Ridiculously easy to use once the ground work is done and so so flexible. It really is the best time to be a guitarist these days. Thank you so much for the demo. Also loved to hear some of the pedals i hadn't heard before
Thanks Brett you crammed some sound into this session. You gave me some great ideas as to how I run my signal chain. Some things are just common sense but I followed every little bit logged into the ES-8 mate you nailed it, what an awesome piece of kit. You introduced me to liquid ambience......same thing gotta have the detail. Great work mate you make every word just like everyday sense and no dry as a bone lifeless words. Between yourself and Pete Thorn I'm where I want to be within the sound.
Picked up a Cali76 CD because of this video. Great unit for not only compressing but for sweetening your sound. And very transparent. Oh and due to this video the Boss Es-8 as well. lol
I had to order the Cali76 compact deluxe after watching a few hours of videos on it, The dry control is what seems to keep the real sound while it’s compressing the signal. That’s a very organic feature to have on a compression pedal IMO. I already have 2 modified MXR dyna comps, a stock dyna comp, the super comp and a Boss CS-3, none of them let the clean notes reach the volume it should and result in a squished sound that truly robs some of the amps natural tone. I have an Orange MK2 100 watt Rockerverb that sounds fantastic by itself but being a Tube Amp it needs something to calm down the imperfections and volume spikes. Man this is such a great video to bring to light how to connect all the pedals together and simplify using them in the order desired and in parallel or series. This ES-8 is on the top of the priority list, I haven’t been able to find a way to utilize my pedalboard the way it can be without dancing on the pedals and that never works out too good. Awesome Video, Great Sounds, Great Display and Cool Channel… Cheers from Fort Mitchell, Alabama in the USA!!
I want one!!! Man, this is a great value. Absolutely amazing features. The way I play though, I probably don't need it since I feel like I leave everything on, stack, and tweak knobs with my foot depending on the moment. Oh well, I'll buy one anyway.
Great video Brett. Greetings from Tasmania. I am a regular viewer of your videos. I was thinking of getting a Carl Martin Octa-switch. But, I think I'll invest in this one instead the Boss ES-8. Good work.
Excellent video, best I have seen on ES8 with concise descriptions. I downloaded the manual and in usual fashion Boss are not great on giving examples as I found with the RC300. I think you may have just switched me to getting one.
Thanks for this. its super useful as i've been looking in to getting one of these and i await your MIDI video as i'm really interested in the MIDI capability of this.
Great video. I have the gigrig g2 at the moment and love it. I like this but as always I still see the downside. They need to put a small screen above each foot switch so everything is named and when you bank up or down it switches so you know what everything is. Also I think it needs more than 8 inputs really. Other than that it's excellent. Let's hope they release an updated version or an even more pro version. At least they have released a small version of the Cali 76 finally !!! Woooo
always wanted to leard to play guitar since I was a young boy - now I'm an old man and the last thing I want to do is learn to play guitar. I invested in a good guitar and amp, got a pedalboard some effects similar to what you have, with the last 3 being strymon (timeline) (Mobius) (Big sky) have it all set up with a Boss ES-8, I'm learning but I would love to see you do the MIDI episode you talked about. Sounds Great
@ Tony W I can't reply to you (or anyone else) if your 'reply' option is grayed out. All credits for the gear are below the video. Free The Tone supplied all of the solderless jacks and cable. It's the best around.
yeah that's weird I can't reply to Toni or the guy after him either but I can reply to you and some others. weird TH-cam. nice router pedal Burgs - very useful.
Hi Brett, just wondered with the ES8 do you have to use a ground loop such as a the Lehle P-Split to make sure your amps don't suffer ground hum? Or is the ES8 internally equipped?
I was listening for those unwanted hiss and screeching noises and am very surprised at how quiet this set up is, Totally professional sound that’s quality and desirable, easy on the ears and in stereo, Total Win all the way around!
Thanks for the info Brett. I've been looking for a pedal switcher for a little while now, and your video really helps me decide on spending a bit more for this model. I'm looking forward to your "102" video for midi control. I'm wondering if Boss or Eventide have better info on how to get the Eventide under control for creating presets. I've been using my iPad to control my Eventide H9 for about a year, but I like the idea of controlling it via the Boss es. Thanks again. Happy new year.
Hi Brett. Great demo as ever. Have you had the chance to look at the new Boss MS-3 fx/loop switcher yet? Would be great if you could show us the ropes on that. Cheers, Rich, UK
Hi Rich. Thanks for the kind words. I haven't laid eyes or feet on the MS-3 yet. I'm a bit behind with the Boss stuff but I hope to remedy that shortly. Cheers!
