Alien kills a cat off screen in Alien: Isolation (easter egg)

- Here's another easy-to-miss event in Alien: Isolation. This takes place in Mission 2, near the baggage claim area. A cat is meowing somewhere, probably in an adjacent room/corridor/vent that's off-limits to the player. As you walk toward the stairs, the meowing is abruptly cut off. Shortly after this, you can hear the alien squeal. (This sound is actually randomised; there are at least three variations of it.) The sound emanates from the exact same spot where the cat was. A few seconds after this you can hear the alien move behind the wall, probably in a vent. (This sound is randomised too so it's bit different on each playthrough.)
The cat probably belonged to Hughes, the communications manager who got his head smashed into a wall by a Working Joe in Mission 4. He mentions the cat in one of the computer logs.

(There's another video of the cat meowing but it seemed to miss the alien being there as well.)
For those wondering, that cat has lore, it was from Hughe’s daughter, it’s believed that Hughes family died while he went to Seagson communication to get help, you can find audio logs and in one Hughes warn his wife to secure their daughter and take the cat with them, hide while him went to the communication center, Hughes was killed by a working Joe in front of Ripley eyes.
IIRC after you contact Samuels and flee from the communications room, you get people desperately trying to contact anyone in charge for help. One of them is a woman pleading for help as "my daughter was taken", presumably by the alien.
It makes me wonder if this was Hughes' wife, and his daughter, Claire, was abducted to be a host.
Like many people seen in the aliens' reactor hive, it's likely Claire was probably dead or impregnated by a facehugger in there somewhere, unseen.

The cat's yelp activates when Ripley gets too close to the generator area and the Alien's screech triggers when you get to a certain point in that hallway. Usually, that would happen after the player's turned on the generator, so there would be a decent delay between the cat's yelp and the screech. The two aren't necessarily tied together.

it does sound like the cat was grabbed or something though, so even if specific events trigger this audio, i think the audio was meant for you to think that the alien snatched the cat away, and the alien audio fits anytime anywhere, even with a cracking sound in the walls, so it was just a coincidence which added to the cat audio
i'm pretty sure xenomorphs of all stages canonically ignore things like cats because they're too small to use as chestburster hosts. we've seen xenomorph embryos and there's no way that would comfortably fit in a cat.
you're right. In Alien 1979 directors cut, you can see the alien hit Jonsy before carefully examining it. Very interesting. So in this case the cat probably attacked the xeno drone and the alien simply hit em up haha
It probably doesn't count as canonical (as a cat owner tbh i hope it doesn't), but i believe that during the chestburster stage of the alien campaign in one of the old AVP games you have to eat a cat in order to grow into a xeno
In Alien Earth Invasion is said that Xeno uses Wilde animals as long as demestic ones to breed basic drones and runners.

As someone who has a cat, this isnt a death yelp, that is a running yelp, something frightened the cat and it escaped. So i wouldnt worry much about the little feline, that thing escaped, and is probably the one stalking the alien now.

I played this game on nightmare right from the get go since i am a lunatic and when i got to this part and heard the cat i was literally screaming at my screen " Here kitty , come to me i'll keep you safe . Here k.... " hears the alien killing the cat " i had to take a break for about 3 days because i wanted to punch the monitor ..jesus they knew how to get your blood boiling XDD . If i was in that situation in real life , i would crawl my way to that cat even if i had to break my own arm to fit where the cat was and safe it or die along with it , to me i treasure animals way more that i do humans since they don't back stab you , lie to you ,cheat on you .

Yeah. I saw on on of the missions when the xenomorph was temporarily gone. There was a room full of posing androids. It had a terminal with a dead woman next to it on a chair. It said something like "Suzie, lock the doors and get the cat. Don't worry honey, those androids are just models".

It's quite contradictory to how the Xenomorph is supposed to be. In the original Alien movie, it ignored Jonesy the cat, indicating it only kills creatures it deems as a threat to its own existence, killing a harmless little cat just doesn't seem like the Xenomorph

They should do a DLC mission where Amanda Ripley saves the cat in the final chapters lol. I imagine it would make the game MUCH more intense to carry around a meowing, noise-making animal while trying to hide or reserve flame thrower fuel.

I'm on my fourth playthrough of the game, and never noticed this until I started this particular run. Scared the crap out of me, I thought I was hearing things at first, but then confirmed, nope, this is a very real thing in the game.
I say if Newt could survive something like this, so could a cat.
Also, the cat itself is actually mentioned in game in one of the logs. A father tells his wife to get their daughter and the cat on the way to see him. Hughes maybe? I think the log is in the SysTech Spire, but don't quote me on that.
This game is amazing. I play the entire campaign once every year so that by the next playthrough I forget the minute secrets that make the game a bit easier.
Though there wasn't an Alien in that partmof the game. The atmosphere, lighting, sounds were done so well. My heart was racing and I was scared to death moving along that area. That Alien hiss was terrifying. I love this game so much.
Can't wait to play it in VR one day, though I'm certain I'll die of a heart attack.

