Jess!! Would you ever be willing to do a video on what you guys eat in a week? Like, even if it’s the same meal over and over or leftovers, l feel like I need to see what it looks like to really eat what is coming out of my garden.
I'd love to see that, to. I've always been really curious what the daily meals and such look like for the Sowards family.

Same here! I told myself I wasn’t going to buy more this year….. but now I’m thinking I need to order some from Botanical Interest! I ordered from them last summer for fall and the seeds did really well, plus the packaging is beautiful and very informative. Highly recommend the company.

My chickens must be watching your channel. They have a better garden going on in their run then I do in my garden. 😂 I just noticed they have about 8 tomato plants, a bunch of corn and a lemon tree growing in there. 😂

We’ve got a pet rabbit and I’ve been tossing his bedding into a compost pile. I’ve got all sorts of stuff growing out of that pile right now I don’t even know what to do with it 😆

Wheat is easy to grow, It's grass.... 1 acre will supply YOU with enough for your family. Hard wheat is bread flour, soft wheat is pastry and cake. The hard part is threshing it, but I have a design that Miah could easily make that would make it much simpler.
I am growing Barley, hard wheat, sorghum and rice for SEED, so I can plant a crop for next year.

@@lynnbetts4332 I grew about 5 amaranth plants last year, they reseeded themselves and now I have an entire patch of amaranth.

When you started talking about Rutabaga, my first thought was, "Oh, that's the patch Rabbit wanted Pooh to go through next when Pooh was flying Piglet!" And then you said the only thing you knew about rutabagas was Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh talking about them. :D I feel so understood, lol!

@@jksatte tell her the same thing I tell people. My seed habit isn't a problem as long as long as I make the money to buy them. When I start pawning stuff or bumming money.. then they can talk.
Sharing a tip from a wise very healthy, very elderly lady that I met once. I took her word for it so I haven't researched this. She said always boil your rutabagas and turnips whole with the skin on. You keep more nutrition because the skin boils with them and they absorb nutrition from the water. The reason I love to do it that was is because they are so so much easier to peel after boiling. I can't stand peeling them raw. Then I cube them after I peel them once boiled. 😊

Hi, Jess. Don’t be surprised if your Walla Walla sweet onions do not build up. They are a “long-day variety - the kind us Northern Growers need. You reside in an area that needs the “short-day” varieties in order to bulb up properly. Hope this helps. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 6/16/2022.

Maybe this is just me over imagining things, but I can only imagine that since your brother-in-law and sister-in-law are there that you all are splitting the bounty of the fruits of your gardens. I would love to see his fall approaches if y’all wind up having canning days and such in the kitchen with one another. I have loved watching you grow and knowledge and as a family.🌻💚
Jess, please keep us updated on what you learn about growing wheat on a “homestead scale.” My family (three families all together) is turning raw 60 acres of land into an off-grid homestead. Our pigs have cleared the land for planting our wheat. We plan to grow Eincorn, to grind ourselves, and other hard and soft wheats. Would love to hear what you learn from your connections about growing wheat on a homestead.
I love seeds from Botanical Interests. They are a local company here in Colorado. And the illustrations on their packets are beautiful.
I’ve learned so much from watching your channel. It feels weird to offer advice, but maybe, being a warmer winter climate than Arkansas, you can overwinter your peppers if you plant them in pots, or a greenstalk, and keep it in the greenhouse for the winter. I noticed this year that my overwintered peppers have largely outperformed my newer plants.
This was fantastic! Please do this every season. As a first year gardener, it was so helpful to hear you talk through the logic and timing of both purchasing seeds and planting.
I ordered from them because of you!! And got my order yesterday, sat on my floor showing my wife every packet and explaining all the info that is on there that you told me about forever ago like the picture of the seedling. We even ordered some of the same things probably a few days apart it's so exciting. I am so lame LMAO 😂
Usually you remember to add closed captions, which is so helpful and I’m so appreciative of. I just want to respectfully bring attention when they’re missing because it’s hard for the deaf and neuro divergent to follow without them. Great info. For northern people, I live in Wisconsin. I've had patches of parsley and kale thrive through the snow. It wasn't really groeimg anymore but was big enough to harvest through the winter. A few times my perrenial walking onions didn't die back at all in winter after being covered in snow for weeks and it was like 0°F. It's definitely not a sure thing to plant a bunch of stuff expecting a hard freeze, but you might be surprised if you don't pull everything at the end of the season
I don't watch anyone else's videos every day, but I definitely wait for your videos because they motivate me so much to just get my stuff in the ground, and I knew about hornworms because of you and saved my tomatoes this season. Thank you Jess!