Thanks for a great demo.. Love your tone and playing.. I just got my ES 8 and I am excited to hook everything up.. Towards the end you explain that switch no 8 is setup for tap tempo.. Is the delay we hear still the Clockwork delay and how is it being controlled to change tempo via the tap. I don't see any midi or tap cable going into the Clockwork? I am planning my setup and this will help me immensely..
Awesome Demo!!! If your able to answer me; I have a couple of question regarding the effect loop of the amp and noise suppression. Does the ES-8 have the ability to route pedals thru the efx loop?If you use a nose gate, noise suppressor, or any other kind noise reduction pedal; how are you using the with the ES-8 and if not, how would you recommend using such pedals with the ES-8? Again, Awesome Demo. Thanks David
Thanks for this video! It's not too long and gives a good idea about the possibilities of the system. One question: Are the changes of preset immediate? I just tried the tc electronic g-system for a few days and decided to send it back because it actually takes some time for the effects to kick in when you change preset, which I cannot afford in the band I'm playing. I'm considering buying this, but I'd like to know if I won't have the same problem.
@brent kingman What kind of plugs & patch cables are you running out of the back of the ES-8? I'm instant on soldering my cables but the trade off is it seems that only the solder-less cables have small plugs. I don't need Lava Cable small but your plugs look considerably smaller than my GLS 1/4"s. I have pancake plugs for my pedals but obviously the ES-8 requires straight plugs for the loops section.
+Brett Kingman Yeah, I could really use the help as well. The manual is really vague. If you could go over all the MIDI functions you used in these patches that would be incredibly helpful. I have the Mobius and H9 as well, maybe you could do a walk thru w those too? Sorry to be a pain in the arse; I think most of us are MIDIOTS. :)
+brian patrick Again, sorry to be a pain here, but at 12:00 you went to a patch that wasnt using the Mobius, then you brought it in w manual mode on a phaser preset, but the previous patch that did use the Mobius was a rotary preset. How in the world did you set it up to do that?!? You seem to be the only person in TH-cam land that understands how the ES8 works. Switcher-Shaman. o.O))
+brian patrick Sorry, Brian et al, I haven't forgotten you, but I have been to busy and then ill with the flu over the last two or three weeks to inject anything more into the video realm. The Mobius, like the H9, is MIDI controllable. That means any preset can change any patch in the Mobius.
+Brett Kingman Oh no worries, Brett. You dont owe any of us anything. Take your time. If you can do it, great! If not, its not the end of the world. Your health is more important than any video. Rest up and take care of yourself.
***** Great Demo Man! I am thinking of getting me one of these as well, but there are some things i was not able to figure out yet... Maybe you could take a short look at the MIDI controlling of the es8? Especially in consideration of the MIDI-routing and how to wire that whole thing up and which possibilities you have via MIDI??? And is it possible to extend the es8 via midi (e.g. with the midi4x from GLab)? and how could that all possibly work out? Thanks for your help! kind regards, joe
pedally sounding gain stages... in m using amp preamps in my true bypass switcher for gain (orange,Marshall, boogie, van weelden) i use a germanium treble booster + muffroom fuzz to push the amps
I wonder if a device like this or the EHX Super Switcher could have say, four loops connected and controlled by the first four switch channels, and then the second four channels going via MIDI to a MIDI enabled amp like a Boss Katana MkII so it could select from a few patches...? Is that something doable? If nobody knows, I'll let you know in a few weeks. I have a second Katana 100 MkII head coming to go stereo with my first one, and I'm getting either a Boss ES-8 or EHX Super Switcher to go on my pedal board soon after that, and I will configure it exactly like I said, four loops on the board and hopefully four different patches in the Katana's. We'll see what happens.
Hello Brett. Always loved your demo's. I have a question. If you say have a patch set up with among other things a particular delay type, does the patch remember the delay type? Or does it just remember that you have delay in the patch and then you have to remember the delay type and call it up? Thanks in advance for your time.
@@BrettKingman - Thanks for the reply. I have an RV-500, DD-500 & an EQ-200. I'm hoping that by virtue of having the Boss "Ecosystem" of affects, I'll be able to put them all in one channel of an ES-5 (for Real-Estate) and that the ES-5 will be able to talk to all of them - allowing me to build patches that will reach out to them all. That would leave 4 Channels for OD's and such.
