My husband would never let me bring a worm bin on a road trip. He tolerates my worms at home, but he is not the biggest fan 😂. Last night we were talking about Christmas gifts. We don’t usually get each other gifts, we just buy for the kids and family. I told him that I actually have a few ideas for him this year. Normally he is REALLY hard to shop for, he never wants anything. He told me the only thing he can think of to get for me, is worms. I was like, ya that would be awesome. I would love more ENCs, but I don’t need anymore red wigglers. He laughed, and said he was just joking
😂🤣😂 That is hilarious!! Autumn actually got me this Urban Worm Bag for Christmas in 2022!! I think she thought I was kidding when I started asking for worms & worm gear too!! Thanks for making my day!!🪱🪱🪱
Wow, I'm early for once. I finally started my first worm bin and things are going well. It's been about 2 months and I think the population has increased 😁
😂🤣😂We caught you at the right time!! Congrats on starting your first worm bin!!!! You are done with the hardest part...getting started & the first month!! At the 2 month point new babies that were just being born when you started are mature and reproducing so you should see a pretty good population boom over the next 2 months!! I'm so excited for you!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Always fun to watch someone who really enjoy these processes and try to optimize it. I have a huge worm bin and feed it everyday, but its more of a waste handling operation i am running, adding some extra water and extra carbon once in a while, but not really overthink it 😀
Thank you!! I really do enjoy it! I want a worm bin I can run the way you run your huge bin!! I think this Urban Worm Bag may be a little too small but I'm gonna try to find out if I can do it!! Thanks so much for the great feedback and sharing how you run your worm bin!! And of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Thanks so much for stopping by to watch Jay!!🪱🪱🪱
Hey Pat & Autumn! ;) It doesn't look bad at all, but at the same time, I'm wondering if that's not a bit carbon heavy? Maybe only dig in the food scraps once, next time add shredded cardboard to it, etc? It seems like it's getting full a lot faster than it should. 😅 i mean, in the end you will either have to take out a ton of cardboard before sifting out the good stuff, or wait for ages for it to decompose (and spray a llt of water). Just the way I see it, anyway. 😊 Cheers guys! ;)
I agree!! I went a little heavy on the bedding, not really accounting for how much I was putting on with each daily feeding as I was trying to cover up the food. Going forward I think I'll try to use mostly what is already in there and maybe use some dirty paper towels and napkins to lightly cover anything hanging out! I don't want to have to sift what I pull out of here so your advice is spot on!! Thanks for sharing your thought & of course thanks so much for stopping by to watch Thomas!!🪱🪱🪱
I use a 2 liter pop bottle take a nail make several holes in lid and you have a squeeze bottle that you don't have to pump. It applies more water in far less time. My lazy tip of the day 😂
I love your lazy tip of the day!!! I pride myself in being the laziest worm farmer possible while maximizing my worm castings!! I'll give it a try!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Too funny! I do the same with gallon tea jugs. It makes it much easier to water them and allows me to have 10 gallons of water in the basement so I don’t have to worry about running out. I have a few bins so use about 4-5 gallons a week. I just refill once a week and let them gas off for a good long while.
Another great technique both with gallon tea jugs and having dechlorinated water always ready!!! Thanks for passing it along & of course thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
That is a great idea Tory!! Maybe shell and all since they seem to like to hide out in them! With all the extra worm traffic we're sure to find out if there is anything natural in those socks to chew on!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Hi Patrick and Autumn, mixing it up again, I like it. Little and often, isn't that the healthy way to eat. It will be interesting to see how this works for you over the next few months. That sock is still as good as new, apart from the staining. When you find the other sock it's going to be difficult to get a colour match. Have fun, Mark : )
🤣😂🤣 No chance it will ever be color matched to its mate!! I'm hoping little and often works well for both me and my Urban Worm Bag!! After I calm down on serving it up so much bedding I think this will be the easier way to go, and help keep our freezer less full!! Thanks for the good laugh and of course thanks so much for all your support Mark!!🪱🪱🪱
Your worm bag is really crankin! I totally agree about more frequent feedings as long as you have the bulk of carbon, moisture and a worm population that can handle it. The thing too is, if you go to feed in a couple days and there is still a lot of food then just skip it. I have to keep making room for the tomatoes in the freezer I am saving for canning. I think pre moistening the shredded material is a great idea, you could take it one step further. Make some vermicompost extract to wet down the shreds. You would be adding a ton of biology to help things get started. Just swish a couple handfuls of vermicompost in a mesh bag of unchlorinated water for about a minute, and your done. Enjoy your videos Patrick! Stay Well!!!
