@@paulaa5866 I'm so confused as to why you think that is awful? he has constantly shown himself to be a realist. if you think this is awful, perhaps you need to read translations of his lyrics and understand the messages he puts out. Nothing wrong with saying life is hard - it absolutely is. But finding the strength to get through it and finding beauty in it is pretty much the entire thesis statement of BTS?
@@caricanread just based on the emojis u can already tell whats the problem.. that sentiment falls into that old narrative that yoongi is cold and emotionless. u said hes a realist, but isnt being a realist means having _absolute unbiased perception_ of the world? of life?? yes that "life is hard" had been part of his music but lets not act that thats the entirety of it. dont put him and his music inside a box. he also never insisted a definite solution to solve these "issues".. theres none. hes just simply telling us a story, sharing us his journey. u see listening to them talk, reading their interviews is just as important as analyzing their music.. i suggest u start at their recent cover w voguexgq.. just hope we stop projecting these things not only to yoongi but all the members

I said that his reading taste contains the theme mentioned above. You’re the only one here trying to make these few books define his entire personality. I’m sorry that you’re confused or not understanding but I hope that you dont seriously believe someone’s review of books is somehow endangering or offending a grown man who absolutely will never see this nor care 🤷♀️ you’re upset about an emoji - perhaps you should step back from the internet for a sec and assess.
@@hunghangaroo yoongi has pure emotions ,, that's why people think he is cold and emotionless because that's what you gonna get at first and for people like yoongi and he said it himself his personal space is very important to him ,, if he finds you genuine that you want to know him he will show those emotions ,, and i can totally agree with her because that's what have yoongi been saying and projecting 'life sucks, it's hard, but that doesn't mean i'll stop'
@@hunghangaroo no body said he has looked or insisted there was a solution to these issues... only that he has a very "get through it" vibe which is true,, we're all just trying to get through life like no one thinks it's sunshine and rainbows all the time and sometimes it can get kinda shitty and yoongi is and has never been one to stray away from that.. he's very realistic that life can feel very "blah" sometimes like his line in rain really shows that and hansool... perhaps you need to question why you think calling him a realist is feeding into stereotypes because it is not... also the emoji just look like yoongi he has a very :] face and it's the cutest thing ever... so maybe stop trying to force others words into that narrative... no body thinks he is cold or emotionless anymore,, we all know yoongi is very just a deep thinker and perhaps the most emotional..
Yoongi hasn't said if he sufferd the death of someone close to him, but he did said a few times that he has depression and social phobia (which got better). It's interesting how what they read, what they talk about on their videos/lives and their songs' lyrics are all tied together. Namjoon wonders about life and his real self meanwhile Yoongi gives a "I go/went through this but there is hope for you and me" message

@@caro-lel The Last, an interview for his first mixtape anddd somewhere else I forgot 😅 He didn't say "clinical depression" but did say "depression" in a korean word that doesn't just mean "being sad" (info I got from a few Twitter translators)
Edit: sorry! I just googled and the clinical part means it's a severe depression. I'll change it on the og comment. My wrong, I just meant to say: actual depression, not the mis-use of the word

Suga once said that he got a prize in his middle school for reading the most number of books from his library.

Okay. The NJ "isn't life a curious wonder?" And YG "life sucks, how do we get through it" intro made me very happy. It was a combination of exactly these two sentiments in the thread of their music that made me an Army in the first place so just...😂👍🙏💜

I also picked up Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto this year and absolutely it is one of my top reads for this year as well. Yoongi has that kinda “sad girl” reads mood and that’s all I’ve ever felt and read too. Big mood. Big yes. Big thanks to you for making this - my year is overjoyed you included him and Namjoon, our best smartest BTS bois.

I read almond and it was SO good, it was so cool the way the author showed how the main character experiences the world!! the *tragedy* scene had me gasping and I had to stop reading for like 2 days just to process it
it was all so sudden i felt like i had misread what happened!!
I looove the way that book it's written, it took me out of my lector block :))
This is how I was when I read the end of the first part in The Stranger by Albert Camus. When I got to the scene, I gasped and threw the book at a wall, picked it off the floor the next day and took it back to the library. Then rechecked it out and finished it a few days later.
I’m so happy! And now that that each member of BTS has their own instagrams im hoping they post more book recs on there too 😌😌

namjoon is constantly trying to discover new ideas on the world (which is why he is an avid reader on topics like philosophy and existentialism).
a lot of yoongi's books are self-help and related to grief which makes me think he reads to feel better within himself and deal with life
I actually hated midnight library. too repetitive and felt like a cheesy movie at times. Tae enjoyed it though.
Same I really disliked it. I think that's why some of the members were only seen reading it since neither Yoongi or Rm actually recommended the midnight library book.