@@BrettKingman - thought I would share a response I got from Boss. I asked them if I could use an ES-5 and use just one of the channels to connect VIA Midi an RV-500, DD-500, MD-200 & EQ-200 & WE CAN! The 200 series use a 3.5 mm TRS connector on one end and a standard 5-pin male MIDI connector on the other. I don't see TRS Cables that don't have a 5-Pin on at least 1 side, so I'm thinking a 2 headed 5 Pin coming out of the ES-5 > DD-500, then a TRS Connector out of the DD-500 > MD-200, then out of the MD-200 with another TRS Connector > RV-500 then out of RV-500 with yet another TRS into the EQ-200 then yet another TRS back to the ES-5. Boss tells me I can map all 4 units and control all of them using only 1 channel....leaving 4 for whatever. Boutique Gear Snobs can laugh all they want, but Boss is on a roll. I'm 54, been a gear nerd since I bought a Tascam 4 Track in the 80's. (you could actually turn that into a 6 track by doing it right), I've got my fair share of "Boutique" stuff, but Boss is stroking double after double off the fence, and if this ES-5 plays out like it appears it will, this is a grand slam. I appreciate your reply & thoroughly enjoy your reviews. Your channel is in a select few that I gravitate to. Pete Thorn, Henning Pauly (He's an acquired taste, but I believe he's a genuinely good guy), Tom Quayle, Mike Hermans (although sometimes he just reminds me of how "not as good as him" I am) and you. There are a few others. I can take Rhett Shull in small doses. He likes to hear himself talk. Anything past 3 minutes and I'm done. Anyway, thanks! This ES-5 is smaller & by utilizing the Boss "ecosystem", an ES-5 is much like an ES-8. I realize the same thing could be done with an ES-8 leaving 7 (how crazy is that?), but I need all the real estate I can get. I also understand I could use non-Boss MIDI capable pedals in the chain, but I'm not going down the Strymon road for that. I understand the way Boss does things in their software, menus...etc. I use a Strymon Zuma with a Ojai expander under my board. Maybe someday I'll go down the Strymon road for something else. Anyway, have a good one.
Interested in getting one of these, but I'm curious about how you are able to run certain pedals through the ES8 and the amp's effects loop at the same time? So basically, I understand that you can just put pedals like an overdrive, distortion, compressor or wah into the ES8 like demonstrated in the video, as they are pedals that you'd typically run through the front of the amp, but how would you put modulation and delay/reverb type pedals through an amp's effects loop whilst making sure that they go through the ES8 so that you can switch them in and out like the others? I'm sure it's an easy solution that i've totally missed, but I really have no clue how I'd wire this thing up that way. Great video btw Brett, you definitely know your stuff! :)
Brett, thanks so much for the ES8 group link, its been a big help. Ive a question, what jacks and cable are you using on that board? Are the straight and 90' jacks from the same brand? Thanks again!
I wonder if it is possible to program two of the mono loops into one stereo loop...? I need a switcher with three stereo loops. Unless I spend $1200 on a Gigrig G3, nothing seems to have more than two stereo loops.
+Juan Alberto Gómez You would go from the ES-8 midi out to the H9 and then from the midi out of the H9 to the Strymon (you could have the Strymon and H9 the other way round). You then assign the two fx units different midi channels to control them with.
@BrettKingman , can you please tell us what type of patch cables you use to go from your pedals to the es8?? They look like they do the job perfectly and it's kind of hard to find the right kind. Thank you! Amazing guitar!
Very impressive, Mr. Kingman. Is there an A/D conversion going on inside the Boss or is it a programmable analog bus? I realize once it goes through the Eventide and such that a digital conversion occurs but I'm just curious if you only selected the Plexi Drive and the Sick As if they stay in the analog domain. Thanks again for your excellent demos.
great video! I was curious cause I'm considering getting one of these. My amp has 5 external channel switching jacks. I noticed this unit has 3 external control jacks but for each jack it says it controls 2. Would something like a single to dual trs cable to be used to control 2 channels from 1 jack? Hope that makes sense..
Brett I also have the ES-8 and am currently building my pedalboard. Would you happen to know if the George L angled cable kits will work? I'm worried since the jacks are close together on the ES-8 that the angled plugs would not give clean room to the next set of jacks. Thanks!
great board i have done similar ...need some help though what was your midi settings to change the strymon patches as i can't get them to work ? ...hope you can help cheers Tony
Thanks for doing this Brett. Really looking forward to giving one of these a try. Does this allow for the Wampler Plexi Deluxe to have the boost switch? Or is that just a separate hit the button yourself?
@BrettKingman Is this still your switcher of choice 8 years later? I'm late to the party but I'm thinking of getting one despite pretty much already deciding on a Gigrig G3.
Dude that's like the mintest sound iv heard in a long time, sounds absolutely gorgeous my friend.
