I took a look at your retrospective. You did a great job! I love it! Star Ocean 3 was the first game I played. Well maybe no technically the first but you get what I mean. At first I didn't think much of it when I pass by it at GameStop. But two things caught my attention. RPG and Square Enix. Right there I was like "God damn it! Curse my hunger for wanting adventure!" So I bought it. The first time I played it 4 years ago it was awesome! The story was awesome, the game play was awesome, the characters were awesome, everything was awesome! Star Ocean 3 actually got me into the entire Star Ocean series. The Star Ocean series in my opinion is the greatest series of all time. But I had to nitpick I'd say Maria (SO3), Leon (SO2), and Edge (SO4) are the characters I hate the most. Maria and Leon were always too prideful and Edge just turned into a paranoid whiney bitch. But the rest of the series story and gameplay helps me forget it. Also I did learn the original SO3 got bad reviews do to glitches and dull colors. But then the Director's Cut came out and then positive review pouring in. Over all this was a great retrospective. Keep up the good work. :)
Can't wait to see these Darren, this trailer alone was enough to make me want to play this series. Strange that they chose to release the second one at all.. I guess we were lucky to get that back then. I gotta start hunting for those PSP games it seems!
Love this series, I feel like tri-ACE is one of those brilliant developers that's not gotten the recognition they deserve, SO and VP are fantastic series, and for some strange reason I actually liked SO much more after the big plot twist in SO3, I was hoping that it'd influence SO4, but that game was just so blargh
i love the videos and retrospectives . and i know alot of people dont care for Star Ocean 5 but i kinda like it and id love to see you add it to the Star Ocean Retrospective :)
Looking forward to checking these games out. I recently got Last Hope international on PS3 along with some other JRPGs I never checked out last gen. I really liked Infinite Undiscovery on 360 which seemed to be tri-ace's foot in the door for 'next gen' games at the time. So far Last Hope is heavily reminding me of the mechanics and functionality of Infinite Undiscovery and I've become intrigued to check out the series further. I was a huge Phantasy Star player back in the day, which led me to Final Fantasy, and during the wait for XIII it led me to Infinite Undiscovery which has now led me to the Star Ocean games. it seems I'm gonna have to check out the 'Tales Of' games now too. Funny how things relate sometimes. XD
Awesome video! I've only played The Last Hope, and I loved it!! Just ordered First Departure and Second Evolution, Til The End Of Time will follow soon.
That composers name sounded familiar...took me awhile to realize it's because he also did the music for Dark Souls, pretty much my most favorite game ever! Star Ocean the Second Story is actually another of my favorites. I tried it before any of the Tales games, so I had never seen anything like that at the time. I was used to seeing turn based or strategy RPGs.
Glad you're doing this retrospective. When deciding between 360 and PS3 when FF13 was released, I chose 360 because of Last Hope and Vesparia. Amazing how great if a jrpg machine the 360 seemed then only to be left largely in the cold the last 4 years. If it weren't for Vesp, LH, and Mass Effect, the machine would have been a total waste for me.
my 1st star ocean was end of time. Loved it, but after seeing past and new ones i was kinda disappointed. I haven't even played the new ones but they all looked so similar to one another that i didn't even bother because the characters and the beginning in a jungle was basically the same so i concluded that the lore would be hella the same, but just a bit change so it won't be exactly the same.
Yeah, really glad they annaunced 5 a few days ago. As much as I liked the game, it would not have been a worthy ending for the series... I like everything about the visuals and gameplay, but the story and some of characters were meh compared to the other games. But I already like how the characters that have been annaunced look, so that is a good sign.
Mirelurk Gaming agreed... my personal favorite in the series. and about the voice acting... I have played jrpg's sinds I was young... I am used to it. :p
***** I normally only cover games that have received an English localization in my retrospectives, but I may actually look at Blue Sphere at some point.
You should. It's a great RPG for the Game Boy Color. I know of a group that's working on a translation. Perhaps when it's done, you can revisit it one day.
Um... All right, let me complain: Wolf Team developed only ONE Tales of Game - Tales of Phantasia. And they also developed first two Valis games a Final Zone game. And second coplaint... You used GBA footage for Tales of Phantasia and PSP footage for Star Ocean, despite there being fan-translated SNES versions, which would be MUCH CREDIBLE IN A CONCEPT OF A BLOODY RETROSPECTIVE VIDEO!!! ...Excuse me, but showing remakes instead of original games in retrospective videos is satanism.
I played second story. And I liked star ocean 3. IG I prefer the characters in 3 better than 4. Nel and mirage over lymle and fucking meracle and goddamn Sarah's pointless worthless ass. Goddamn those characters were shitty n pointless. Why do they keep repeating the word friends is corny and lame.
honestly, i am glad they left, if Star Ocean is what i had to look forward to with the Tales series, i would not have invested in the franchise as i have so far. i prefer how the combat is in Tales, and i prefer the story telling, which has only gotten better over the years, though they have not all been great, but they have gotten better.
+keiichimorisato98 Tales seems likes it had more chances to get things right so it has some pretty high quality games, but Star Ocean's been more consistent. But you know, comparing is mostly pointless, might as well enjoy them all! ;)
RodniDemental more consistent? i actually agree, it certainly has a more consistent nose dive since SO3. the only good SO games are the first 2, and even then, only the PSP remakes.
RodniDemental actually, comparing the two isn't pointless, since the two games were created by many of the same people, with many of the same design concepts and story beats. what happened was that the Tales of Phantasia dev team got into a creative dispute over the direction the franchise should go. essentially the Star Ocean games is what the Tales franchise was going to be if they had stayed on the team, and honestly i am glad they left because the gameplay for SO3 and 4 it terrible.
I appreciate you playing through each game so you get the full experience and insuring the quality of your reviews.
2nd story was one of my favorite games on the ps1, spent so many hours playing it.
Very glad you decided to tackle this series in a retrospective. As you said, it is a pretty natural place to go from the Tales retrospective.
I can't wait to hear what you have to say about them :]
Star Ocean Till the End of Time is possibly the reason I love JRPGs so much.
LOL "Which is the final game in the series..." 2 games later as of 2022 lol

