  • A young mother and her 6 y/o child were found deceased in this late evening apartment building fire. The call came in around 11pm and was fully involved when the first firefighters arrived. There are no hydrants in the area so tankers and dump tanks had to be utilized to supply water to put out the fire.

    Prayers for the Mother and her child. No Hydrants and apartment building fully involved when firefighters arrived it is best to just do a control burn where no one gets hurt.

    For all the TH-cam firefighters, you wouldn't use the deck gun based on water availability (which was limited). You'll dump a tank in seconds and with that size of fire, will have accomplished nothing except wasting water. Welcome to rural firefighting, where water supply is a creek if you're lucky, most hydrants are shit and can barely supply 1 truck and you have about 15 head working a fire once again if you're lucky.Tankers and drop tanks are your only chance to put this size of fire out. Let's face it, that house was not survivable upon arrival and entry would have been suicide. I'm in a small rural fire department so I know the challenges. We train harder because of our small volume of calls (average 120/yr) and many of us have been through a fire academy. If you're not in a local volunteer fire department or know jack Squat about the challenges we face, your opinion means nothing so join up or shut up. 30 yrs on the job.

      Fire Guy I agree with you. I’m a volunteer and in some parts of our first due area there are no hydrants and we have to go to tanker ops. Also before any TH-cam firefighters start bashing the volunteers ask yourselves some questions. How advanced was the fire before it was reported? Is this a rescue or a body recovery? What are the resources as far as manpower? Where is the nearest water source? What about weather conditions?

      @@michaelboccino5251 Hydrants are only as good as the water source supplying them. Other limitations are pipe size to the water supply and location. We have some big waterfront housing developments with mega houses (excess of 2500sq ft, sitting 15 ft off the ground) and our hydrants are rated from 0-499 gpm....basically pick a number on the lower side of 300gpm and that's it! That's not enough to supply one working engine much less a master stream. People think that going to the next Hydrant up will help make up the difference...but wait they're on the same main line feeding it soooooo yeah anything you think you gained, the other Hydrant loses out. We depend a lot on tanker shuttles from drafting operations. Oh yeah I forgot to mention...tax dollars paid for the crappy water.

    Sadly this fire was beyond saving much on arrival. My experience tells me when faced with this situation use available tank water to stop the spread of exterior ground fire then once there is sufficient water supply from tanker shuttle or firefighters can extinguish what is left.

      When you arrive at a structure that’s fully involved you primary want to limit the fire extension and radiant heat damage to neighboring structures, it will depend on the availability to water. If you have an adequate water supply you will ‘surround and drown’, which means dumping water on it from all sides, but big fire usually requires big water. As to where you direct your master stream it’s best practice to try and hit the base of the fire, hitting the tops of the flames just produces steam, your main aim is to remove one element of the fire tetrahedron, the heat part, the fuel part, the oxygen part or the chemical reaction part. In a fire like this you’re really inly able to remove the heat/chemical reaction part, by cooling the fuel part. Hope this helps explain the thought process behind fire fighting.

      The description said there were no hydrants. Depended on multiple tankers to transport water to the scene. Tankers dump water into what looks like an above ground pool and then go get more water.

      didn't matter, when you show up at 11pm and the fire is burning like that, I don't care if you had 20 hydrants lined up in a row, there was nothing stopping this fire until it ran out of fuel. Fought a lumber yard fire 33 years ago this July in Westerly RI and the only thing that stopped that fire, it ran out of stuff to burn and we had hydrants plenty of trucks and man power

We are trained to know what types of situations would allow for a tenable or survivable environment, unfortunately for these poor souls, it was not the case. Otherwise they'd definitely do whatever they could to save them.

    • @enid0mom
      @enid0mom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Glaum It May not have been multi family when it was built. It was probably converted at some point. That must not have had working smoke alarms and definitely no sprinkler system. Counties can be pretty lax on building codes. I live in an unincorporated part of what is especially and urban area in Harris County, Texas (Houston). Almost all cities have regulations on fireworks. Not the county. I worry every New Years Eve, July 4th, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and what seems like just random times that a residence will be set on fire. Living right at the very edge of the city limits can be just as bad.
      PS Just found an article on the fire. It was built in the 18th century and other occupants who got out said the alarms were sounding. So my assumptions were off on some things and right on others.

    I realize that they weren't going to knock down the fire with just tank water, but not laying a supply line and doing NOTHING is INEXCUSABLE. It was clearly obvious that they should've laid a supply line up the drive, and used the deck gun or at least a 2 1/2" line and dumped the tank.
