Precisely. If such a movie were made today, it would be so watered down so as to not be funny at all. Rather it would be all preachy.
I'll be honest, when I saw this scene as a little kid, it freaked me out. Eerie mood, scary music, locked in, and a guaranteed murder. The humor is much more noticeable for us adults now. But as a kid, pretty scary movie lol. Love this film!
I was about ten when I saw it and I thought it was hilarious, especially Capote's character.

Peter Falk stopped next to my seat at a Ram football game way back when to talk to fellow sitting in front of me. Saw him after the game sitting in a classic Rolls Royce. My claim to fame.

This comedy was like a fine cheese; it took a few decades for it to age to perfection. I find it funnier and more entertaining every time I see it. Could you imagine lining up a cast like that today, even if the talent was available?
Sure you could. The big names in the cast are mostly women over 40, who always struggle to get acting work no matter how big they were in the past. Just look at the Best Actress Oscar winners from 10 or more years ago,, and start making calls. You'd get a great bunch of actresses to choose from, working much cheaper than if they were in the "right" demographic. If Natalie Portman's not interested, talk to Kate Winslet. If Renee Zellwegger wants too much money, then Reese Witherspoon or Charlize Theron probably won't. If Meryl Streep is too hard to work with, you can always settle for Helen Mirren or Judi Dench. Sooo many great middle-aged actresses who have faded from view.

I Love this movie
I sat next to my father in a cinema watching this when it first came out, and I'm amazed at how completely it's kept it's morbid charm and humor. It's like one of those attractive women who barely age, like Kim Basinger - you know there's a secret to it you'll never understand. In it's lasting charm and fun humor I'd compare it to Young Frankenstein, which came out about the same time. Truman Capote did an impressive job in this. The very awkwardness of his acting lent a realistic appeal to it that still lives on with the rest of the film's quirky appeal. It's the kind of flick that leaves you not just entertained but nostalgic for more innocent days, at least if you've lived them back in that more creative and carefree America.

I'd seen this film when I was a kid, I'd heard of Truman Capote but I really know too much about him until years later through the biopic movies with Philip Seymour-Hoffman and Toby Jones. What I loved about Capote vs The Swans was the 8 part episodes which gave you a real and detailed depth of Capotes character, fears and inner demons. Tom Hollander did an AMAZING job as Truman👏👏👏👏👏
I loved the fact that Capote vs The Swans actually had this clip in tge TV Series. Wow Truman was really suffering and in the depths of his drug and alcohol abuse while filming Murder by Death. He still managed to pull it off well though👏👏👏👏

They wanted someone topical to play the villian but unfortunaltly settled with the horrible acting lack of sense of humor from Capote. The movie was so great even with this horrendous performance
