    want to thank you so much for this video. It feels almost like a holy experience. Not in a religious sense but the rich greenness of the forested mountains, the clouds as they move, the rain as it falls nurturing the life in the woods, the interconnectedness of all life in the forest, the rightness of it all and the beauty of the music you choose that just accentuates this feeling. It is a previledge to watch you work doing what you love with such thoughtfulness, planning, preparation and precision.

    Serious question. On the PMDG MD11, you can take off, fully loaded, and when I choose PROF, I'm getting initial climb rates of around 4,300 fpm. Is that even close to accurate? Follow up, I like using VS on the climb out, until I'm reasonably sure I've got most of any manuvering out of the way. When you climb out manually, generally speaking, what sort of climb rate do you like? Thanks a million!

    • @FatherTime1958
      @FatherTime1958  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately, I last flew the MD-11 in 1996! However, 4,300 fpm is way too high. If you are fully loaded it is still a beast at low altitude, but it would be more like 2,500 fpm. As I recall, unlike the Boeings, we flew a lot of V/S. The Profile and even the level change were sloppy. When using V/S you vary the V/S to get the airspeed that is desired. Definitely NOT the Boeing way. They strongly discourage V/S because you have no speed protection. I know that we used V/S for all climbs and descents 2,000 feet or less, because the autopilot was too sloppy in profile. We used 1,000 fpm in climbs of 2,000' or less. Sorry that I can't remember more.

    • @srmj71
      @srmj71 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FatherTime1958 yeah, i figured being Titanic heavy, climb rates of 4,300... was... maybe if you had those military, rocket packs they strap on the galaxies. I learned to keep adjusting the fpm to keep my airspeed up where I needed it. Like I said in my question, I use V/S on the climb out, watching my airspeed. At 2,500 fpm or there about, it's not too hard to maintain a speed of 240 up to FL100. After that, it really depends on the weight and what the weather is doing, as to what gets used going forward. Thanks so much for answering my questions. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I read everything I can get my hands on, but until you talk to someone that's actually done it... it's guesswork.

    Nice video! I do have a question regarding the selected speed in the speed window on preflight. You mentioned that, contrary to other planes, you put 250 knots in the flight control panel and not the V2 speed. Why is that? And you also put 250 in when you would have a speed restriction of say 220 knots at a certain waypoint on initial climb? Thanks a lot!

      Thank you for taking the time to comment! It’s been a long time since I made that video. I’m on the TFDi Quality Assurance team, so I’ve been doing a lot of MD-11 since the Sky Simulations video. If you take off in PROF mode, the airplane will obey the takeoff profile including the climb power and V2 until the programmed clean-up altitude. After clean-up it will go to the programmed FMS climb speed of 250 below 10,000 and also obey/respect all altitude and speed restrictions on the SID provided you have selected FMS speed on the GCP. At this juncture all PFD flight mode annunciations will be in magenta. However, you could put V2 in the GCP for takeoff and at 800 feet go speed select 250 (or the lower crossing speeds) and FL CHG. Once cleaned up you could then select PROF. In other words, there are a few ways to do it. I’ll have dozens of MD-11 videos when the TFDI MD-11 is released. Thank you again!

    Hello Sir,
    I'm an actual MD-11 Pilot, flying that airplane for about 14 years around the planet. I have couple of question concerning that new sim.
    How close that sim is from the real airplane such as the automations, FMC, systems, etc... ?
    Also in the FMS, is the "DEFINE NEW WAYPOINTS" working. From that page, can we create a runway that is not in the data base, by typing for instance RW18L, and that should ask the coordinates to enter, the brg, the length and the elevation?
    I used to play with PMDG, and I was satisfied enough with the product to practice different scenarios. I liked how we could display different panels on the screen such as the ND, FD, and having the entire AFS panel display where ever you were seating (CA or FO). On the same screen, we could also have the FMC displayed. Unfortunately the PMDG keep crashing and they don't support the product anymore.
    I thank you in advance for your answer, and for sure that airplane is a wonderful airplane to fly, I really love her, and thank you for your video.

    Hi there, nice to hear from the views of someone who actually flew the MD-11! I am also in the BDL area.
    I love that aircraft and am developing a simulation of my own in my spare time. In all honesty the Skysim is disappointing. Lots of mistakes and inaccuracies compared to the real plane.
    For example, just turning the battery power on does not power anything except the DC Bat Bus. So, no displays or such in the cockpit should come on. You have to turn Emergency Power on to supply power to the left emergency AC/DC buses which will give you your PFD, EAD, and a few other things.
    And you were right about the QNH selector... the QFE knob is not for setting inHG/HPA... don't know why they thought otherwise given that the toggle button is right above!
    And the autoflight modes are a proper mess especially the takeoff modes.
    If I can get that stuff right as a hobby developer, a company selling a product definitely should be able to. The TFDI will be much better, as good or better than the excellent PMDG MD-11!

