- The 2001 UEFA Champions League Final was a football match that took place at San Siro in Milan, Italy, on 23 May 2001, to decide the winner of the 2000-01 UEFA Champions League. The match pitted German side Bayern Munich against Spanish side Valencia. The match finished in a 1-1 draw, but Bayern clinched their fourth title by winning 5-4 on penalties. This was also their first European Cup title in a quarter-century, also representing Valencia's second consecutive final defeat (2000 and 2001). As all the goals in the match were scored from penalties, with also Bayern Munich missing a penalty in normal time and a penalty shoot-out was required to decide the winner, this UEFA Champions League match became an "all-penalty" final. The 2001 final was a meeting of the two previous seasons' losing finalists - Bayern Munich lost to Manchester United in 1999 and Valencia lost to Real Madrid in 2000.

This game was the last time a non-Spanish side beat a Spanish side in a European Cup final. Since then there have been an incredible 17 European Cup finals (9 in the Champions League, 8 in the Europa League) between a non-Spanish and a Spanish side, and all of them were won by the Spanish team.
Alaves lost against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup in the same year as well. Crazy if you think about it

Foi uma fila de 25 anos pro meu Bayern na UCL. Depois do tri em 1974-75-76, tivemos derrotas nas finais para o Aston Villa em 1982, Porto em 1987 e Manchester United em 1999.
Esta final de 2001 foi feinha, mas o importante foi levar a orelhuda para Säbener Straße pela quarta vez.

Not a fan of bayern munich(actually hate them) but to be honest and fair they have been really unlucky in ucl finals despite dominating their rivals.

@@L.death_note978 No, this rule has existed since forever. It was just a typical behavior of European referees to not enforce it, I don't know why. After VAR they finally started enforcing it, but the rule didn't change at all, it already existed. In other continents it has been enforced since long before VAR though
