I was born in Central America and remember eating these as a kid. They're delicious, I only wish they sold them in bags as big as the ones in this video :P
I read all these negative comments and I'm ashamed, these people don't get to choose where they are born, I like the fact that they are making their own way in the world playing the cards they are dealt with. Some people are best to say nothing, at least that way they can feel superior in there own mind, and not look like a complete fool here.
Shayne Rice I so agree with you. I went to this Chinese restaurant the waiter dropped the bun on the floor and placed the plate on costumers table. Tell me do you think that's clean,no. So don't complain about hygiene these people are doing their best I have bought from not so clean vendors what do I do,Pray. Yes I would eat those plantains I don't know why they call them bananas they are not. For everyone who complains about hygiene think twice American restaurants aren't any better. Watch behind the kitchen doors and I'll find out what disgusting is!

My husband and I are Americans. My husband worked in Malayasia & Indonesia, we bought banana chips from street vendors all the time, big batches. The chips were cooked in the blackest of black oil I've ever seen outside crankcase oil, but those banana chips were the BEST tasting snacks we've ever eaten. The temp of the oil was so high, it would kill any germ or bug. Hubby & I never got sick from eating the chips. We practially could hardly go a day without them. We never got sick from any foods over there. Although the chips are the only street food we ever ate. Mainly ate in our own apt. or hotel restaurant. We also ate a LOT of times in the 5* places. Mainly inviting corporate execs. and they invited us other times. Banana chips were still our favorites. Can't get them here in the States.
I have had all sorts of chips in many parts of the world, but nothing comes close to this Nendran chips they make in pure coconut oil in Kerala and few parts of Tamil Nadu. Agree with other posts that it tastes like heaven when it's eaten fresh. It beats any competition by wide margin and many are not even a comparison. So much so when I have access to this one, I wouldn't even look at other imposters like Lays and Haldirams :)
I bet the bananas taste amazing straight off the vine. It’s interesting that they use not yet ripe bananas. I would imagine they are firmer to put through the slicer. Makes me want to try this at home. Brilliant idea for them to harvest and sell them as chips.
When too much cleaning goes wrong... Microorganisms, such as t-cells which defends against bacteria and virii [sic: viruses]. But without it, they will turn into an "idiot" microorganisms when they enter that is not harmful, triggers to protect it. And thus, the allergy is born. Also some of allergens can kill you just like virii, cancer and the bacteria. Then better to talk about hygiene hypothesis though
The Bananas were on the soil, he just removed the outer part, did not even mind washing it, I am sure chips would tastes better with all the extra ingredients :)

Yes, they are in the "banana family", but here at least, they are differentiated by name as Plantain and just plain "Banana". I'm sure they're called something else in other countries.
From what I gather plantains are bananas (2 or 3 types) that have a higher starch content than the others, allowing you to use it like a vegetable in the culinary sense of the word. When they ripen the starch turns to sugar and you can eat them like an ordiray banana. I spent a lot of time in Sri Lanka and the term plantain was used even for what we call bananas, so I guess it just comes down to what it is called where. They could be wrong but since the plant is endemic to South and South East Asia, I am not going to argue with them :)
