesome person and he drew a 32 Ford on a shirt and signed it to me and my wife. Thanks Chip, you are the man.

Even after the extensive explanation, I don't think the average person would realize just how incredible this car is. I think even the owner is still finding new details to admire to this day. This is the height of art.

I agree 100% David having built a couple of cars myself I'm most impressive thing to me is the amount of time I'm thinking it took to build the car since so much of it was hand built as they were putting the car together, so I'm sure there are many, many hours worth of time in hand making all the parts that were created before the car was put together and finished and I'm thinking only Chip has a clue how many man hours went into the building and finishing of "impression"😊😮😂😅😊

I've come to a conclusion. That is Chip Foose is untouchable in the automotive industry, hands down!!! You can tell not only by the tangible automotive art he has created but also in which the way he speaks about his automotive art he's created! I also want to give a shout out to the technicians or as Chip would say his team, along with Chip Foose they craft and mold this automotive art and are also on another level! Thank you to all of you!

What an absolute pleasure to see how your craftsman who work with you, pull such an amazing piece together, I particularly liked when you instructed them to pretend the piece they were working on would be viewed as a center piece....looks like they did...flawless is a word thrown around all too after, it absolutely applies here. Thank you again and please post often, we enthusiasts really appreciate it.

But yet also so humble with any praise he gets for his tremendous designs. Design innovation like this is one of the sweetest things about life - the ability to create... and to create for the sheer love of it. When we create form love, it gives something to Universe, and in turn, we feel it come back to us many-fold (pun intented). I great admire and respect your work Mr Foose. Your work is always so harmonic and holistic. congruent and fluid. Your pursuit of beauty in creation is inspiring on a deeper human level. You and your crew are incredible. Not all master pieces hang on a wall, it's nice to see one that rolls. That is the nicest car I've ever seen. Thanks for building it. Take care.

Chip, that last thing you said was also the key to success in my 45 year career as a designer... you're only as good as your customer allows you to be. As this video shows, just let great designers run with their ideas and something timeless may result.

What the Guggenheim museum would call, "modern" retro? What I call, my daily driver! I'm of the mind that...if ya don't drive it, why own it! Chip really does the old school master/grandmasters real props! If I had the money, I'd really appreciate Chips style and design signature! It really is his staff of craft people whom make it happen! Now if I could only get him to built out my dream car! That 1967 El Camino w/ 4 wheel drive...I small lift of course! Perhaps a nicely fitted canopy? Well...I can dream..on. This floating taillights? Yeah...That knocks me out!