Jess, my favourite use for arugula is to make a “smoothie” combined with frozen wild blueberries, juice from 1/2 Meyer lemon and something creamy (Ie yogurt)… I love the peppery bite of the arugula with the mixture of tastes that are creamy, sweet and tart. 💚💙🍋

My favorite of beets is the variety that focuses on the greens. Greens have 50% of daily potassium required per serving. Love, love, love

Rutabaga mash is reallly nice. That's a traditional Swedish dish. Due to our cold growing season they can be rather strong, so often we do 50/50 with potatoes.
Shishito peppers blistered with everything bagel seasoning and some truffle aioli is just absolutely the best ❤❤❤

I live on Cape Cod, MA and rutabagas ( we often call them turnips) are a thanksgiving staple! We have a bunch of rutabaga farms here.

Your plan for fall starting the artichokes is great, but realize that in order to bear artichokes the following year, the seedlings need to be exposed to temps below 45 degrees, but above freezing. I kept mine in pots outside all winter here in NC, and covered with a frost blanket when temps got too low. I finally had my first artichoke harvest this year!

Potato replacement. Radish Hash…yum!
I took advantage of this sale and migardeners and now have tons of seeds for years. my partner was traveling and went to a fundraiser and a seed company donated a pallet of huge boxes of 2021 seeds he brought a huge pillow case size home for me and left his shirts ... so funny. they are burpee or on of those. no one was taking seeds. I feel so thankful. I have enough for my farm and others and thank God for that
I’m just sick! We’ve had 100+ temps and today was 108 here in north central Oklahoma. This morning I enjoyed time in the garden. I went out this afternoon and everything was fried. I started some seeds this afternoon for my fall garden. I can’t wait for the cooler temps
Your video reminded me to go and finish my order in my cart at Botanical Interests. I think one of the most overwhelming things about planting a large garden is the organization and timing of planting ....especially the fall garden. I thought organizing and schooling 10 children took a high level of management but I think managing a productive large garden is in a class of its own🤪
As someone living in tropical climate, it's interesting to see people in other side of the globe planning their farm.
Thank you, it was very helpful, now that I finally have a garden it's so cool to start getting into the seasonal habits. The one thing I would love at some point, is a seed saving video. Not just mentioning how you do it, but actual ideas for how you organize and store, and care for seeds. Like classroom style. I saved some from my pots last year, but now I just have baggies, some contents marked, some not, and it feels so out of control. Anyway, as always, grateful for your content, I have learned so much in the last two years that setting up and planting this year has been much easier than expected. I gave my youngest daughter, just home from first year of college, a garden tour (FUN). She loved it and the response was, "wow, I didn't know that it's so much more than just throwing seeds in the ground and weeding". I realized how much I really do know, even though I am still just a beginner backyard homesteader. She hauled a bunch of soil for me yesterday and offered to do some weeding. It was such an extra joy to include her. I learned it all from you. Undying gratitude.
I live in Central Florida, and I grow "spring" vegetables in the winter. it doesn't get cold enough to kill those here
I took a leap (for me) and planted four year old pumpkin seeds due to the learning I have found on your channel and they germinated well! I am excited for the harvest and glad I didn’t waste them!!!
So true on the freeze date. I grew up in Seattle and now live in Charleston SC. Same Zone. Vastly different growing methods!

I love their seed packets! I was introduced to their seeds at my local nursery years ago. I have heirloom varieties I am growing that are on their 15th generation. I love their seeds!
I'm in Newfoundland and it can (rarely) get to -20 degrees celsius here. -10 is common and snowfall is very, very high. You can keep plants going through the winter here. Last year I left six kale plants over the winter (with first frost early October and last frost mid-late June) and they all came back this year with no protection. They were under two feet of snow for months. I had a full harvest of kale leaves and flowers (they become a biennial here because of the long cold), it was my first harvest of the season and we had two big buckets of kale. I also overwintered brussels sprouts but they were just a little too wet from being under the snow to recover - they weren't dead, just a mess. I am guessing if I had put row cover on them they would have overwintered and produced full sized sprouts in the spring. This year I'm getting my greenhouse up and I'll be experimenting with keeping lettuces and other leafy greens going inside all winter. I'm guessing they won't do much since there's so little sun for us then, but if they even survive and start making strides again in the spring that would be an incredible thing. It was really awesome and encouraging to harvest so early this year.
Also team RUTABAGA FOREVER. We call them turnip here and they are one of our most important crops, most everyone grows the purple tops.
Yes! Minnesota here. We get just as cold as you. Kale, arugula, collards & many herbs (chives, sage, anise hyssop, catnip, red clover) over winter here. My goal is also to have a greenhouse to help extend our season. It's a different deal when you have a shorter growing season. Happy summer!

oh my gosh, Jess! With one comment you made today, you solved a long standing problem I have had! Although we live on 1/2 acre, our home is very small and I just don't have anywhere to start seeds indoors. I do the winter sowing method in milk jugs, but that is just not adequate for some of what I want to start. Your comment about starting some plants in your RV turned a light on for me! We have a RV that sits in our drive way and just doesn't get used for what it is intended for....so now, I do have a place to start all my seeds!! Yay! What a simple solution that I would never have thought of! Thank you!!!
ONION SEEDS. Jess, I am only a beginner gardener, 3 conservative years in. But all three years success with onions from seeds. I’ve learned that the easiest way is to mass sow (learned from you on tomatoes) in a large container, under grow lights. I personally use two foil roasting pans, the top with drain holes. I can get hundreds of onions in one container. They are very forgiving. This year I also tried them outside in a covered container mid winter in zone 5. They also flourished. I had so many onion starts that I super charged my compost pile with the excess. They pull apart so easy when ready to plug into your soil.

