This week on TestDrive James hits the road in the 2025 BMW Z4 M40i, a performance roadster we featured way back in 2020. While there aren't many changes for this vehicle, BMW has listened to enthusiasts and added the 6MT as an option for this model year. James goes over the exterior design and features of this vehicle along with the tech specs and pricing.
He then jumps inside to discuss the 2 seat interior, and some of the reasons why you might want to consider this car. Hot off his week with the 2025 BMW M440i xDrive, this Z4 has the same powerplant but offers a unique driving experience over the 4 Series.
James then hits the road on his Test Drive to discuss his overall impressions after spending a week with this car, and why he'd buy one if he were in the market for a 2 seater roadster.

I've had mine a few months. Top down and stomping on the gas makes a glorious sound that's always good. The low pitch roar from the exhaust with the whine up front from the turbo. It's music.

Had a couple of Boxster S's, got tired of the dealerships (stealerships). Thinking about this, I'm in more of a "GT" phase of life. Any thoughts?

I've had the auto version for 2 years. It's always an absolute joy to drive. It doesn't fade 🙂 I use mine all year round in the UK except from in the snow. Though I know a few scandinavians fit studded tyres and drive it in full Winter conditions. It's a car that needs to be driven, not parked in a garage. I'm a few years from retirement but have grown up kids, so why not, and we have other cars if we need more seats. Love mine. However when I actually retire I'm working out if I can actually get in to an Ariel Nomad 🙂

I love this car. Nice video. But there is no stop and go cruise control in combination with a stickshift.

Some manuals do have the option for adaptive cruise control, just requires you to shift the vehicle down in gear if required.

Depends on what you ultimately want out of a vehicle. The Mustang is like a hammer, whereas the Z4 is a scalpel. Different tools for different jobs.
