It's amazing to see Allan Vaché at that age. He was slim, indeed :) And already a great player. Always loved Bob Barnard's playing and had the fortune playing concerts with him in Kecskemét, Hungary and also in Belgrade, Serbia (he also sat in once in Germany when I was touring with my band).

Good band, but I feel the pianist should hold back some and let the rhythm group do the rhythm. With his permanent left hand, it gets a littly wobbly.

Mr Jimmienoone: It's funny finding this comment now (years later) because this is exactly the subject I've been researching of late - What should a pianist do in a large vintage jazz band, particularly when the band is stomping along at 200+ bpm? I think the piano should keep it very simple during the main ensembles, avoiding any technique that can spoil the rhythm section's hard work on that rapid 4/4, or that can cloud the harmonies. Sometimes I sync with the banjo/guitar, playing locked hands with 4 "strums" per bar, and sometimes I play wholenote chords, working my way up and down the keyboard. Then there are discrete fills and so on...
I consider stride to be a solo style of piano playing, though it can be modified and incorporated into some band situations. The pianist on this recording is very talented and I wish I could play stride like him, but that is not to say that I would ever play it on something this rapid and with so many musicians.
Does anyone have alternative suggestions for surviving a tune like this on piano? One day I'd like to make a video on the subject.

@@Zoco101 Hi Mike, hear what you're saying, but the pianist (the great John Sheridan, I think) was being given his chance to shine and he surely took it, as did the drummer, I think Ed Torres, who was briliant too. I have heard John many times, and he usually feeds the band, in the manner you suggest, but this time kept a stride style going, in which he excels. The band were all soloing in this performance, so I would refer you to other Cullum performances where you would get a better idea of their more usual ensemble approaches, now, sadly, a thing of the past. Like most other things in life, ther is probably no one single answer, and as a reed player, sometimes you have to put up with piano players of different persuasions and styles just to play a bit of jazz!
