Duane Allman's daughter searches for father she never knew in new memoir

- Galadrielle Allman, daughter of the late rock musician Duane Allman, is out with a new memoir, "Please Be With Me," in which she pieces together the story of her father's life. Anthony Mason reports.
When she said she reached her fortieth birthday, I raised my eyebrows. The lovely lady looks 27. That picture of Duane and her makes my eyes well up. She isn't grieving entirely alone.
What a beautiful and honest young lady...Duane is proud...yeah...he's definitely overjoyed.
Her daddy touched the touched the heart of everybody that ever or will ever hear his work. She should be proud.
Galadrielle's book actually helped me deal better with the death of my own father ten years ago. She's a gem, whose hard work changed my life in some very personal ways.
She looks like she is in her twenty's and I am glad she took the time to dig into the past to find out what a beautiful person her dad was. The world knows Duane is the best slide guitarist of all time and gave us the best music as a gift from his solo career to the Allman Brothers Band. As a musician he gave me the drive to play the drums and there will forever be a hole in my heart for not being able to say thank you to him.
So sad that she never got to know her brilliant, but fast living father. I was lucky enough to see him play at the Fillmore East on 3/12/71 along with Elvin Bishop and the mighty Johnny Winter. Good times!
I would've loved to have seen that concert. Johnny Winter is probably 1 of the best slide-guitarists around. He's so quick with his guitar, I'm surprised he never caught the thing on fire from his lightning fast fingers.

The ending of this interview really brought me to tears.... .it really did. As Galadrielle describes her dream where she saw her dad and hugged him in her dream it just really made me cry.. Wow.... I can only imagine what Galadrielle feels as Duan's daughter. What an amazing story. I would love to find her book it looks beautiful and fascinating.
Just as Galadrielle's father's music is a gift to all of us in this universe, so too is she a gift to the world.

Damn it, I didn't expect myself to start crying. The Allman Brothers is the only band that's had that affect on me.
I like to think that had Duane lived, he would've reconnected with Galadrielle and formed a relationship with her, like how Gregg did with his own children. Honestly I like to think that he does that now as a spirit.
Hang in there my friend, your Dad brought me so many hours of comfort with his music, in times when I was low he brought me up to a big smile!

Oh how I can relate to her feelings, I lost my father in a airplane crash when I was only 3 yrs old. However I have several pictures of him holding me and sitting me as a little kid on the wing of his airplane at the airport he always flew out of. Thanks to my grandfather I have home movies of he and my mother when they were young which I treasure.
Im reading the book now, on my Nook. Or should I say Im savoring the book? I was a teen in the 70s so I had to reach back a lot to get southern rock music and loved the Allman Bros. Galadrielle, Thank you for writing this book, its great about your dad and the band and all the music greats. Its also well written for us children of the 70s who love the glimpse back. My Dad came to me in a dream after he had passed too, and hugged me. I believe you girl, I don't care what brought that about but it also gave me enormous comfort. Thank YOU!
I want to get her book. My daughter lost her dad when she was 6yrs old. I 'had' to leave him when she was 2yrs old due to his addictions. She only has a couple memories of her own, but I wouldn't allow ANYONE to badmouth him in her presence. That was Her Father! He had an illness he couldn't overcome. Everyone tells her about the great guy I married. So I pray all your dad's relatives, friends & fans help you KNOW what a talented, beloved guy he was/is. His music has healed my Soul throughout my lifetime. ❤ I hope your journey has healed your Soul also. He NAMED YOU!! And what a beautiful name it is...as Special as you seem to be also. He watches over you. Visitations through dreams are REAL!! Thank you for continuing to share your dad and now your book with us fans, and for other children who know what its like to loose their dads. ❤
What a great chronicle of many lives this book is. Music is a sideline, people and complex relationships are the heart of her book. One of the best books I have ever read.
Your book touched me deeply. I listen to Duane's music every day, and it is one of the cornerstones of my life. I am grateful that you shared your journey, and the road goes on forever. I watched the video for your book and I was at that performance in Chicago.

