I'm a district resident sub (meaning after five years, all the schools know me) and this is hilarious. Pretty sure I've been EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE at one point in time. You just learn to adapt like any other job. I saw someone say you're a warm body...I mean, not really. They have people at every school who can fill in on a daily basis. The idea is to have someone SOMEWHAT competent, but depending on your ability to communicate with the kids and how their class is structured and/or their collective behavior, it can devolve in to that.
Some subs come in HOPING someone starts w them😭. Everyone will be sitting there and they go OFF and start lecturing you about their job history and how we don’t know them like that. Sir we’re just doing our worksheets, RELAX!
One time in 9th grade my friend was suicidal and had skipped school, she reached out to me for help, the substitute took my phone and refused to give it back, even though I explained that to her. I also lived in the ghetto, where anything could've happened to me and I was alone for a couple days. I went to the school counselor and they made her give my phone back.
Substitute: “Okay guys just do any homework that you gotta do for this class or for another class just keep the noise level down” Me: *Proceeds to sit at the back with friends*
Honestly, the last is actually what subs get paid to do. Just a warm body in the class.