Got one! Big bucks on patch cables, but that’s okay. Now trying to explore this great thing!
That is a very impressive piece of hardware. Also a very impressive job of cabling it all together.
Best video i've seen on this product. SOLD. Thank you, Brett!
Ridiculously easy to use once the ground work is done and so so flexible. It really is the best time to be a guitarist these days. Thank you so much for the demo. Also loved to hear some of the pedals i hadn't heard before
Brett Kingman - The King of style, sound and taste in my opinion!!!!!
I just bought one of these after watching your thorough video (and a few others). Thanks for the demo. Love that Plexi pedal also.
Brett, this is simply a fantastic sounding board! Love your reviews!
Not only a good switcher demo, but also helpful to hear various pedals.
Wow that board sounds great. Great job, and cool vid.
Amazing! and completely beyond my playing ability. Great demo Brett as per usual.
Although it's a bit pricey, that Boss ES-8 is exactly what I need! I'm sold!
Brilliant sounds and awesome demo . Keep on rocking that rad Tele !
The routing makes this a dream come true. I just went for the Fractal FX8 for the sake of routing options. This is making me have second thoughts.
Amazing video! Thanks for showing exactly what I needed to know.
Great production quality BTW
Great video as always. Pretty much made up my mind on getting an ES8. Thanks for posting. Can't wait for the midi demo of the ES8.
An unusual but very musical & playable setup. Thanks Brett!

Great tones! Really nice on the ears.
Great tone brother. Thanks for sharing 🤘😫
Great demo and awesome tone!
Well done….some of those ambient sounds were quite nice!

Good informative video. Seems like it's one of the best programmable switchers around.
and people keep complaining about its price, which actually is a steal for a unit like this

Right, thanks. Still one of the best controllers out there. And IMHO the best Boss product

Dig the Video 😎
Mate, where could we purchase those thin, right angle patch cables you have there? :)
Brett, thanks so much for the ES8 group link, its been a big help. Ive a question, what jacks and cable are you using on that board? Are the straight and 90' jacks from the same brand? Thanks again!
OMG sounds pretty good...
What’s the name of your cable kit? I would think it’s super high quality. Thanks bro!
I wonder if it is possible to program two of the mono loops into one stereo loop...? I need a switcher with three stereo loops. Unless I spend $1200 on a Gigrig G3, nothing seems to have more than two stereo loops.
Noob question here: so from the boss unit you can select the settings of the strymon and the eventide?
+Erwin Heiser Yes. MIDI...
aahh - unknow territory for me I'm afraid, Thanks for answering.
+Erwin Heiser how did you connect the H9 and the Mobious if the Boss only has one midi in? thank you!
+Juan Alberto Gómez You would go from the ES-8 midi out to the H9 and then from the midi out of the H9 to the Strymon (you could have the Strymon and H9 the other way round). You then assign the two fx units different midi channels to control them with.
Super sound! 5+
Are you using your amp's FX Loops for your time/modulation pedals?
Any chances of getting the settings for that auto wah sound. Killerrrr!
Great demo and totally amazing sounds!
Can you please tell what algorithm did you use for the drop D sound on the H9?
Brett, are all the fx in the ES-8 going into the front of the guitar amps? That is nothing in the amp fx loop. Sounds killer!
@BrettKingman , can you please tell us what type of patch cables you use to go from your pedals to the es8?? They look like they do the job perfectly and it's kind of hard to find the right kind. Thank you! Amazing guitar!
Okay I'm sorry. I just realized that you put that you use Providence cables in the description. Sorry for the mess up. Thanks!
Great demo! Can this device send midi cc to a infinity looper or other midi devices?
Very impressive, Mr. Kingman. Is there an A/D conversion going on inside the Boss or is it a programmable analog bus? I realize once it goes through the Eventide and such that a digital conversion occurs but I'm just curious if you only selected the Plexi Drive and the Sick As if they stay in the analog domain.
Thanks again for your excellent demos.
It has an analog relay switching matrix.
+brian patrick Thank you!
+Ja Tin No problem. Ck Bretts comment below, he left a link to a facebook page devoted to the ES8 that has more info than Boss is providing.
Sounds ace. How many organs will i have to sell on the blackmarket to get any where near like the pedals on here and the boss ES8 switching system?
great video!
What cables or jacks are you using? They look very compact. The arrangement of you pedalboard's very tight. Like very much.
@BrettKingman Is this still your switcher of choice 8 years later? I'm late to the party but I'm thinking of getting one despite pretty much already deciding on a Gigrig G3.
Do you share any of your H9 patches on a website at all? That'd be great. I'm looking forward to your next video - I've got two H9s...