You can play worry free until you get the cutscene of the alien coming out of the ceiling vent and just misses Amanda Ripley. The game dose a good job with sound and lighting to try and scare you
@@ryans413 I know. Even thou, it has everything that's scary WITHOUT the Alien. Considering the quality of design; a mode where you can explore the ship sans Alien, is a must. I saw Alien when I was eight, so it's very personal for me. I don't know if I could handle VR, though I'd still buy it. One of my all time favourite games, I hope they bring to PSVR2: is Monstrum. It's the scariest game I know-that I can play in VR without dying (maybe) of a heart attack within the first two minutes. That would be my first pick for first ever VR game, if I could choose. @@ryans413 You can meet the alien much earlier on. You know that cutscene where axel gets pierced from behind(😏), and then you are tasked of calling in the tram? If you press the call button, run all the way to the room where he died, and then run back to the call button, the xenomorph actually comes out from the vent closest to you and kills you(unless you hide behind something, then it merely searches around). I don't know if that was a glitch, i only found out about it because I thought I was invisible but it sure as hell gave me a fright.
The Xeno had little interest in Jones in the film so it's possible that he just ran away rather than being killed, I mean why would you want to think of an animal that you may love just be heard getting killed?

Actually the Alien did try to kill Jonesy.
It looked at him and then figured out that Ripley would come back for it, possible, but regardless, the Xeno left Jonesy in the cage in the film.

In Alien, the xenomorph spared Jones because it knew it wouldn't win in a fair fight.
In this game, the fight actually happens. The xenomorph tried to kill the cat but met its match. You hear it fleeing through the vents while the cat stops meowing to patch itself up.
I dont think the cat was killed by the Alien. It probably died horribly when Sevastapol crashed and burned! :'(

happened to me while playing Alien: Isolation, my cat was chilling on top of my speakers next to my screen, and she scurried away when the damn Xenomorph dropped down from a ceiling vent... I scared shitless twice, once because of the Xeno, second because of my cat.
this gave me chills when i played this the first time. playing with headphones is highly recommended. my second playthrough i did without but i have a decent sound system. the bassy boom boom of the ship made it hard to hear things sometimes. sound design in this game is a strict 10/10

To be fair, I don’t think the Xeno killed the cat, so much as scared it away.
The Xenomorphs generally don’t bother attacking creatures too small to be a threat/host, like the cat in the first film.
Likewise, there’s plenty of food to eat on station, so I don’t think it would specifically hunt such a small meal.

All of you were wrong. Cats are behind the entire infestation. In the original movie, Jonesie watched on with indifference as the Alien slaughtered the crew of the Nostromo. This cat was simply commanding the Xenomorph to kill Amanda Ripley.
I have never actually heard that and I’ve played dozens of times and watched so many play throughs. I’ve always heard it banging around but never that cat. That’s pretty interesting. Oh wait one of the npcs tells Maria to pick up the cat in a recording I believe. Maybe?

Does anybody else think that these graphics, even though they're from 2014, would still be considered nearly top notch even in 2022 and would make for an amazing Aliens game today? After the fiasco that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, I want an Aliens game like Aliens Isolation, but more like A:CM in terms of plot, weapons, etc.

I don’t think anybody with two brain cells legitimately values the life of an animal over that of a human, but it’s pretty sad. That cat didn’t do anything wrong, it was just living it’s life. Just being a cat-and presumably a very agreeable one, given that it was allowed aboard a space colony. Most people are quite attached to their pets. I love my real-life cat. His name is Lucky and he’s great. It would be sad if he were suddenly killed for no reason. And we don’t really have any reason to care about 90% of the survivors on the ship. Most of them just want to kill you despite you having done nothing to present yourself as a threat.
It would be so much better if we heard hissing, and whatnot.

In the very first Alien movie, Ripley and the cat are the only ones NOT killed by the Alien.
The Alien is alone with Jones at least twice (right before Brett is killed and right before the Nostromo explodes), and neither time does the Alien kill it.
Aliens will not and/or cannot harm cats confirmed.

why would it kill a cat. Xenomorphs are smart creatures and will only attack when threatened, the xenos would know cats arent harmless after examining them. Which also explains why they're so agressive. In alien: coventant, David explains that if you don't threaten them, they will leave you alone.

@@bigmeme8464 Cats are too small for that, the xenomorph in Alien didn't kill Jones either out of disinterest due to being too small to be considered food or too small for a potential host or perhaps the Alien did know that Ripley would come back for it and by leaving it alive it gave it the opportunity to stowaway in the escape shuttle that Ripley was going to use.
I believe that Xenomorphs have no interests in small animals such as cats due to being too small to act as a host, but a chestburster might make a meal out of a cat, but that's pretty much the only stage of the xenomorph that actually has a valid interest, every other would be curious towards them but outside of that, no.

This sound that you hear is the cat running away and the Xeno giving a snarl. Then, the Xeno enters the vent to attack Ripley later.
Wouldnt say scared of them as in alien 1 it just bats the cat in the box asides carelessly but id say more that they sont really see them as good for hosts or prey in general
