I recall watching the weatherman John Coleman on ABC in Chicago saying he liked Foolish Pleasure in the Kentucky Derby. I was 9 years old and had never watched a horse race but for some reason his prediction intrigued me so I made a point of watching and when Foolish Pleasure won I was hooked. He and I share a birthday, October 15. John Coleman recently passed away. RIP

Good commentary and we really get to see the horses warming up. I wish the current commentators would get rid of the fast cut style and just let the cameras roll on the post parade and the horses warming up...more like a news style. Again, thanks for posting the video...quite a trip down memory lane :)

One reason I like to watch these videos of old races is to be reminded of horses I "knew" and liked back in the day--not necessarily good or successful horses but ones whose name appealed to me for no apparent reason. In this case it was Bombay Duck. I don't know anything about his career, whether he won any significant race or was successful at stud. I just got a kick out of the silly name and it stuck with me for a long time. It was years later that I found out it wasn't completely random--the Bombay Duck is in fact a fish!
Bombay Duck was 2nd in the 1975 Wood Memorial (15 horses strong that year). He led every step of the way, but was caught at the last moment by none other than Foolish Pleasure.
Track announcer Chic Anderson completely missed the winner Foolish Pleasure at the end; he kept saying Prince Thou Art as the leader near the wire. Until the very end.
Prince Thou Art on the outside has the lead a head, reminds me of Mine That Bird when he came from the clouds but only this time Foolish Pleasure came out of thin air
The two California colts bumped into each other, Chic blew the call, saying the field was too bunched (it wasn't), back then before Bob Baffert and Doug O'Neill Cali horses rarely contended in the Kentucky Derby--in 1975 they might have run one/two....
Chic Anderson tried to hem and haw his way out of the blown call with his "they were bunched on the turn" line, but Foolish Pleasure was already out of traffic and in fourth, on the inside and well clear of the cavalry charge behind him. Chic was one of the greats, but this one was a big "Oops!"

Chick Anderson was a great horse caller but he did totally mess this one up. He didn’t even acknowledge that it was a mistake it was almost like he was pretending foolish pleasure came out of nowhere. And the ABC announcers never acknowledge that either. At least Chick got it right at the finish line.
This has to be the worst call I've ever heard. Foolish pleasure was right up there and he doesn't even call him until he's at the wire the f*** out of here
Man, what a butchered call. Not an easy job to call a horse race, especially with that much pressure, but the announcer called Foolish Pleasure as the horse on the rail in the far turn. Im surprised he lost track of him in mid stretch. Wasnt as though there was a ton of horses near the lead.
My grandfather’s horse Fashion Sale jockey Bill Gavidia said it was a beer bottle thrown from the infield back before they had separation with the turf track. It caused the whole group of horses to check back.

He was a great horse. People have no idea.
Foolish Pleasure was one of my favorites. I also loved Ruffian. Thanks for sharing this video of the 1975 Derby!

Thank you so much for uploading the "condensed" ABC broadcasts of these shows although I saw these shows live years ago. I don't get ESPN Classic.
He was a great horse. I had the privilege of visiting him in retirement at Spendthrift Farm in 1989. He was a fairly mean horse, however.
Amazing how Prince Thou Art morphed into Foolish Pleasure right at the end.
I ADORED Foolish Pleasure!! My first racehorse love. ❤️❤️
Today his great great granddaughter won the Fourstardave handicap. Her name is Got Stormy.

I have that book!
Something I found out the other day is that my neighbor, John, his father owned the horse Foolish Pleasure!
Foolish pleasure was better than people think. He was a great horse.
Wasn't Foolish Pleasure based out of Williston, FL?
i picked his name as username without knowing the greatness of this horse, now i've become a fan, i always enjoy watching this kind of videos