The Vegetarian is one of my favorite books!! It's such a beautiful and visceral representation of the trauma of being subjected to the patriarchy. It is written in such an interesting and compelling voice. It feels simultaneously subtle and obvious in the way it exposes misogyny and all the things that come along with that for women in modern society. I would highly recommend this book to anyone! (but be prepared to hate at least the first two narrators and TW: Eating disorder and suicidal ideations)
And a note, Cari you mention she might be a mother as well as a wife, but it's in part the pressure of her (very terrible) husband wanting to start having kids that seems to push her over the edge. It reminds me of Kim Jiyoung Born 1982 in this way, in that the pressure of surrendering your body/profession/etc.. to the expectations of society is what pushes these women over the edge.

I feel like Yoongi's taste in books is more emotion-centric, especially different layers of grief and sorrow and sadness. It's more of a way to understand different perspectives and how each and every person is overcoming their suffering in their own way. It's also interesting bcs he's someone who has experienced alot of ugly things in life and is aiming to use that for the better of the world (thru his music and his aspiration to become a certified psychologist in the future) so i feel like he doesn't view the world as "oh, life is so shitty" but more like "life is unfortunate sometimes, but let's try to look for ways to tackle it better and embrace what we can't."

I've always thought "i always wanna die (sometimes)" was a song i could picture yoongi enjoying and hearing you relate the song to his book choice took me by surprise!!
Yoongi has been open about his mental health struggles so I feel like it can be seen on his book list too i myself struggling with mental health and I know some ppl dislike self help books but some books are just so comforting for me, I love both Namjoon’s and yoongi’s book recommendations and feel like those books really reflect on their music how they write what they write about like namjoon’s songs often tend to be about what is life who is really him what is love concept of daily things questioning things and metaphorically connecting it to other things that makes you realize many things and it’s just so genius and
For yoongi his songs are more about being straightforward about life sharing his pain sharing what he went through and how to deal with it understanding other people’s pain around him and trying to comfort them trying to let them feel heard with his music which means alot to me his songs made me cry a lots of times not because it’s sad but because it feels like he gets it and I’m not alone in this which is really comforting. them mixing their styles in same songs really just makes it masterpiece
i feel like namjoon and suga are two sides of me. i relate to both of them. i feel understood when they talk about their own experiences.
I think that he read THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY. It was in the bookshelves in the house in IN THE SOOP 2 and both he and Namjoon read it and Taehyung listened to the audiobook, I think.

I read When Breath Becomes Air after your last video Cari and seeing you mention it again here in this video has all the emotions flooding back to me. Paul had devoted so much of himself to his practice and patients, even while he was sick, that his memoir is just so beautiful in illuminating how even facing our deaths we can still find meaning in our own lives. He was such a beautiful writer, I remember sobbing (in a cafe surrounded by lots of confused people) during the last chapters when he began to describe how difficult it was to write and his reflections/takeaways on life. Like you, I wasn't super into memoirs beforehand but now cannot HIGHLY recommend this memoir enough. Everyone I talk to about books I mention this and emphasize your recommendation 110%!!!!
When breath becomes air is a book that I will never forget. I tend to read a lot of books similar to this, so wanted to make some reccomendations:
Dear Life by Rachel Clarke - Dr Clarke works in a hospice, and this book talks so beautifully about death, and seriously changed my mindset as a healthcare worker.
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande - similarly, a fantastic perspective on medicine and the end of life. This book is the one that got me into reading medical memoirs.
I re-read The Alchemist almost every year, and get a different message from it each time as I grow and change through the years. 🤓📚

OH I FEEL SO GOOD SEEING THIS. I hated the last part of the book & the fact it was super hyped in Soop 2.
@@summersnow30 it was little underwhelming but the message of the book is simple and straightforward and can be easily understood by variety of people and that's probably why they chose to promote it.

@@emilija5482 Totally agree - says the girl that spends a loot of her money buying the books Namjoon recommends. I like how they try to help the younger people get into reading and read books with a good message - that I understand & love. However, I had the exact same issues as Cari with the book.

Ugh I just love book recommendation videos! Your description of "Almond" gave me some "psychology novel" kinda vibes so I'm definitely adding that to my list. In fact a lot of them fitted in that category....so even more books to read📚. I think because I major in psychology I'm instantly drawn to anything that discusses mental health and intrigued by how those topics are approached. Also it's really interesting to see that Namjoon seems to lean more towards philosophical/existential books whereas Yoongi to psychological.