Great advice, I need to make sure I'm feeding for what the worms can handle not just to empty out the freezer!! I always have worm casting tea brewing so I could even wet down the cardboard shreds with some of that! So many things to experiment with!! I love it!! Thanks for the ideas & thanks so much for watching Brian!!🪱🪱🪱
Hi Patrick, you're doing a Schwarzenegger and bulking this bin up. I feel your strategy will start using the UWB to its full capacity/potential at processing food scraps. More frequent feedings probably will help retain moisture. ~ Sandra
💪I'm really liking this way of doing things in here!! I'm already seeing the benefits as my freezer is getting back to a reasonable amount of food scraps and my UWB is working overtime in a very balanced way!! As always, thanks so much for your input and advice & of course thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱
i don't shred cardboard, i just cut it down to a bunch of big pieces and put it in my bin... works fine as well! you could try it in your vermicompost-bin too...
That's great to here that your worms are devouring your cardboard with little effort!! I actually used to cut up my cardboard and put it in just like that...I found the more mature my worm bins were, the better they were at breaking down the bigger pieces. I do occasionally put bigger pieces in like whole paper towel rolls and the worms break them down by the time the levels gets to the bottom to harvest! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with cardboard & of course thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I like the way the system looks when you're looking around in the beginning. Hopefully the sock will continue to see a bunch of action. Perhaps - since you plan to feed this system more frequently, maybe the sock can be perpetually kept in the line of fire (?) :)
Thanks AV!! I like having an excuse to come in here daily and play with, I mean feed, my Urban Worm Bag!! After your towel disappeared so quickly, I expected at least a little progress on the sock...perhaps it isn't made of cotton like I thought it was!! Next time I dig it up, I'll start putting it under some of my daily feedings to keep it mission focused!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
When I recently fed socks to the worms I definitely found that certain portions of the sock are made of some kind of elastic synthetic material in addition to the cotton. The towel, on the other hand, seems to be made of virtually all cotton :)
Yes!!! I should have thought of that!! I'll put some in next time...I'm beginning to wonder if it's cotton like I thought!! Thanks for the great suggestion & of course thanks so much for watching Korey!!🪱🪱🪱
@TheDumplingMan Wow! Great memory!! Hopefully I get better results with this “cotton” sock…I have a feeling the burlap wasn’t made of burlap and this sock isn’t made of cotton!!
2 gallon pump sprayer is the lazy worm farmer’s friend 🤙. That sock may be a blend or full synthetic. Thought for sure (if all cotton) when you put it in it was going to be devoured over a couple months. Enjoy the content!
I need to get another pump sprayer for sure!! Believe it or not, I have two and despite my best efforts I have confused them and don't know which had chemicals in it and which one did not...so I need to get one that looks totally different😂🤣😂 I have a feeling you are right about the sock! I thought for sure we would have seen some progress, but I'm doubting how much cotton is in it, if any at all!! I'm so glad you're enjoying our videos!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I for the life of me cannot figure out how you keep you worms alive in the summer. I'm in central valley CA and we got up to 116° I did frozen water bottles in and in top but still 3/4 of my wormies died. I'm so sad. I have the remaining in the house and they're THRIVING but I couldn't bring in 10k worms.