I love your channel! Thanks for all the great JRPG content. You really deserve more views.

What a great retrospective episode, great job!
The first two games are in my backlog while I still need to finish 3 and have beaten 4. I look forward to this new series.

Good news, they released additional games in the series & are remaking
Star Ocean 5 was announced!!! And it looks to be fantasy based. I'm so excited!!!!
Still excited?
I'm at the end now, I've been more disappointed then not myself so far but will see what the ending has in store
so 5 became a huge dissapointment,
Tales of Zesteria was not even a bad game. i thought it was good... i enjoyed it. its just not as good as some of the other Tales titles
Rene Esguerra yeah it really does suck. It makes me almost feel motion sickness with the camera.
cant wait for Star Ocean 5 :)

+alterino222 I found I enjoyed Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey quite a bit too as far as 360 RPGs go.
Great job champ.
2nd story the best of all
YES!
Very informative!
I'll have to check out the Super Famicom version .
Radiata stories was also made by triace don't forget that great game
man just watch all of the retrospective will u cover start ocean 5 now that is out
Star Ocean 5 is coming out in a week. Going to go over it?
That's the plan.

Awesome. My fav is SO2. 7 characters in battle at once is going to be quite hectic tho.

I still hope star ocean 4 isn't the last game this is a great series

HushedTerror Yeah, and it'll be like star ocean 3. Which is a really good game (sucky voice acting though) I cannot wait to play it!
Mirelurk Gaming agreed... my personal favorite in the series. and about the voice acting... I have played jrpg's sinds I was young... I am used to it. :p
HushedTerror Apparently Star Ocean 5 is going to take place between Star Ocean 2 and 3.
+♥HappyBunny♥ I think it's after 2, as it takes place on 500- SD
I noticed in this series that you missed Blue Sphere. Will you talk about that one eventually?
***** I normally only cover games that have received an English localization in my retrospectives, but I may actually look at Blue Sphere at some point.

I love 2 AND 4 the best. i have mixed\equal feelings about 1 and 3

The PSP remakes are abominations.

what is the star ocean timeline
4-1-2-3
You can play games in any order really, as each game's story is self contained.
which one receives the best hype
Depends, usually 2 or 3. I personally like 2 the most.
was 4 or 1 not that great or?
I think they are both good games.Usually the fan reception to 4 is very mixed, whereas 1 is a classic with a couple (minor) issues.
honestly, i am glad they left, if Star Ocean is what i had to look forward to with the Tales series, i would not have invested in the franchise as i have so far. i prefer how the combat is in Tales, and i prefer the story telling, which has only gotten better over the years, though they have not all been great, but they have gotten better.