I have read this september and this was a book that honestly changed the angle of my perspective in life. The way main character is trying to reach his dream and sometimes being down, wanting to give up and finding the willpower in himself. My recommendation is to read it with rested mind because reading and commentate in your mind more detailed brings more flavour to the book. Also highlight or underline some sentences bc after sometime you would like to reread those lines. You know there are types of books that if you keep it around you, you will still have an urge to read again those few sentences again ?? Yes alchemist is exactly like that to me :)))
i'm one of those people who read almond and cried! i loved it and talked about it in one of my recent reading vlogs. i also read lizard** a few months ago - i was able to snag a copy off of amazon. it covers similar themes like the other books you mentioned: loss, grief, and hope! i hope you manage to get your hands on it soon :)

I think the Yoongi recommendations you made based on Namjoon’s books kind of highlight how their personalities balance each other out. Yoongi a practical Pisces and Namjoon a lost in thought Virgo. I’m moving Never Let Me Go up on my tbr.
I've been waiting for the video for so long!! I've read a few of the titles, and I agree with what you said in the beginning comparing Namjoon's and Yoongi's reading styles because I noticed that as well.
ALSO OMG I AGREE!!! I hated that The Midnight Library was pushed so much in the audience's face in In the Soop S2 (I think almost every member read it either as the physical book, e-book, or audiobook). I really disliked the book and how it portrayed what could have been a cool premise. I had a lot of issues with it (that I will start ranting about if I go on, so I'm just going to stop here). It was very obvious product placement (especially when compared to the subtle way of promoting Almond from S1), especially how all the other books were blurred out.

@@caricanread Yuppp - I also thought that having a depiction of mental illness (and treatment) would be nice, but I didn't like how he kept equating medication to bad and how the ending turns out with her being "fixed" - I liked Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (which came to mind since I just read it lol) better in that regards since it showed therapy in a positive light and how she was still working on healing herself even after the climax of the novel.
First of all, bts and books are my two favorite things, cherry top, you talking about them together (Yoongi being my ultimate is a even more of a bonus). So, thank you for making such good and entertaining content. I always watch your videos (although not always comment it). I'm brazilian, so, hearing you talk about The Alquimist, by Paulo Coelho, one of our own writers is nice (of course I knew it was a classic around the world, but I didn't know it had this much hype in Korea, so.. wow. The way you described the books that you recommended was stunning. I've read all of them and I really really liked the way you chose to describe them. I would love more recommendations from you for similar books (though like you said, these are heavy books).
As for The Midnight Library, the moment you started your "disclaimer" (a lot of people like it but i don't but people have different reactions to books etc etc LOL) I just knew you were going to talk about this book because omg so many people seem to like it. I actually totally agree with you about this book.
About who read this book in BTS, it's actually odd and interesting. There's a close up of this book on the bookshelves when they show a "house tour" in the first episode of the show. Then Namjoon and Taehyung both read/listen to the audiobook. All the other books RM read are blurred out. Then j-hope and Jin listen to the audiobook. And finally Jimin is shown picking the book up. Only Suga and Jungkook don't pick it up. I found it odd that 5 out of the 7 of them seemed to attempt to read it, it felt like a subtle kind of product placement, but hey, I might be totally wrong because I do tend to notice books too much (and also because I hadn't enjoyed this particular book much, haha!).
Namjoon and Suga should both read Alain de Botton's "The Consolations of Philosophy." I remember seeing Banana Yoshimoto's books from Borders back in the day... twenty years ago. I've read "Lizard" and remember liking it but can't recall specifics of the short stories in it. This video is one of my faves on your booktube channel. I love the way you discuss the books and incorporate your own preferences where applicable. That reference to young American men citing Jack Kerouac and JD Salinger books as favorites. Throw in some Ray Bradbury in there for the sci-fi fans.

It's funny when I see "The alchemist" as a classic, here in Brazil Paulo Coelho is actually considered a "bad author". I hate this kind of classification, but I've even seen him being mentioned as our "biggest worst writer" once

I read it somewhere that Namjoon analysis the world to understand himself. While Yoongi analysis himself to understand the world. And till today it still stays with me.. i just love how both have their own way of understanding and converting it into lyrics, music is a whole great thing!

