    It should be noted that fortifications aren't 100% safe. Clowns can still throw pies and send their various clown particles through. Which could be a bit too much fun for many players. also in some rare instances if things get silly enough a clown can theoretically be shot through fortifications. if you have a tile to spare I recommend building windows behind the fortifications for a safer circus experience.

      @SinkingLotus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not just shoot through either. I had a goblin siege about an hour ago. A few of them dodged a stone fall trap and climbed through the fortification. I later had to dig some of those fortifications out so I could remove the corpses.
      Though I believe I recall reading that they can't do anything from below. I could be wrong.
      As for the fortification and glass combo, you probably know this already, but for anyone who reads this and doesn't know. It's a good way to protect your hunting dog scouts. Fortifications can be shot through as mentioned. Windows can be destroyed by building destroyers. (Fortifications can't).
      Fortification goes outside. Window goes inside. Just make sure you remember the order

      @@SinkingLotus I didn’t think stuff as large as a goblin could dodge through fortifications!
      The fortifications wouldn’t have been on a z level above the trap, like on a constructed floor, a setup that kinda looks like this (not top down, but viewed from side on, so fort/floor is +1 z level above gobbo.)
      __[+]
      Gobbo 🪨 gobbo
      Because unless im misremembering (which could very well be) I think having an overhang with a fortification attached to the edge still lets stuff move a diagonally upwards, so between the floor and the fortification, so in this example
      __ [+]
      ↖️(gobbo actually moved diagonally through here, and not through the fortification.)

      Yup this is very true. Using the fortifications is only good for delaying them. I like to have my path to my tunnel down to hell protected by multiple bridges with a lever so I can recall my dwarves then lock it off while I prepare to take them on fully

    • @magicwordstv9027

      I was watching FurtherReading do this on stream and rather than fortifying everything he does the corners only, this prevents any pies or whatever the term is for fire jets.
      He couples it with glass flooring to spot the gaps and also tries to fortify spots out of line of sight of the entrance to that layer where possible so miners won't get scared when pathing by.
      It's a much safer and more well thought out approach than what Blind suggests here.
      To be bluntly honest, they more I see of other creators the more I realise that Blind is a bit of a clown himself.

    im glad you made this, i recorded my own video for this because i hadnt heard anyone touch on it. i used the same method but for getting access to all the goodies in the volcanic pillar, but during recording i carved a fortification into a wall that contained a clown submerged in water (dunk tank) the 5/7 water level in the fortification allowed the clown into my fortress and ruined the video.

      my goal for the next time I get down to the HFS I want to try and preemptively setup a minecart meat grinder hallway with platinum minecarts in it to (hopefully) grind all the weaker clowns into dust, and soften up the bigger ones enough that a moderately well trained army can handle them. we'll see how that goes, though.

      I have two minecart shotguns with metal bronze balls prepared to shoot the corridor, where clowns will go. You can also use those fortifications to channel unwanted fluids down into the bottomless pits. So if you have a particular annoying heavy aquifer you can create a pathway to the adamantine spire to drain all that unwanted water. The same hold true for the magma sea. Just bear in mind that your frame rate is gonna hate you for that.

      Im not sure if a cave in would punch through. I've yet to try it. You can do a simple controlled cave in by building on the above Z level. A grate with a single ground attachment point, then build another floor with only the grate as a support. The floor will fall down and punch several holes through the ground.

    • @SinkingLotus
      @SinkingLotus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There won't be semi molten rock everywhere. Same with magma flow. You could try to dig out the whole layer and see where you can and can't dig. Then Channel out a tile ever so often just one layer

      @@BlindiRL I doubt I'm the first one to think that people talking about hordes of violent clowns is unfair to those with the relevant phobia.
      It feels like an anachronistic hazing ritual trying to trick people into recklessly unleashing Fun* on their fort...after they've presumably done the same through the prior cavern layers without being attacked by anything serious? I can't imagine what's being "spoiled."
      *I DO like "Fun," but that's because it's sort of an ironic half-truth. "Fun" is what makes the game interesting, after all.
      Ultimately, DF is a highly replayable game and the vast majority of fortresses will be run by people who know all about the "hidden Fun stuff" and enjoy the game all the more for it. Maybe "the Circus" only survived as a tradition because it's funny out of context and people enjoy the joke too much to question it.

      As far as I understand it, "circus", "clowns", "ringmasters", etc, are already very well-established, less-spoilery euphemisms, used in the DF community to refer to the Hidden Fun Stuff you'll encounter when you dig too deep.
      I'm not sure whether a video that's suggesting "Ideas" for "Digging into the Underworld Safely", should necessarily be considered a "tutorial" - at least in the most common sense of a "tutorial video" for Dwarf Fortress. This video certainly isn't meant to be necessarily provide instructions/introductions to brand new Dwarf Fortress players.

      @@TheMANARUS It always confused me too. "If you dig too deep and collect too much _candy_ , you might find the _circus_ full of _clowns_ that will _throw pies_ at you and be really _!fun!_ ". Like, it's just the most rudimentary mad libs replacement of the words. Surely no one actually believes that's still effective and everyone just does it for tradition's sake? It would be better to just not talk about the subject at all, or stay vague, than to thinly obfuscate the words in a plain sentence that could have just had all the real words. Like it worked for sure back in 2006, back in 40d and all those old versions of the game, but with so many people playing now, and consuming video content on the game...

      @@TheMANARUS Completely agree with that, to be honest (new player since December, but I'd been hearing about Dwarf Fortress for many years).
      I was originally going to say something in my comment about DF HFS being "one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming", but my comment seemed to get a bit too long.
      I guess in the end, it's just that people like the novelty of people potentially still discovering the circus on their own, purely as a consequence of their own greed/hubris/skill.
      On the other hand, as it is such a badly-kept secret anyway (and as the "hidden fun" language is such obvious false advertisement), you could just as easily say that all of this serves to ENSURE there's always going to be a steady trickle of new visitors to the circus (frustrated by all the ambiguity, and fixated on getting a proper look for themselves).
      And until they do get that look, they're NEVER going to guess it really IS just clowns all the way down.
