I feel like this is a problem that arises from her parents. If you look back at the past earlier seasons her mom seemed like a helicopter mom in a way. Like Chen always had to prove herself
@Tonijanai That's actually a good point. She's constantly having to prove herself to her mom/parents. She too often does the same to her partners. Damn it now I kinda empathise with her a little bit

Don't worry the strong badass females will save him. And I have loved this show and Chenford from the start.
They have not ruined his character or made him weak. Their goal with his story this season was to show that the strong butthead that we met in season 1 arrived there as a result that he had not dealed with. Now we see the barrier crack