I read The Midnight Library before I saw that BTS read it on In the Soop and I did agree that it simplifies depression! I liked the concept of the library/seeing your different lives, but yeah the ending left me kind of ehh. And I love that you mentioned The Vegetarian, I read that years ago and still need to read Human Acts :P

I just bought all of the books above except for one (life lessons) and (out of 10 books because one was a song) I've read 6 out of 10. I'm currently reading "Never let me go" and will follow "vegetarian" next. Not sure when I'll read "courage to be disliked". it's crazy how i read kitchen around 9 years ago and i really didn't like it at the time, especially bc it was after reading goodbye tsugumi by banana yoshimoto too and it's one of my favorite books. but hearing you talk about it, i realized that i might need to read it again now being older and being through other things.
i love how books can be a totally different experience depending on the time of your life.

@@tan4350 I think you’re going in too deep. She never said he’s a ‘depressed angry 2d” person and technically yoongi also made it obvious that he’s a realist. She’s making book recommendations related to the books he was seen actually reading. So really you’re the one twisting her words making it sound like she claimed to know him inside and out which none of us do. You can say that being a realist is one of his different quirks. It’s also quite nice and inspiring to see how deeply connected he is to his emotions and feelings about life. So there was no need to take it that far she made an observation and interpreted it in her way.

I've read The Midnight Library and even though it's not an all-time fav it was a very interesting book
I liked the message the book was trying to give but it could have been better executed.
Loved this video and the recommendations! 💛 Another similar one with that deals with grief and mental health is The Shock of the Fall, by Nathan Filer. It's also written in the main character's pov and has a lot of stylistic choices made by him "typing" and changing fonts or drawing that I found really unique.

Regarding the midnight library, Matt Haig does do non fiction and articles and is like you said, very open about mental health. While I enjoyed the book, after the fact I felt the same as you in a way, the story is ultimately very shallow and one dimensional, but sometimes that's kinda the message you need. I know I did 💕
oo I am a huuuuge Banana Yoshimoto fan (the second story in kitchen is also just so good!!! i love her blurring lines between life and death and stuff like that) and yeah, the midnight library... honestly as someone who's been on antidepressants for 5+ years and has the chronic one most probably, I've been kind of searching for books and stuff on depression and having actual "representation" I guess in books or just reading more experiences, so it was nice to have this book where it's very open, and yeah, but there isssss a ton of stuff where I'm like hm, you know, she sort of "recovers" by the end and gets a "second chance" and a "semi boyfriend" and blabla, while a lot of people with depression don't necessarily "fully" recover and people who do the deed actually often just, you know, die from depression that way, and it's so sad, because treatment definitely works and a lot of people just don't get what they need...
So but yeah, I do think the "good ending" is an extremely important message even if it's SUPER simplified in the book, because that is the mentality that you need to get through this illness, that it comes in waves, that you have to hold on, it's a ton of work to work on it, but most importantly survive and there's so many ways to continue to treat it. A lot of people who die don't see a way to live anymore, and a sort of perspective for possibilities is the most important thing to have so you can continue, because it is definitely treatable, it's just definitely hard and you need to have the sources.. And also, one big thing in therapy and trauma recovery is that you have to come back to the present, basically to be active, work, see people, etc and really come back to a more simple way of just being and living, so this focus on life and "living life" is actually also something quite healthy in concept. I always thought "really? am I not just sticking my head in the sand that way?", but the concept of mindfulness and being active with your body is actually very important also to trauma therapy in the vein of Bessel van der Kolk, and learning how to deal with triggers.
Anyway SORRY SUCH A LONG MESSAGE! I've seen Matt Haig tweet that he specifically wrote about someone with "situational depression", which means its logical that she would recover if her circumstances became better but eh, whatever. My main problem with him is that he's extremely cheesy and not very original haha. Also, there are many many different types of depression and everyone basically has their own personal very specific depression, so it's difficult to have one story represent "all depressed people" but..
Oh and if anyone needs a bit of a positive pick me up who is dealing with it and doesn't think it's gonna get better, I'm currently suddenly having my best half year in well, almost a decade?!! I'm just like, astonished that I can go outside and walk in the sun and think "huh, I'm HAPPY???". Awesome therapist for over 5 years (takes some years to get the right help so don't give up and try to get support if you can), medication that works, it's POSSIBLE OK. I'm like, pretty behind in other life experiences and career and have to fix a lot of stuff that I neglected like other health issues, but have definitely survived and am just having a pretty good time now with doing some writing, working, seeing a handful of friends and family, generally just having the slice of life vibes...
Oh and, ooooo everyone must read The White Book by Han Kang, it's one of the most BEAUTIFUL books I've ever ever read. It's amazing. I have yet to read Human Acts though, I'm on that sooooon!

But I read the book again recently and it's maybe more impactful - so many layered themes! A perfectly introspective novel for the start of a winter season.
