    Early on this summer when I found myself down by Santa Rosa, AZ watching a gorgeous hail core fall on the stunning desert landscape, and then later that day staring at a haboob with a stacked shelf cloud above it near the border of Mexico, I had a feeling it would be a unique monsoon. It's funny how every year is different. That's the beauty of chasing the summer storm season out here in the desert southwest. You never know what's going to happen or what you might see.
    This year I ventured far and wide. Phoenix never saw a good dust storm all summer, but I still was able to capture a few good ones in southwest portions of the state. The cover photo for this film was halfway to Yuma standing in the middle of Interstate 8 watching an ominous wall of dust roll down the highway towards me with lightning flashing behind it. It was an incredible moment.
    One bonus this summer was a few successful chases up at the Grand Canyon. Finally. A couple of gorgeous sunsets, rain dumping into the Canyon, lightning at night, Milky Way...it all worked out and I'm stoked for the footage I captured there that made it into this film. I also ventured over into New Mexico twice to chase some wonderful, plains-like structure to end the monsoon this year.
    All told I covered about 13,000 miles and chased as far west as Desert Center, CA, as far east as Wilna, NM and as far north as Tonelea, AZ. And two great storms down in Organ Pipe National Monument, which is only about 10 miles from Mexico.
    I loved what I saw this year. It felt so unique. I found myself submerged in cacti and desert flora a few times with stunning light and structure. Explored places in New Mexico I hadn't seen before. Smiled at the gasps of amazement from the crowds at the Canyon when a lightning bolt would strike. Finally discovered that the Santa Rosa area is a hotbed for supercell activity. And while it didn't make it on time-lapse, I captured a brief tornado over downtown Phoenix!
    So...the film. So much effort and energy went into it. I shot over 110,000 frames of time-lapse and likely only half of it ended up in the final cut. The editing has taken me weeks and even right up until Monday evening I was still fixing and tweaking. The music is all custom, thanks to the amazing work of Peter Nanasi (PLEASE check out his website and buy his albums: peternanasi.bandcamp.com/) I love how we work together to develop a track that seems to fit exactly with the clips I capture. I am so incredibly blessed that his work crossed my path.
    A quick thank-you to the workshop guests I had this summer. You guys were amazing troopers, staying out to all hours and being around for some awesome storms. In fact, I am not sure that I would have even been on the shelf cloud in the final scene of this film if it hadn't been for my workshop. Thank you, thank you!
    As always though, what made it fun was sharing a lot of it with my kiddos. They made the trip up to the Grand Canyon with me once and it was such a blast of an experience. Asher joined me in New Mexico one day, just he and I, and I got to see his face light up when he captured his first ever lightning strike on video on his little iPad.
    To my wife Jina...we've come a long, long way since we started this storm chasing journey years ago. It's not been easy all the time, especially with me being on the road so much between April and October these days. But we've slowly figured things out and I'm unbelievably grateful to you for your support and belief in what we're doing together.
    To everyone else...thank you for your continued support of my work. I am constantly blown-away at the kindness that you show to me.
    And now...I hope you enjoy this film.
    --------
    Technical Details:
    I used two Canon 5DSR’s along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

    I have always been fascinated and mesmerized by lightning storms. As a kid I would watch for hours out my bedroom window as the storms rolled by, trying to count the number of tines coming out of the forks of lightning.

    From the second i saw you uploaded until the very end of those glorious 8 minutes and 7 seconds I was riddled with chills, every scene every frame every single string or drum rang out in harmony with the sky. Ever since i've found your work, I've been looking for more creators like you. I can say truly that you are the best there is honestly no one with the same set of skill as you and it is astonishing to see your work and experience and your love for the sky so much to where you inspire me greatly, and i've only been taking pictures for 4 years now. But ever since i picked up my Canon Rebel T5 I've always shot the sky, and you've skyrocketed me into pursuing my dream of becoming a professional photographer, Thank you.

    Mike, as a fellow photographer and Phoenix native, this blows my mind. I now live in seattle, where the only interesting weather is the occasional glimpse of the aurora borealis. I got some nice shots from Phoenix this summer, including a well-formed funnel cloud. Your work is truly fantastic, and I watch these all the time when its gloomy and cold, and it drives me close to tears because its so beautiful, and I long to go back even though I visit often. AZ storms are truly insane, rain so intense you sometimes can't see 10 feet in front of you, amazing CG bolts ripping across the sky, thunder so loud it rattles the ground, and winds so fierce and powerful they act almost like a tornado. Thank you for this film, and am already looking forward to seeing what 2018 has to offer, hopefully some more CG.

    00:12 If anyone wonders if these colors, like shades of gold and their morphing into other apparent colors like Peach, Violet, Lavender, Purple are real or applied in editing, they are real. The play of light during storms accomplishes the appearance of many colors ever-changing. I've watched these storms since I was little and I can tell you the appearance of changing colors is real. One wouldn't expect Violet and Purple but during monsoon, they can be seen when the light is right. It's an amazing season! A very powerful, dramatic, amazing season that can remind a person just how small we are.

    • @jasonnehceis3267

      Actually you are wrong. No current format or technology that I know of is capable of capturing the full spectrums, richness of the actual colors seen with the naked eye. No amount of ramping them up in post would do it either. We can get pretty close. 😜

    To date the best/most amzing nature timelapse video on YT, not only amongst the stormlapse videos, but within all nature videos (based on watching about 150-200 hours worth of 1-20 minutes long timelapse footages in the last 3-4 years).
    Perfection in colours, picture quality, view angles, film like lapse timing, and matching the storms' density/power to the different parts/acts feeligs of the music, etc. Outstanding vision, planning and execution in every aspects!
    There are many other great videos, but most of them failing in one of these things (most usually missing the importance of the last one).

    • @bretjennings4335
      @bretjennings4335 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, I apologize, I thought a monsoon was a hurricane in Asia or the Orient, I just looked and I see the definition is a bit broader. Still, incredible work, thank you

    • @MikeOlbinski
      @MikeOlbinski  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, not a ton of supercells in this one, but there were a few! A monsoon is a season shift in winds that brings on a rainy season.

    • @cacatr4495
      @cacatr4495 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Monsoon is not a storm itself, but the shift in winds that brings moisture up from tropical overflow. Southern Arizona, by latitude, is in the subtropics, and the wind-shift funnels moisture up from the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of California and the Pacific, creating conditions that are primed for the resulting rainy season.

      And who knows? A thunderstorm while you are at it!. I've only experienced a thunderstorm storm to the north of me whilst clear skies were overhead

    I got chills at 5:23 . To see the awesome power of nature and these huge storms and the enormous topography of our world only to be reminded of our place in the universe with the sight of our own galaxy sure can make you and all of your problems feel very small and insignificant. Its rare to have such a shocking moment of clarity.
    Your work is mind blowing.

    It is rare there is a video in which *every* frame is a stunning picture. This video goes beyond that.
    Absolutely stunning, and the music, blown away.
