Hunting down the mafia in Italy | DW Documentary

  • Italian prosecutor Nicola Gratteri is on a mission -- against the mafia. After ordering the arrest of nearly 350 members of the notorious 'Ndrangheta syndicate, along with politicians and officials accused of assisting them, he is now launching Italy’s biggest mafia trial in three decades.
The trial began in mid-January in the town of Lemezia Terme in Calabria, the heartland of the ‘Ndrangheta. The trial specifically targets the Mancuso clan, which has controlled the area of Vibo Valentia for decades and plays a key role in the smuggling of cocaine from South America.
The largest court case of its kind since the Palermo maxi trials in the 1980s, this trial has been years in the making. In 2019, regional chief prosecutor Nicola Gratteri - who has lived under constant police protection for the past 30 years - dealt a major blow to Europe’s most dangerous mafia group, overseeing more than 350 arrests in coordinated raids that shut down businesses and seized dirty money.
Leading witnesses, journalists and the families of the victims are among the many hoping the trial will curtail the power of the fearsome ‘Ndrangheta. We hear from a former member of the group, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of his life. He confirms that arms trafficking, money laundering, extortion and murder are part and parcel of the group’s operations. And those operations are lucrative - worth some 55 billion euros a year. Relatives of the ’Ndrangheta’s victims, like Vincenzo Chindamo, are also following the trial closely. The body of his sister Maria has never been found. Through the testimony of a key witness, the family learned that she was probably murdered by a member of the ’Ndrangheta because she refused to sell her land to the group. Journalist Michele Albanese, who has been reporting on the crimes of the mafia in Calabria for years despite the risk to his life, is also hoping that the trial will be a milestone in the fight against the ’Ndrangheta.

Just one thing, he never persecute bankers or financial societies.... as Falcone and borsellino (they yes, were killed by mafia/state) taught, follow the money and will find the real mafia. A part of them, also chinnici and costa died....why?because they followed the money. Gratteri is good, but he thinks that the real mafia is there in Calabria, among sheepers and builders. He also think that if you smoke a joint, 'the molecules of your brain explode'...

It's really unfortunate what the Mafia has done to the region. My grandfather left Calabria in the early 1970s because the mafia were heavily extorting his business. He has never gone back to visit old family members and doesn't talk about his time there in his early years. I was curious and asked him about it when I was a little boy, but I know it brings pain to him to relive those days so I don't bring it up anymore :(

Yes, it is out of this world. You have to consider that 'Ndrangheta is only one of the biggest mafias in Italy (there is Cosa Nostra, Camorra, Società Foggiana, Sacra Corona Unita, Mafia Zingara of Rome). So if you sum up their revenues all together you have an amount of money that could be comparable to the GDP of some western countries. But if you listen to politicians, mafia seems to be non-existing. It seems to appear only when a civilian gets killed by mistake. But mafia is more dangerous and rich than ever. It is spread all over the world. Many ndrangheta families have members in Canada because it is easier to clean dirty money or in North Europe where they control the biggest ports in Europe like Rotterdam and Antwerp. That's such a shame for Italy, such a beutiful country with beautiful people but with so many problems...

There was another Maxi trial of a similar type (1986-1992) against the Sicilian Mafia: Cosa Nostra. A whole prison to be reconstructed into a courthouse and trial began. All the Mafiosi could easily be controlled and bought into the courtroom as it was within the Prison complex. More than 300 Mafiosi were convicted to over 2000 years in prison.
The two prosecutors who led it Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were assassinated as the duo meticulously and tirelessly tried the Mafiosi and bring them down. The whole event was videographed.
The two prosecutors are hailed as national heroes today.

the mafia has always been a business and military partner of the CIA for decades until the 1990s so.. you know...
the problem is that people abroad have a quite superficial and naive view of what the mafia is... you think it is a local criminal gang killing people here, while it is really an organized business and military arm with trillions of cash at their disposal infiltrated in every political, judiciary, military, masonic and secret service organization around the world, maintaining order on behalf of many nations' secret services. Mafia has done the dirty job of the CIA in several occasions, for instance. This is what mafia is... better to grow up and face the truth. The mafia commands the "special forces", that is the whole point.
Why do you think they have never be caught? because the ones supposed to catch them are colluded and affiliated to them (and take orders from them)

These people and better witness protection programs are just what southern Italy regions need, if nothing changes there, the communities will struggle for many more decades. The worst part, if you want to open a business and provide the community at what you do best, you will still have to pay your shares to the mafia, and if you don't they will make you by threatening, causing fire, destructing property. What Nicola Gratteri is doing is very important for the people.

    • @antoniospano8006

I am from southern Italy, from the Campania region and what you say is not entirely true.
the "mafia" is there but today it won't burn your shops if you don't pay for them, simply because they have other businesses with which they earn a lot more ... I live in a small town of thirteen thousand people and the most dangerous thing that happens is old folks play cards and get angry when they lose.
And so it is in all the towns of southern Italy, only in the big cities is there petty crime, as well as in the rest of the world.

One issue is the existence of tax havens around the world. These should be ended completely. They are not only in small countries like Cyprus, Grand Cayman, etc., but also advanced countries like the US and UK. One reason the price of real estate in cities like New York and London is so high is that money from organized crime or looted from developing countries is used to buy it up. If you show up in a bank to open a bank account in the US with $3,000 in cash, the bank has to report it. If you buy a beachfront property in Palm Beach, a Park Avenue penthouse, or a flat in Kensington, there are essentially no obligations to report the source of the funds used.