116℉ that is hot!!! That's good to hear the ones you brought iside are thriving!! It never gets above 98-99℉ and it is super humid her in the Tampa Florida area...but this Urban Worm Bag can heat up during the afternoon for sure! I put 2-3 frozen water bottles on the surface in the morning and exchange them for 3-4 frozen water bottles on the surface in the afternoon. That keeps it in the mid 80's deep down in the bin and somewhere between 65-75 on my surface temperature sensor. If I forget the bottles for one day, the worms are all in a huddle on the top surface and when we go out of town we bring ht Urban Worm Bag inside. On the other hand, my Outdoor Worm Bag made of two 20 gallon fabric pots one inside the other is kept outside flush on the ground all day and does not require any frozen water bottles: th-cam.com/play/PLimznaPXKV08Y-7OifhRa_JBH0b5-nR-O.html I keep it in the shade and it does great!! I think the humidity helps me and those last 15 degrees of heat you have are probably hard to cool down in the central valley. My wife makes me keep my two bigger worm bins outside otherwise I'd have them all inside😂 I hope things cool down for you soon!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Thanks for the video and appreciate letting us see the different methods you change up and try yourself!! Have you done any videos regarding input feed weight to output castings weight? Like if 5lbs feed processed over night or so can produce exactly 5 lbs castings and if possibly different types of foods increased it? Thanks for any information and again awesome video!🤙
I have not done a input to output weight or volume data gathering but I should!! I think the variability in moisture might skew some results but it would be interesting to know about how much food scraps produces what volume or weight of worm castings!! It's a huge commitment so let me think about it before I make any promises😁 Thanks for suggestion (but not for the tons of additional work 😂🤣😂 ) & of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost haha 🤣 I’ll definitely do some of the work myself, I’m slowly working on how to make my first video for a channel just for my worms and am excited to try a lot of experiments! Again thank you and the entire worm tube for showing me personally how to share the fun love of little wigglers!🪱🤙
@@Vermicompost going to work on a mini bin tonight and just honestly gonna throw the video together in a first try. I need to quit putting it off and you and rocking worms honestly has me convinced to just get it going tonight after work haha thank you man! Sorry I comment so much time to put In some work!🤙🪱
Yes!! Just put the first video out there!! That is the hardest part...My first long form video is tough for me to watch but boy did it get things rolling!! I'm excited for you!!
I have some cherry tomatoes from my garden that have been in the freezer since last year. Do you think it would be okay to use those all in one feeding, or should I spread them out? I'm thinking tomatoes are one of the acidic foods that are recommended feeding in limited quantities...
That will be a great feast for them!! I would spread out the feeding over time to make sure they don't get overfed. Tomatoes can be a slow food depending on what else is fed with them and the worms may let the microbes have a longer try at them first. This is where we can get into trouble with feedings as over-feedings can ferment or go down the nitrogen cycle producing noxious gasses like ammonia. Luckily the worms will avoid areas that are too acidic for them until the microbes balance things out and start digesting the food...So go ahead and put them in in batches over different feedings and put them on one side of the bin so the worms can decide when they want to eat them!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Lisa!!🪱🪱🪱
In this bin I have a mix of Red Wigglers and Blue worms...but African Night Crawlers would love the amount of bedding I have in here right now!! This is also outside on my back Lanai here in the Tampa Florida area so ANC's would be well suited to the heat as well. But with my next daily feedings I will probably use more of the bedding I already have in here and less new bedding, until I get a better balance. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Unfortunately I think you're right!! It should have had a least a little bit of wear and tear on it from the worms, by now if it was made from cotton like I thought it was. I'll keep it in there for a while to see if it breaks down at all, but then I'll stop replacing it under the food and let it come out with the castings. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment!!🪱🪱🪱
Lots of cardboard! I can never make enough. Thinking of using these expired pellets used for pellet stove as temporary option. They worked last year as an experiment. Very dense.
