Art Journal Ideas: Watercolor and Acrylic Techniques

- In this video, I take you through the process of creating a dynamic 2-page layout in my handmade Artisanal Journal. Using a combination of watercolor on watercolor paper and acrylic paint on a canvas page, I explore the interplay of shades of pink and orange. To add a touch of drama and depth, I incorporate striking black stencil work using a stencil from the Stencilgirl Stencil Club. Join me as I demonstrate how to blend these different mediums and techniques to create a cohesive and vibrant art journal spread.

One thing a surface design instructor told her classes was, “if you don’t like what you’ve done, do two more things to it before starting over. If you feel like you’ve already ruined it, what do you have to lose”? She was right. I love what you said about giving a piece time before you throw it out.
Also, a whole journal with this latest palette? What a concept! I love it. I’m taking your journal class now and will have to try that. The sherbet colors are lovely!

It cracks me up the way you hold your watercolor brush. It is clearly a quality brush because on the last video you pushed it against the fibers several times and it is holding up well! 😂 Mixed media artists need to be able to be free!
Haha! I know how to hold them correctly… I just choose not to… and these brushes definitely take a beating and they have held up fantastic! 😁

Love your work, Denise! It’s inspired me to create art in a much more fun and expressive way. I agree with your comments about gessoing over paintings you really don’t like. I had a 3x4 canvas one time that I must have gessoed 4-5 times and repainted. Some of the paintings I didn’t like; others I liked but got tired of. I finally got a painting I really liked but that canvas ended up weighing so much from all the gesso and paint, it was hard to hang without wall anchors!

Beautiful sherbet colors and I’m a fan of large white borders. I love watching how you work your brushes; I’m too gentle. I really like where you’re going with this journal. I used some ink that I had put it into a small squeeze bottle with a needle nose top. I was smart enough not to squeeze it but it came out pretty fast anyway. It seeped into the middle and showed up elsewhere in the journal (just in the middle). I had it on my desk, my floor, myself…what a mess. Since it’s my first journal and I’m playing, I’m not stressing about it. As you said, “lesson learned.” I guess I could always go back with some white gesso to clean up the other pages. I love bright colors under black or over black. I want to do a journal but always feel like Im hiding my art away when I want it out on display. I love this project. The black flowers on top almost look like black velvet. Have a good evening.😊
I think putting it in a bin in my closet is hiding it… and the books could be out on display all the time! I make too much art to be able to hang it all 😁

Soooo much fun watching you and motivational in making work harder on my recovery. I need to have patient to just work towards my goal of painting in my DW journals. Xg lg, 2 blue, 6 x 6 and a new black one. I told OT today I need to get home and paint in my journals. You truly make me motivated. And I love a journal with different substrates to do art on. This is my year to get back to painting. Love these color combos. Are those ceramic dishes from Masha? I had a huge watercolor order arrive yesterday. Hope to use those here in recovery. I think I found those Dina Wakely Journals on Joggles. I ordered 2 of them. They haven't arrived yet, probably another week or so, as I am in Australia. Hopefully they are the correct one's.
Those are the Kraft paper ones they made this year. I like the variety of papers of the last ones. They will still be fun! 😊
