I was in this show during the summer and I almost cried at the end of Whatshername because it was such a life changing experience for me and I made so many new friends
i don't think people realize this score was written for broadway. it's not going to sound punk in any way. it's not going to sound like the original. the song was altered to fit to the broadway musical, not to fit into a green day show
I agree and it works with this song. But everything else needs to be punk. If you look at the bootleg of that LA cast doing it it’s absolutely beautiful, and they still made it just as punk. It’s because the actors and people in charge knew what punk was and how to properly adapt it to the stage. I’d love for American idiot to be revived on Broadway but not like this.
depends on how you feel it to me, this version (yes i know it's broadway) is empty as hell this song is meant to start out quiet and suddenly burst into power and agression via the spamming of power chords considering this is broadway......i couldn't expect that power here but i feel very little emotion from this version which also makes it meaningless to me (that's my point)
@@ishikawa8730 have you seen it as part of the show though? I loved this song so much even before watching the show, but in the context of the show, all of the meanings and emotions become evident, and I personally think it's just so good :))
This show is the best punk rock experience you could ever sit through. If you do not like the show, you do not like a good, deep and emotional storyline, as well as punk rock music, and rock music. This coming from a guy who also likes other Broadway musicals such as Matilda, How to Succeed, Book of Mormon etc. And am also a rocker, and like rock music of all kinds - punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal, rockabilly, country rock. I like a variety of music genres.
Seriously, people, it's easy to shit on people's head like that! "Gay up", "bad cast", "perfect song, crap whatever". Shut up, all of you, it makes me sick. You should get a life, seriously. It's a brilliantly executed musical, adapted by the band itself, with great actors who obviously had a blast. What else do we need? Is authenticity not good enough anymore?!?!? Damn!
As a musician i can say that this version is musically better than original. The multivocals are amazing, piano too. I prefer this version even if the original version is more heavy and punk.
I felt they did that magical second arrangement payoff for several of the songs in the musical. It was part of the charm of the show, "oh look, that's a new way to hear that tune". I know it's one of the reasons I loved it!
Why would you conduct the cello solo at the end? Just let her play the last part as if she's a professional musician who can figure out the best way to express a four measure rubato without training wheels.
acidic jew it really isn't necessary. she's like trying to show off like that. I've seen a lot of musicians like that and it's really annoying. the cello player was clearly not paying attention to her
There could be multiple reasons she was conducted. Maybe she wanted to be conducted, or maybe the director wanted specifically that much slowing of the tempo. In the end the band is a team, and you don't know all the variables. Stop judging. Also it's not a rubato, it's a ritardando. a rubato is when you slow the tempo temporarily and then return to the original.
It depends on how you feel. In the original, it's more of him just looking back and remembering the time. Here, it's him looking back, but he actually feels genuinely upset about it. Though the similarity between the two is that they don't feel sorry about what happened, no matter what.
Marine Raiders MILSIM agreed the song is more emotional with Billie, he expresses his emotions in all his songs in a very unique way on my opinion. But this was a very good performance! I'll admit that
absolutely agreed this lacks the power that makes it addictive it's not about all the voices and multiple instruments it's about the quiet part that eventually get's fired up by pure aggression sounds they took that almost completely away and put more voices in that overpower the actual instrumental power sound that the original has also if you like a song when you listen to it for the first time than that's mostly gonna be the version that you like the most (it's how the brain works haha)
I don't know how I feel about this, the song as a whole is great but the final line lacks some of the stress that Billie got into it in the album track
Need help!!! What is the name of the guy with the shaved head on the first mic from the right in the back row? He reminds me of the actor that played Billy in the 2012 revival of Carrie the Musical. This is bugging me!!!
Well i hope you know Billie Joe wrote this show. So it wasn't written by your idea of musical theatre majors. So I hope you just don't like green day or musicals. Which is sad
I’ve literally been to hundreds of plays and concerts in my life, some better than others some really bad, never walked out on one finding merit even the worst production. This thing on the other hand is an exception. I lasted 15 minutes before walking out! Sound was 100% distorted couldn’t understand anything anybody was saying because all the actors have a tendency to be yelling and hollering all at the same time and jumping around. The plot was nonexistent, the lighting was ugly the actors looked pretty bad. I know they’re made to look that way but it was not very attractive look. To me it was just like a bunch of teenagers cranking up a stereo till it’s distorted and jumping on all the furniture! Blah blah bla ameican la balaah! Seriously nearly a decade later and I’m still angry with that band for subjecting you to that stealing 150 my hard-earned dollars! So If i ever have the opportunity to speak with any one connected to that play, including the band members, I’m going to demand my money back plus a tip for my lost time!

Whatsername always gets me in tears. The Broadway version gets me building a flood
It’s so freaking good.
I was in this show during the summer and I almost cried at the end of Whatshername because it was such a life changing experience for me and I made so many new friends
You are so lucky.
Me too lol. It was amazing

Princess0fAwkward That's completely Right
This scene took place after Whatsername left Johnny. Of course it sounded sad
It may not sound punk but it is. The lyrics are punk

This song takes on so much more meaning and feeling when presented in the context of the broadway show
depends on how you feel it

Feel in love with each cast member....just a great experience...setting here in tears
Damn, we are all whatsher or his name to somebody
"What's that nerdy girl's name who sucked in gym class?" I can only imagine how those jerks at my old school would describe me.

Very late reply, but beautifully put. 10-year Green Day fan looking forward to more years 🤙🏾
JGJ looks so different from when he had to have his Moritz hair for Spring Awakening.
This is a lot more melodic than the original but lacks the kickass vibe. Love both of them

10 years ago, I saw it on Broadway and got my mind blown... Still listening to it religiously
John Jr. Is just amazing in everything !
This version always makes me tear up
John is so good tho, his emotion.
This is awesome,goosebumps all over.

The original will always be better. However, this version is a better musical score then song
As a Green Day fan I love the original but as a theatre nerd with an education in music I appreciate the layering, strings and chorus
I felt they did that magical second arrangement payoff for several of the songs in the musical. It was part of the charm of the show, "oh look, that's a new way to hear that tune". I know it's one of the reasons I loved it!

Idk maybe it’s something the director wanted or maybe it’s something the cello player wanted, hell maybe the the director wanted him too.

Anyone know where I can find this "Broadway Sessions" version of "We are the waiting"? It was online a number of years ago, but can't find it now.
The fucking ending is Killing me everytime because IT IS sooooo soo beautiful...
I wish I could afford to see broadway shows.
I wish ...
I mean yeah I do prefer the original but this is still really good
dear santa,
this year all i want is my very own JGJ to love me forever and never leave me.
love, me
Check out Leslie Mcdonald at Joes Pub....Fancy
I cant get into it without Billie's voice.
It depends on how you feel. In the original, it's more of him just looking back and remembering the time. Here, it's him looking back, but he actually feels genuinely upset about it. Though the similarity between the two is that they don't feel sorry about what happened, no matter what.

@SuperGilfte Oh yes. I would as well, but it would be worth it to have him help me up again :3 :3 :3
I don't know. This is a little try-hardy. If it were half the backing singers it wouldn't sound so busy, I think.
jaja 2:10
GAY IT UP?!?!?!?!?!? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
oof the main singer can't really have the eye-liner
plus you barely see it
John Gallagher Jr just doesn't suite this role, he would've made a better Will
Tabi B I always thought the Tunny kid would've made a great Johnny, but John Gallagher did a good job.
god, next time when you try to do some stuped thing on yours life make sure don't used one of the best songs ever made !!! thanks.

Am I the only guy who doesnt like JGJ?

yup