If it wasn’t for my mom making us cardboard shreds I’d be in serious trouble with bedding!! Best purchase I made was getting her one of these awesome shredders😂 That’s pretty cool the pellets worked as bedding!! Was it slower than shredded cardboard? I imagine it took a while to get rehydrated??!? Thanks so much for watching Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost I would say yes, the pellets took longer to compost, but I only tested it with a small amount of worms in a small bin where the worms were captive. We shall see in these outdoor bins how well it does. 🙂🪱🪱🪱
Mites are actually a part of a well balanced ecosystem system in a worm bin. There are thousands of different mite species and the ones that thrive in a worm bin only feed on dead or decaying matter…so no worries about them harming your plants if any are left when you use your worm castings. For the most part they are in the worm bin in small numbers and help to shred the food scraps and eat extra or overfed scraps. When they become a problem or rather an indicator of a problem is when you start to see a huge population bloom of them. This typically means that the bin is being overfed & starting to get more acidic. So bottom line, mites are worm bin helpers but rapid increases of their population could be an indicator of worm bin issues. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching & asking a great question!! 🪱🪱🪱
I'm really enjoying getting in here so much more often!! I think this method will keep this bin full and the worm castings flowing!! Thanks for stopping by Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
Great point!! You definitely don't want to overfeed your worm bins!!! There are somewhere between 8,000 to 10,000 Red Wiggler & Blue worms in here so they should be able to take care of the food scraps I put in over the next 2-3 weeks as I continue with smaller daily feedings. But when I first started this bin, the feedings were much, much smaller than this!! th-cam.com/video/6S8j0HdRz_o/w-d-xo.html I've been slowly increasing their feedings as the population has grown over the last year & a half or so, but i'm always adjusting with every bit of data the worms give me in the form of uneaten food scraps!! Thanks so much for taking the time to pass on your observations & of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
That's what I'm afraid of with this sock!! Surely it would have had at least a nibble if there was any cotton in it. I thought for sure they were made of cotton or some kind of cotton blend, but clearly I must be wrong!! Thanks so much for watching and letting me know about the content of most socks!!🪱🪱🪱
It is just an experiment to see if they will eat it...they will break down natural fiber clothes like cotton...but I think this sock maybe totally synthetic!! Thanks so much for asking a great question and thanks for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
🤣😂🤣 So true!! But now that I'm feeding everyday (versus every 3 weeks or so) we have a lot more space in our freezer and my Urban Worm Bin is filling up faster!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch & leave a comment!!🪱🪱🪱

Thank you Joe!! This bin is so much fun to manage and experiment with!! Thanks so much for taking the time to drop in and watch!!🪱🪱🪱
i don't shred cardboard, i just cut it down to a bunch of big pieces and put it in my bin... works fine as well! you could try it in your vermicompost-bin too...
Keep up the great work.
Thanks AJ!! We appreciate your support from the earliest days of our channel!!🪱🪱🪱
Looks amazing!!!
Thank you!! I love your new logo!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost yeah the logo it just something better you could not even read the words in the old one!
I like the way the system looks when you're looking around in the beginning. Hopefully the sock will continue to see a bunch of action. Perhaps - since you plan to feed this system more frequently, maybe the sock can be perpetually kept in the line of fire (?) :)
@@A-V I’m curious what would happen if the sock was filled with an avocado 🥑 or if that would be overkill lol 😆
I'll give it a try so we can see!! Thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
When I recently fed socks to the worms I definitely found that certain portions of the sock are made of some kind of elastic synthetic material in addition to the cotton. The towel, on the other hand, seems to be made of virtually all cotton :)
You should put some food scraps in the sock next time
Yes!!! I should have thought of that!! I'll put some in next time...I'm beginning to wonder if it's cotton like I thought!! Thanks for the great suggestion & of course thanks so much for watching Korey!!🪱🪱🪱
Yeah, like with the burlap sack two years ago! :D
I must be a super duper lazy worm farmer I have the Makita battery powered 4 gallon sprayer works great 👍

Awesome!! I just saw one of your shorts on this channel!! Let us know when you start the new one!!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost thanks so much for the advice! I'll just include a few in each feeding to be on the safe side. :)
👍👍👍
Hello what kind od worms do you have in this worm been. ? I am intresting because yuo used a lot of carbon food :)
I think your sock is going to contain a fair amount of elastic and other synthetic materials.
Still very impressive!!
Are mites an issue?
Yes 🎉 building up the bin. The worms are going to go nuts.,🪱👍🏼😃
I'm really enjoying getting in here so much more often!! I think this method will keep this bin full and the worm castings flowing!! Thanks for stopping by Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
Sure seems you are over feeding.
I can't find socks with more than 42% cotton. the rest is man made.
What is the purpose of the sock? 🤔
It is just an experiment to see if they will eat it...they will break down natural fiber clothes like cotton...but I think this sock maybe totally synthetic!! Thanks so much for asking a great question and thanks for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Your over thinking basics dude.
