    As someone who has bikepacked near the AZ/ Sonora border and spoken with BP who said "We had eyes on you" I would say chances are BP knew you were there and determined you weren't a threat. Great videos JYF! I particularly enjoyed the one with you and your lady in my neck of the woods around Tucson. Keep up the good work!

    Flowing water is NOT a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is clean stagnant water.

      yes, and the flowing water slows to make stagnant water in the fields

    Thank you for your time in showing us this vid I live in Somerville TX we use to have an abandoned town outside of Brenham but they tore it down when people moved in and the neighbor farmers complained of the sewage smell since they ran it to a pond and they weren’t trying to buy the old 1900’s homes or paying property tax so yeah they were chased off and old homes torn down

    How weird, I have never heard of the owl pellets. I am currently camped at City of Rocks in New Mexico (I have seen you camp here before). I was in the office headquarters this morning and on their table in the sitting area there was a actual owl pellet with a tiny skull in it. That was the first I had ever heard of such a thing and then I was watching your video. Twice in one day! So bizarre! Man oh man, You got your boots dirty on this one!

      Owl pellets usually appear in large piles.because the owl regurgitating them usually does it at its roost.
      Some colleges and schools I've heard will and can buy them from you.

      Owl pellets carry pathogens. Be extremely careful in a closed room or especially a deer blind where barn owls left lots of pellets. You can get severe cases of bronchitis.

    Great stealth camping episode!
    When it gets buggy or really cold out I actually use the shemagh to cover my face! It's thin enough that I can breathe through it, thick enough to be a bug barrier, and a layer of insulation right up against my face which makes you feel warmer and comfortable more than any kind of actual warmth difference

  • @larryn8
    @larryn8 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    For stealth at night, best to use red light vs white light.
    Red light does not affect the rods and cones in your eyes, whereby white lights do. It takes approximately 30 minutes for your eyes to readjust to the dark after being subjected to white light at night.
    If you were using white light, wanted to extinguish it to remain conspicuous, you vision would be impaired in the dark then if you have not used red light.
    Of course, the alternative would be to wear an eyepatch over one eye preventing one from being exposed. That’s why pirates wore an eyepatch going from lighted topside decks down to the darker lower decks or holds of a ship they were attacking.

I thought I knew what lots of mosquitos were like- until I moved to coastal Ecuador. Now I get bitten several times on a GOOD day, lmao these guys are insistent and smart. Bats are good for getting rid of mosquitos. My mom has five giant bat houses around their house to help out plus they have a skeeter attracting machine that takes out thousands of them every night.
    When they go camping they have a whole bunch of candles in pots on poles that they stick in the ground around the campsite. I think they are citronella candles?

    Nice video. I always enjoy your over night camps. I live in the north of the country and I would like to share a modification to your tarp and blanket that really makes a difference for me. The blanket is a great insulator but has almost no wind resistance, the tarp is great against the wind but not an insulator. The blanket INSIDE the tarp will maximize the strength of both. I have added snaps to the edges of my blanket and tarp to hold them together and that makes an awesome bedroll that insulates, and resists both wind and rain. I use a queen blanket and tarp size so I can have half underneath me and half over me with one side and the ends left unfastened. This gives the advantages of a sleeping bag but can be flung open to respond to an emergency or distubance.

    • @scout06171

      That’s basically what we old military guys call a Jungle Roll. Good for to have figured it out by yourself.

    • @jamesmiddleton6464
      @jamesmiddleton6464 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@scout06171 To be honest, I was probably inspired by the jungle roll concept. I wasn't in the military (glasses too thick and asthma resulted in rejection) but there are plenty of ex-military in my circle of friends. There IS an advantage to my civilian version, I put snaps on several different blankets so I can tailor my insulating layer to seasonal conditions. It's a bit more versitile than the poncho and woobie combination as long as I pay attention to the weather. At this point I rarely use or even bring a sleeping bag because the freedom of movement and ability to easily regulate temperature by opening the roll or sticking a leg out is really more comfortable.

    • @JunkyardFox
      @JunkyardFox  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I originally tried that, nut the winds kept making my tarp fly off me, so I put the blanket on top to add weight

    • @jamesmiddleton6464
      @jamesmiddleton6464 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JunkyardFoxI DID listen to your explanation during the video. I meant my comment as more of a suggestion for modifications to the equipment for future use. In the moment, you do whatever you need to do to make it work for the night (which is what you did👍) another way to deal with the problem on the fly would be to use pebbles and small bits of cordage to tie the tarp and blanket together like tarp buttons on ridgelines or stake outs.

    Nice, James! I'll bet biting insects are responsible for spilling more human blood than all the wolves, bears and snakes put together. So, even if it's goofy looking, I don't go anywhere outdoors for very long without a proper bug net.
    Those big ol ants reminded me of a sample from the olden days, when they charged for telegrams by the word -- one message that saved some coin: "ANACIN HOSPITAL. ADAMANT BITTER ASININE PLACES." 😮
