Fantastic explanatory video Desi. I’m working my way through your online fretboard theory course at the moment. Like this video, it’s superb, clear, theory eduction with lots of real music examples and explanation which is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I played in my teens in the 80s but have renewed my playing after 40 years and you’re teaching me stuff I’d never even heard of before. Heartfelt thanks for everything you do.
I think this is the first time I've actually started to understand what a mode is. Usually, when I hear the term 'mode', my brain tunes out because I assume the topic is more advanced than what I want to focus on right now. But you kind of snuck an explanation in past my brain in this lesson. So if I understand correctly, Sweet Child O' Mine is actually in the Key of G Major, not D Major as most sheet music suggests, but in Mixolydian mode? And that means it uses the notes from the G Major scale but the tonic (tonal center) of the song is the 5th degree of G Major which is D Major? Then, to further confuse matters, everything is tuned down a half-step so that the song is actually in the Key of F# Major using Mixolydian mode with a tonic of C# Major?
This is unreal... I've easily spent over $5k on instructional materials for guitar. My library has a vast array of DVD's, instructional materials, yearly memberships for online materials, etc, etc.. I have just discovered Desi Serna in the last 24 hours. I've never came across his teachings and/or materials. Seriously !! His playing and technique is flawless for one: however, I just can't get over how he lays his lessons out. Unfortunately I've spent a small fortune on materials, which are nowhere near the level or the caliber of Desi's materials. His teaching, approach, layout (especially his focus on how a particular scale is incorporated into a specific songs), quality of material, practical implementation, manuerism (nice guy)... I could go on and on. I'm telling ya... This stuff is really, really good. Just save yourselves a lot of money and precious time... Study with this guy.

You got it 👍 See my book Fretboard Theory chapter 8 for a full explanation of modes.
How did you nail the guitar tone
I used the Inspired by Slash pack from Tone Junkie. tonejunkiestore.com/inspiredby
