It's not an idol thing, it's a woman thing. It's referenced a lot in Asian shows, anime too. For example, see Hiratsuka Shizuka of Oregairu. And yes, women _are_ taught to be ashamed of getting old. There's this Asian age counting system where it makes you 1 or 2 years older than your age by the normal calendar, so it might be that as well. It works like, you are 1 year old at birth and age up every new year.