Haha you said you would die in Minnesota. Girl I lived there for a year and a half that I refer as “the longest 18 months of my life.” Imagine mid April with 2 feet of snow when you are used to daffodils and tulips having been spent by then.

I just went from an old 2018 vlog (vertical gardening) to this one. Holy cow, what a massive change!
Oooh R crops thoughts
1) Rhubarb- You don’t even need to peel it, if the skin isn’t horribly tough. Cook it with a sweet fruit (strawberries, blueberries, apples, peaches) and onions, and sweet peppers. Serve with pan fried pork chops. Yum!
2) Radishes. I had a white radish fresh from a farmer’s market in the Biergarten in Englischergarten in Munich years ago with bier, bretzelen (soft pretzels the size of a small pizza) and a variety of sausages. The radishes were very mild and as crisp and juicy as any of the popular hybrid apples. I’ve been trying to figure out the variety since then with no luck. Hailstone radishes look right, but were too spicy in my 7b garden.
I went overboard with seeds this year for my patio garden lol but I’ve learned so much from watching videos like this and also reading the seed packets lol
Shogoin, or white turnips are very often sweet enough to eat like an apple. Very good crunch. I salt mine...

I live in a tropical place. Sun and rain all year round. Not that I need the information, but just lovely to watch a seed haul and listen to others experience of gardening. Make me more appreciative of the climate that have been given to me. Tho I lack space, just few squarefeet, the all year round growing season makes up to it.

PARSLEY! I keep a row near garden entrance because all winter I go out , uncover the snow and have FRESH PARSLEY all winter !
So many things grow all winter under a snow.
And I leave a few 10+ smaller potatoes or 5+ hills potatoes ,their so much tastier after a frost !

Such a great talk with you Jess, I'm in Australia so of course we are the opposite of seasons but a lot of what you're saying just applies to the reverse season for us in Oz. I only have a small Autumn/Winter garden this year due to health problems & the dreadful weather we've had here on the South Coast of Oz, but it's still food. Now you've got me planning my Spring/Summer garden... gotta get my seeds out & decide what we'll be growing! Have a great day.
rutabaga and turnips we grow only for the tops. we cook them down until soft in chicken broth bacon grease garlic powder salt and pepper. it's so funny to me to grow for the root.
Red Russian Kale survived the grear freeze 2 weeks of below zero in nebraska with no cover. Also harvested a surprise watermelon one year in dec it was hidden under calabrese broccoli again no cover. some other stuff can be grown with a lil cover.
Oh Rutabegas ❤ you made my mouth water. I will be seeding mine in 10 days.😊 My family loves them mashed with carrots sour cream and a bit of Dill. yum yum can hardly wait.

Here in Mn, The weather could be so wishy-washy, it’s hard to tell when to start our garden for whatever season. But I will say, our winter hasn’t been that bad in a long time.

Those of us who eat keto, or low carb, use radishes to replace potatoes in our cooking. They are also really good fried like potatoes, or even cooked in a crock pot with a beef roast and onions. Roasting them is a great idea!! Thank you for sharing.

I want to tell people living in cold climates I am in Canada, Ontario to be exact and my HYSSOP lasts through the ENTIRE cold winter here.....I was freaking amazed by that. Still green leaves edable through it. Then exploded back in spring ..... AH MAZE ING!

Up here in southern Ontario I get one shot at everything except leafy greens, BUT I have a small unheated greenhouse and last year had spinach and lettuce from pots until November. First time I tried it, turned out well, proud of my experiment. Thanks for being so informative and encouraging.
Last year i added the larger leafs of my arugula in with my collards greens when i made it & my husband LOVES it. It gives off a really nutty smell to it & adds another layer of flavor.

The black radish is super spicy! I am
growing artichoke again and also cardoon, they are also perennials. My favorite collard is Georgia, its more tender than the other ones. Green beans I bought a dwarf french from seeds of italy, also a dwarf french velour (purple) from park seeds. These have very compact plant and very productive. I planted rutabaga in the green house and will transplant when weather gets better. I had no idea how it tasted like, got one at the store and roasted with salt, pepper, garlic powder, olive oil and rosemary- heaven! Also growing parsnip for the first time

I saw someone giving advice from you to hand crafted homestead. I thought it was cool. Now you talk about turning a sows ear into a silk purse well they are definitely giving it a hard go. Karolina and Ozzy are great kids.