I have been a big follower of the band and especially Duane since the news broke that he died on October 29, 1971. Ever since that day I have been trying to turn the clock back. It has been 42 1/3 years and it still bothers me. This book is an excellent read and a must for any Duane Allman fan. I caught the show at the Beacon on Friday the 14th and it still frustrates me every time they take a solo Duane made famous and change it up. Thank you Galadrielle for opening up your heart, mind and world and giving us a new insight into the life of Duane, your mom, and the entire ABB family. Really well written and executed. BRAVO!
P.S. It would be nice to see Dickey join them for a show in this final year.
It's very cool that she's doing this, Duane left us too soon but, the legacy never ends. I've seen quite a few videos lately on YT talking about her search. The part where she was at a concert still just a baby in diapers in her moms arms, too little to remember being there but, others took her there through memory. Halleluyah!!!

Duane Allman’s music had a profound affect on me. I had just started college in Charleston, West Va. in 72 and my new friends turned my on to Fillmore East and Eat a Peach.

I was turned on to the Allman Brothers by a DJ. They blew me away
When I heard Duane and Dickie together was just great and that's what they were great together. The first time I saw them was in Piedmont park in ATL. for free. And every time they come to Atlanta there after. When the crashes happened I couldn't go back to see them. Just broke my heart. R.I.P. Brothers
So sad, but every allman child can relate. Gregg and his son Michael seemed to pick and choose what children they wanted to be a part of. were family too, if you ever want to reach out and learn more about the hidden family.

Look at his fingers in the still photos. Wow they are fing long. He was such a a unique player player. He was the first player that I noticed using his thumb over the top of the feet board. At them At the time Hendrix and Johnny Winters were the only other players I knew to do so.
Out of the thousands of geniuses out there who play the guitar, there are 3 that are just so absolutely undeniable that it's almost beyond comprehension.
They are in a class all by themselves.

Those 3 guys all possessed the ability to move the furniture around inside your head, and leave you with something memorable.
Dazzling technical ability is great but it's not always about that. It's more about really saying something that words can't say.
Duane also has another daughter with him and his childhood sweetheart they placed for adoption in 1967, the baby was born deaf.
Greg says the first time Duane played slide he killed it
He said he was horrible and they would just let him get it out of his system and then they could play. He did say that he was killing it in no time, just not from the get go.
That's not possible dude Gregg was in Callie at that time. When Gregg got to Florida, the last member to join ABB that was the first time Gregg heard big bro killin it on slide.
@@da324 Duane took up slide seriously after Gregg went back to Callie. Gregg did say Duane was horrible at first. My ears don't hear Duane playin slide while with Hour Glass, or The Almond Joys.

Duane was the Allman Brothers Band. When he died & Gregg 'the narc' took over as lead man, I never listened to another Allman Brothers song ever again.
And that is probably why they never ever had any success ever again.

bloscoe Yes, Gregg's talent is songwriting and singing, not guitar playing. Listen, Duane Allman might be my absolute favorite guitar player, but the Allman Brothers Band was [and is] much more than just Duane. Dicky Betts just might be the most underrated player on the planet, simply because of the mystique around Duane. He held his own quite well when trading solos and there would have been no guitar harmony leads without him. Not blues, but Jessica is a mighty fine instrumental, in my opinion. When the band returned with Shades of Two Worlds - with Warren Haynes on second guitar, Warren channeled Duane's slide feel beautifully (listen to the opening track, "End of the Line"). That record, in particular, really took me back."Nobody Knows," penned by Dicky, recalls the feel of Dicky's "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," one of the truly great ABB recordings. And, I am enjoying the Haynes-Trucks era as well. Has anything matched those first two records? Perhaps not, but that does not mean they haven't still put out a lot of good music since then.
