Just a friendly reminder with paddle board leashes: you and your leash need to be able to separate quickly in case your leash snags on something on the bottom of moving water (rivers mostly) so that it doesn’t pull you under and make you drown
Absolutely! Thanks for the important comment. A quick release leash is a must for any rivers or fast moving water. I talk a little more in depth about that in this safety video th-cam.com/video/8fKEK_1eQWg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mnjHEr0AA9bKt314
Thanks for the video. I went yesterday for the very first time, went with a group. I was surprised at 90% of them sat or kneeled on the board almost the entire time. I was able to stand and I will practice that more but the reality is that I was shocked to learn that you don't have to stand and it's just another way to do it but no better no worse.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Welcome to paddle boarding; congratulations on your first paddle! Did you have fun? Absolutely! Keep in mind you will get more power from your paddle stroke and be more efficient when you are standing. One of the reasons I love paddle boarding is you can make it whatever you want. Hi! So I just got a paddle board as a graduation gift. I’m a girl whose around 250lbs. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on YT about beginner paddle boarding. Do you have any advice for me? Do I wear a swimsuit or other clothes in the water?
Hi Heidi! Thanks for watching and reaching out. Congratulations on the new board and hobby! 🙌🏼 The top two things are to be safe and have fun! Check out some safety videos for gear, reading winds, water temperatures etc. The full video for the top 5 common beginner mistakes has more details and tips. You can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/PEims8KR9Rg/w-d-xo.html I have lots more resources on my TH-cam Channel and blog too. Don't stress about who is watching or what you look like. If you've watched some of my other stuff, I love to goof around, wear funny hats, just be me, and have fun out on the water. Don't feel you have to stand or do anything specific. Paddle boarding is whatever you want it to be! As for what to wear. Always dress for the water temperatures. If it's warmer water and weather be sure you're protecting yourself from the elements. Beyond that, wear what you're comfortable with! I hope this helps and please reach out with any other questions. Have the best time out on the water! 🤙🏼

I was stuck between a nice ride in kayak or a nice paddle board, and i realized i can do the best of both worlds with a paddle with kayak seats and paddle lol
i live in the pan-handle of florida and i paddle board every day. with that being said, i still learned about the weather. i usually just go by flags and don’t paddle with anything above red or purple and when flags aren’t out i just stay close to shore!
Thanks for the comment! I fully agree that you should always check the weather (tides too in your case). I love that you are using the beach flags as a reference. Better safe than sorry! Keep on having fun and being safe 🫶🏼
lol fair enough! I remember when SUP was new to Canada and it was put in the same category as canoes and kayaks and thus you had to have a bailer too. 😆
All about doing what you enjoy and having fun! Check out my video on how to get back on a paddle board. Super important to still know how to do this even if you’re sitting. th-cam.com/video/KLzWnols0GA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=t-GtvAeI8MwpWkpU Stay safe and have fun!!
I would add- save enough energy to return. I alsothink it's important to take lessons. I am tight with the lifeguards here and one of them told me, "These people buy their boards at Costco and then we have to go get them. They just don't know what they're doing." So true!!
Yes! Fully agree that taking a lesson is a great tip for beginners and paddling within your capabilities. 🙌🏼 All about staying safe to keep having fun out on the water!
@@PaddleAdventurer And along with being fun and adventurous, it is the BEST workout!! It works the entire body! I burn 300 calories in an hour. I stay out for 2 hours and then there's the loading & unloading the board from my car!! Time for a beer or ice cream!!
Yes! I use a general weather app to check overall conditions but I also use a specific app for wind speed & direction as well as swell. And if you live somewhere with tides & currents you'll need to check that too. Often apps will combine some of these and I find some work better than others in certain areas. I talk a little bit about it in the long form of this video here: th-cam.com/video/PEims8KR9Rg/w-d-xo.html And I have a blog post on reading the wind: paddleadventurer.com/how-to-read-the-wind-for-paddleboarding/
Depends on where you are paddling. For Canadian laws check out this video th-cam.com/video/8fKEK_1eQWg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S6BT0o8-qisft8ka Some lakes in the national parks also have regulations to prevent cross contamination. Regardless, wash, clean and dry between lakes/oceans is good practice.
Depending on where you live having a PFD or lifejacket might be a legal requirement; in Canada it is. I'm in the camp of you should always wear it since you can't control every situation. There are lots of different types out there depending on your abilities and needs. Hope this helps!
I personally think it's always a good idea to have a PFD as unexpected things can happen and in some places, like Canada, it's required by law. th-cam.com/video/8fKEK_1eQWg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pqFoQ32H1xzVmqNX
If you need to turn sharply a pivot turn is best and is lots of fun to practice. I wouldn’t say that’s a beginner stroke. Most beginners struggle going straight vs slightly being able to turn.
Come on man you can't be that stupid. It was a tip on being most efficient in your paddling and on how to go straight. You're assuming anybody cares about your stupid comment.
Having a way to communicate is important, especially in an emergency. Some phones are water proof or there are waterproof cases or sleeves you can get.
good tips but you make paddeling the most boring sport ever. An beginner should not take any risk at all, so no phone, no lease no current no lifejacket. Just a simple safe place to have fun and feel free. an beginner does not go for miles.
That why there literally called stand up paddle board! Yes u are supposed to stand! I mean by all means you do you na shave fun but you made 2 pints that were useless!
100% you do. In some places, it is a legal requirement, and unfortunately, people die every year or require help because they aren't prepared with the correct knowledge and safety equipment. A lot of people avoid something because it looks one way or another. I'm here to tell you it's not about how you look or what others are doing, but about having fun and staying safe so you can keep having more fun!

What if your on a starboard like me and need least weight possible
Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m not sure what your question is. Why do you need less weight?
❤😅
For increased safety measures, increase your body weight so you can float if fall in the water!
lol but it might not help with your overall health. A PFD is the best option for safety!
what about connecting a leash to your neck?
I definitely wouldn’t recommend that. Ankle, calf or waist.
How comes u guys don't know about the j stroke?
The j-stroke is a great paddle stroke however not a mistake beginners make or an initial stroke to focus on when first learning.
If you are a good swimmer and know what you are doing you most defently don´t need a lifejacket. Espacielly if you aren´t alone.