I miss howard cosell
Howard was clearly the best beyond all shadow of doubt !!
"The Kentucky Derby? There is no an adjective able to describe its greatness"
Jose Gregorio Guillot, venezuelan turfman and radio producer
Reminds me of the call when Mine That Bird won the Derby, but this is worse because Foolish Pleasure was the favorite.
no shit, like do your homework buddy, and get it right.
@jesusisnotallright s Uh, no
He didn't die
Worst call, probably lost his job
I loved it when ABC had the rights to "The Kentucky Derby".
Right:)
But I couldn't stand Howard Cosell. He should have stuck to boxing.
Agreed
I wish I had a $1 for every time Cosell says "the Shoe". What a great drinking game that must have been back in the day.
Wow, talk about a blown call. He never realizes it’s Foolish Pleasure until the finish line, lol.
That was pretty awful. Not one of Chick Anderson's better days.
More amazing as the colors of Prince Thou Art (Greentree?) were not black like John L. Greer if I got that right after 45 years 🐳👽🐳👽5️⃣2️⃣🎬✍️🎥🎱
@@hagendax Darby Dan Farm (not Greentree) owned Prince Thou Art/Sylvan Place. They were always fawn/brown, Greentree Stables were always pink/black.
Yeah I agree Chick Anderson not his best moment . It’s like he had his numbers messed up

Famous miscall of winner by Chic Anderson.

Bombay Duck was a Phipps horse.
I just discovered that Bombay Duck was the sire of my childhood horse, Paper Duck. I had no idea until 24 years later!
Track announcer Chic Anderson completely missed the winner Foolish Pleasure at the end; he kept saying Prince Thou Art as the leader near the wire. Until the very end.
First Derby broadcast for ABC. Won rights from longtime broadcaster CBS who still had Preakness and Belmont. ABC eventually got all triple crown races
One can be the best at anything but one screw up can define your career. This was one bad race call.
Precisely why I clicked on this, so I could see him for the other thing he's known for.
Prince Thou Art on the outside has the lead a head, reminds me of Mine That Bird when he came from the clouds but only this time Foolish Pleasure came out of thin air
He did not. It was just a blown call.
Chic Anderson RIP must love TH-cam. What a horrible call
silks were not even close, he really pulled a landry jones
He died in 1979. Back then, TH-cam was "halfway between T-Tube and V-Tube."
The two California colts bumped into each other, Chic blew the call, saying the field was too bunched (it wasn't), back then before Bob Baffert and Doug O'Neill Cali horses rarely contended in the Kentucky Derby--in 1975 they might have run one/two....
Oh, the humanity!
Foolish pleasure didn’t get a call until 50 yards from the wire. Lol.

Was there a coupled entry in this one? I see one and 1a.
Prince Thou Art (1, Black/white cap) and Sylvan Place (1a, red cap).
But he corrected it before finish
But it was a baffling mistake.
Wow. Did Chic Anderson call Prince Thou Art instead of Foolish Pleasure?
Yes, he did. The critics called his call "Prince Thou Ain't."
I ride his grandson!! I only recently figured out this is his father so iv been trying to learn more about him!
not chic anderson 's best day lol by the way, mike battaglia is what 90 now?
He is calling Honey Mark in front in the stretch when in reality it was Folish Pleasure.
Was there a Racing Horse NAMED: BORN TO LOSE N WIN?
Fun fact: some asshole chucked a beer bottle at pacesetter Bombay Duck during the race. Apparently it raised a welt on the poor horse’s rump.

The Thin Man.
Yikes the announcer really blew that call

the race caller so confused
I think Prince Thou Art and Sylvan Prince were coupled..
Yes. PTA'a jockey had a brown/white cap, SP's jockey wore a red cap.
that has to go down as thew worst commentary on a horse race ever, Never mentioned Foolish Pleasure until he picked up the running.
Wow...forgot about Rushing Man (the gray) and the beer can thrown from the drowd...I think if that hadn;t happened he might have won...
No. Bombay Duck started to tire leaving the far turn and caused RM to check HARD.
My grandfather’s horse Fashion Sale jockey Bill Gavidia said it was a beer bottle thrown from the infield back before they had separation with the turf track. It caused the whole group of horses to check back.
hat a horrible job calling the race
I never liked him. Ruffian would have beaten him.
rathakitty It is not his fault that Ruffian broke down
She WAS beating him-when she broke down-
Rhionda hAFFHAM Being in the lead by half a length in the backstretch is not beating anybody.

Horrible call.
Yup old Howard was very annoying.
