congrats bb!!! amsterdam is sooo chill! and i call this the travelling library -- books that must go with me whenever i move from place to place. love seeing that our boy Bret is going with ya!
Congrats! Amsterdam is a cool place. Also about Moby-Dick: It goes fast paced for 100ish pages, then slowish for the middle 200, then for the last 100 it is very very fast and unputdownable. Don’t read anything about whales or whaling before reading to make the mid part more engaging as a read. Congrats again!
Hi Valentina, I hope you have a lot of fun in Amsterdam. One tip from me as a Dutch booklover, take a trip to the city of Maastricht, it's a 2,5 hour trainride from Amsterdam and it has one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world (according to the Guardian): Selexyz Dominikanen. It's a medieval church that has been repurposed into a bookstore. You'll love it. Maastricht is worth a day-trip otherwise as well.
Hello! Thank you so much for this information. I am 100000% going to be taking weekend trips to neighboring cities and this has moved Maastricht to the very top of my list. If you have any more bookstore recs please let me know 🙌
@@bookpogo There´s an English language bookshop called the Book Exchange on the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam that has a really good selection where you can find some nice old copies in good condition for fair prices. Hope you will like it!
Congrats to being accepted into grad school! Amsterdam is a fantastic city to live in. I would actually bring only three unread books max with me, especially not some I feel sentimentally connected to. You will buy and find more favourites while you are there and then you will be confronted with the decisions which one to leave behind when you are going to return. So I would save your loved ones from that decision.
Amsterdam is really nice! You should check out Copenhagen and Brussels as well since they’re close by. I really want to read The Talented mr Ripley but I got a trip to Italy in august and I want to read it when I’m there.
I was in Brussels a few months again and I really want to go back. Copenhagen is definitely on my list too. Italy in August will be wonderful 🙌 I completely relate to that sentiment, wanting to read something somewhere specific
Weed shops in ams are trash. I suggest finding a legit plug/shop. Ams also hella expensive. I bought food from the grocery store then took it to the park to eat. Lmk how winter is there i hear it can get rough I want you read any of your short stories please
I didn’t go to any in Amsterdam but Willie Wortel in Haarlem is awesome. Great prices and great bud but limited options for a baby like me who doesn’t smoke spliffs. As for winter I’m a midwesterner so I feel (and hope) I can handle it. Trust this will be documented on here 🙌
You know, of all of Bret Easton Ellis, I’m probably most fond of his first, Less Than Zero. Congratulations on Amsterdam! (Maybe try a Royale With Cheese). I did NOT like A Little Life, but to each their own.
LTZ is definitely special. I’m waiting for the perfect copy to find its way to me. Thank you so much!!! And Haha, I reserve zero judgement for that stance
Congrats! I know there’s a pretty good selection of books in English in Netherlands bookshops. On the other hand it’s hard to pay for books in grad school!I’m excited for your journey, best of luck🎉
Stoner by Williams is smaller and would fit nicely. Pun def intended! 🥳🍻 *edit: i guess i can only vouch for the nyrb paperback edition. Also, congrats. Hope you have an incredible time in Amdam. Make your story awesome 🤜🏽 🤛🏻
Blessings to you that is quite the accomplishment 👍 I would not think you have to carry much, that is a very "bookish" city you're headed to. I believe you can finish all the books in this vid over the spring and summer here. "Demons" is typically good like any Dostoyevsky but it is SLOW and long, I would recommend more of his humorous short stuff ("The Double," "A Disgraceful Affair," "The Village of Stepanchikovo") first so you don't burn out on him! 👍
@@bookpogo 😃😺 Great I'm glad to hear, then go for it! 👍 I mean you are loving "The Adolescent" (the one of his that I haven't finished yet) so that says it all - you are even more of a "Dosthead" than I am!
Thank you so very much!! And idkkk I’m considering it but I’m a stubborn paper-loving traditionalist 😭 I’m more inclined though now that I know they’re waterproof

Embrace your new journey with strength & courage. My favorite Dutch scholar is Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She's an incredibly important voice right now, as the Netherlands has been struck with Socialist ideology & radical terror*st attacks. If you get a chance to read Michael Herr’s Dispatches I would be interested in your opinion.
I’ve made note of it!
I would bring the Picture of Dorian Gray, but that's just me (I'm perfect)
