I purchased a new Rega 2,it was very musical.later i purchased a vintage Pioneet PL-12D for a second system i was setting up.I was that impressed with the 12D that i now use it in my main system.Don't play off vintage record players.
Great Review and information , excellent , whats your thoughts of Stylus and Inner Grove Distortion ? I have a P2 with the P3 tonearm and a ND5 and its reduced but not totally and recommendations to avoid IGD
Thanks for the kind feedback. As for the igd I have had the Rega carbon, and Ortofon 2m Red, Blue, Bronze and I now use the LVB 250. I’ve used Nd3 and some Sumiko carts. I haven’t experienced igd, on my carts or turntables. I like to get everything setup just right. Tracking, making sure my turntable is level. Cart is aligned and my power transformer to the turntable and phono preamp is connected to power bank that cleans the incoming power. Grounding can sometimes be a real annoyance . If you have heaps of cables and power cables at the back your HiFi unit. It may - may not - may create static at the back of your unit. Maybe check the track force to your cart. This happened to me, take or leave it. I had slight buzz. I checked the cart, checked the grounding. I cleaned the stylus, in the end it was the rca cables. Replaced them and good to go! I know cables - who would think. But the cables I replaced them with were no more than $100 AUD - they weren’t $500 or $1000 rca’s That’s a nice turntable you have there!
@@concordhifi yeah I do the same I have a tracking meter and it’s only on same records that I notice that the final track The quality is not quite a good as the rest of the album if that makes sense
I’ve had my P2 for 4 years and now it has a humming sound. I’m going to be taking it to the retailer I got it from and hope they can help with this issue.
Hi great review and p2 great deck, I had rp2 years ago, but have p3 but the elyis2 but as it come to end I do get hum, and on the forums this is the case , I have a spare om5 and put that on and hum was much reduced and such a level can’t hear it , am hoping the rd 3 don’t have this issue. Regards mark
@@concordhifi between you and me haha - I watched this video to try to get over my `non-love` for Rega TTs.. Can´t really put my finger on it, but I Just can´t fall in love with them. Been spinning on a ca. 1985 Bang&Olufsen RX2 for nye 35 years now and have Loved almost every minute of it. It is a sub-chassis design and I love it. I´ve fallen in love with Thorens´ TD1500 with an MC cart in order to use xlr cables to a Pro-Ject phono-amp.. My local dealer said - Get a P8.. Your thoughts ? ps pls excuse the novel :D
Hey all good - HiFi/sound is subjective. Thorens is something I’d like to review, I’d like to get in contact with the distributor and see if they will lend me turntable to give my thoughts on. As for the P8, I’ve heard the P6 and one thing I do like about the Rega, I do like the tone arms. They’re really nicely crafted. I want to be honest and say I haven’t heard the P8. If you’re spending that much though, I encourage you to go see one and listen to one.
I bought a P2 in January and had my stylus upgraded to an AT-VM540ML. When it came time to upgrade the cart, I'd probably consider the nd5 or nd7. Which is the closest to the performance of the AT? would I do better to go for an Ortofon black standard or LVB? I also use the fono MM mk5 Preamp.
That’s a decent setup with the VM540. If you’re thinking of going to the Nd7 or LVB 250 stylus/cart. If you’re thinking of spending that amount, maybe thinking of a new turntable maybe? Like the Rega P3 50th anniversary that comes with the exact mm cart. Don’t get me wrong going to nd7 or LVB on the P2, you’ll notice a slight difference. If you’re spending $$ on going to a decent mm cart, you want the other components on your turntable to compliment the cart/stylus also. I run Ortofon 2M Blue with my Rega MK5 Fono and it’s an awesome combo and was nice with the Nd3. Sound is subjective and maybe go to a HiFi shop and have a listen. Just so you’re happy with your purchase. Nice setup you have with the MK5, P2 with a VM540ML - enjoy
@@concordhifi Thanks for the response. I think I'll enjoy the combo for a while. My old TT (before it died) was a Technics SL-5 (linear tracking). I don't remember what cart I had on it, but it was pretty old and almost certainly not premium. If I upgrade I might go for something like the 6. I just saw on their website that the shop I bought my setup from is now a Magnapan dealer...might just go check them out for the heck of it! I've never heard that type of speaker before.
It’s a neat classy looking player. Thanks for the review.

The P2 is great deal and such a beautiful deck. Enjoy!

did you ever experience any play in the suspension of the tone arm at the pivot?
Hi, no I did not experience that. I have a Music Hall turntable as well and haven’t experienced that on that turntable.
Does the P2 not have 3 bolt mount on the tonearm ?
I was just baffeled that you had to align the nd5.
It does have a three bolt mount, however…..can’t remember I had to go with two. Hence the alignment.

cork mat? Rega advises against it.. what do you hear it gives?
Personal preference I guess, felt/cloth mat leave lint and dust on your records. I find a cloth mat acts like a dust catcher
