I’ve always been a little confused about what happened with the Olympic that night but I am pretty sure carpathia told Olympic to keep on her original course.

    if they hadn't tried to turn at the last second and just hit it straight on, people would have been injured and probably some killed because of the impact, but it wouldn't have sunk. the damage might have been bad enough that they decided to scuttle it, but the vast majority of the passengers would have survived.

    • @meme9492
      @meme9492 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually...there is a school of thought that suggests that a head on collision would have been even more catastrophic. Remember, that most of the damage was buckled rivets and slightly jarred hull plates. The energy transferred to the hull in the "glancing, sliding blow" was a fraction of the total energy that could have been involved due to the angle of the impact. Basically, what's called an "inelastic collision". Now imagine if the Titanic takes the full brunt of the impact energy from a nose on impact with the iceberg. This would change the dynamics to an "elastic collision" where all of the energy is preserved and transferred through the system. The high frequency energy would ripple throughout the entire ship.
      Remember that the water was about 34 degrees and the steel used in the hull was inferior grade with occlusions, making it almost substandard, even by standards of the day. The hull was riveted instead of welded. In the actual damage, the wide belief is that the rivets failed under the sideswiping impact. Imagine how many more would have failed with the full impact energy transferred to the ship (Titanic was about 66000 tons fully loaded and the iceberg thought to be in the millions of tons. The ship would have fared poorly compared to the iceberg).
      One engineer type thorizes that the ships break up after the 3rd funnel may have been partially attributable to the torquing motion of grounding the bow on the under water part of the berg at speed. Since the area where it cracked is the weakest part of the hull (the gigantic engine room), the guy hteorizes that rivets near the top i=of the hull may have popped there weakening the hull at that point. I can't dispute it out of hand; it makes a certain sense.
      Many who hold to this theory about the incredible damage of a head on impact suggest that Titanic would have foundered far more quickly that she did, owing to the basic destruction of most of the rivets holding the hull together in the icy water and substandard steel. I've heard estimates as fast as 30 minutes.

    • @maurizioentietti2996
      @maurizioentietti2996 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ship sank on April 14 1912 1500 died and 703 lived

    • @tinypoolmodelshipyard
      @tinypoolmodelshipyard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Army Engineer twentyoneA i use to subscribe to the theory until i researched other ships like the SS Arizona that rammed a iceberg. The ship wouldnt have buckled her forst bulkhead was reinforced as to allow for head on contact. Remember the first 4 compartments could flood and hand driven rivets where only used around the bow curve. Even if those rivets buckled the ship could have stay afloat. The buckles between the bow and stern curve where put in with a rivet machine and where stronger than the rivets in the bow.
      However we cannot hold Murdoch responsible as ramming the brand new ship into a berg (especially when he thought he had enough time to turn). it would have cost him his reputation and job. But more people would have survived, but in the moment, I completely understand why Murdoch didn't ram the berg.

    • @tinypoolmodelshipyard
      @tinypoolmodelshipyard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Army Engineer twentyoneA also the break up was because she was almost 900 feet long with stress joints for big waves. She broke at the aft stress joint. The collision had nothing to do with the break up and ive never heard that in my 25 years of research for the ship. The ship sink by the stern she would break behind the 1st funnel and by the bow, by the 3rd funnel. There other support inside the ship besides just the steel hull skin. If Brittanic sunk in deeper water she would have broke but bow slammed the sea floor before her angle reached enough to give out. If the Titanic was damaged her stern wouldnt have come out of the water, it would have broke as the bow sank. Instead the Titanic reached atleast a 20 degree angle before the stern gave out. Yes there was sub standard steel (which was standard for the time) the Daniel J Morrell was built with the same type 4 rot iron and survived 60 years on the great lakes. Yes the steel was more brittle but the ship wasnt built out of tin foil and also had support inside the ship holding it together. Ships start splitting once there over 6/700 feet because their length they cant hold themselves together when half of their body is up in the air and putting pressure on the middle of the ships where there not as reinforced as they are in the bow and stern.

    I haven't watched this movie yet, but I couldn't help but notice lot of scenes that had been remade into Cameron's movie.

      @@goldgaming3310 I know. :) I've read the book, actually. And James Cameron dedicated the movie Ghosts of the Abyss to book's author. I really need to watch it. Bc before Cameron's Titanic, it was most famous movie about it.