      I thank you for the excellent input. The TFDI MD-11 can’t get to MSFS fat enough for me. The problem. I have with the Sky Simulation MD-11 was the price. It was priced like a study level plane and it definitely is not. I did really enjoy getting reacquainted with the MD-11 cockpit. I haven’t flown it since 1995 or so. I did have 2000 hours in the beast, and I loved the airplane. However, it did betray me on a couple odd occasions. Scared me is more accurate. Anyway, bring on the TFDI version.

    Okay, so, as this plane is obviously a ripoff at $70 and I was dying to have a piece of the MD-11, I did something that I NEVER do, and “borrowed” a copy. Currently on a test flight.
    My impression, honestly, it’s not that bad. The bugs are bugs that one would encounter with any unrefined add-on, and it’s a shame that SkySim still haven’t worked the bugs out and/or lowered the price, because this plane in good working order would absolutely kill it at the $20-40 price point. It’s fun. It looks nice. I haven’t tried Profile mode, but it hand-flies nicely, and the auto pilot seems to work fine (no worse than the ini A300 did initially), so who needs it?
    It’s a great tide-me-over until the TfDi is released, and if they would just lower the price and work out the kinks, would be a great option for an MD enthusiast on a budget. My .02!
    Also, it seems to have two flight plans going on during transition, as in it’s following something different than what is in the FMS.. I’ve had to go ‘direct’ a couple of times to get it back on track!

    This is worse than a free plane in XP-12. The XP-12 Rotate MD-11 auto flight acts just as it should.

    Are you supposed to set the altitude as a limiter and then go to vertical speed and set the rate there? When plane reaches altitude, autopilot holds it.

    • @FatherTime1958
      @FatherTime1958  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, in vertical speed, the autopilot will give priority to the selected rate and, if it can, it will also hold the selected airspeed. The problem with vertical speed comes with the fact that if you are directed to hold an airspeed, it will only do it if it can also hold the priority of vertical speed. Ex. You want to climb to FL310 in vertical speed, and you select 2000 fpm up. The aircraft will give you the vertical rate and your airspeed will bleed off rapidly. Another example would be a descent to 6000 feet at 2000 fpm in vertical speed. The aircraft, without speed brakes, can only do about 1200 fpm down and still hold 250 knots. And, yes, the aircraft will level at the altitude in the window. Conversely, flight level change gives priority to the selected airspeed and will descend at idle power while holding that airspeed u til reaching the selected altitude. In the climb it will hold that airspeed and climb at the maximum vertical speed that it can achieve at climb power while giving priority to the airspeed, not the vertical speed.

      The Sky Simulations MD-11 has baffled me at times. For a while I was doing wheelies on takeoff. I’m afraid that I don’t remember much about it. However, I have become extremely proficient on the TFDI MD-11 as a test pilot for their Quality Assurance team. That will be a fantastic airplane when it is fully released,

    You may very well be a dweeb. You are however, in good company. Being a dweeb is a requirement to really enjoy "flight simming", as it were. I haven't tried these new incarnations of the awesome MD11. I keep my old FSX, SP2 installation around, kept up two date of course. The PMDG MD11 is (in my estimation), is just about as "study level", as it gets.

      Thank you for coming to my defense, however, @stmj71 was quoting me. I called myself a “dweeb” during the video when I became so excited about flight simulation. I am still very new to the sim world (1 year) and I am loving it so much. It is so challenging and rewarding to study, learn and teach multiple aircraft, and the community is so supportive, including you. Thank you again.

    Hi, I'm not a pilot, first of all, only of the armchair variety that is! I've been away from Flight Simulator for a while, but still use FSX, old computer which won't run MSFS etc..............However my favourite most used commercial jet has always been the PMDG MD-11 long since discontinued by them............The cockpit textures were a bit dated but the systems and displays were great, and apparently very accurate. Have you ever come across this version of the MD-11 in the past? I thought your tip on keeping the speed tape on the centre line to line up with was great, I've not heard that one before. I really enjoyed watching the video, it's obvious listening to your commentry that your an experienced pilot, so thank you for sharing. Going to see what else you have done now, thanks alot and all the best Dave.

      Hi Dave. Evidently, TFDi is in the final stages of a “study” level MD-11. I tried to be on their Beta team, but I was too late. Looking at a summer release. PMDG is in the later stages of a 777 “study” level product. I can’t wait. Thank you for your post. Please feel free to comment any time.

      @@FatherTime1958 Thanks for the reply Father Time. PMDG MD-11 was so far back I bought it on a disc! I have alot of their stuff for FSX it was always very good "study level" products. I checked their site the other day and they only do P3D and MSFS now................I must be the only one still using FSX, but it works well on my old PC, so I'll stick with it. I heard about the Tfdi MD 11, but then all the flight sim world seemed to dissolve when the new MSFS came along. I have their earlier product the B717 which is like a baby 2 engine MD11, same cockpit etc, it is very good, but not as frame rate friendly as my MD-11.

      i miss the pmdg md11 so much. i still have the pmdg md11 physical manuals and looking forward to find out how they will hold against the TFDi md 11. i wonder why pmdg stopped offering the manuals for their products. maybe they were just way too expensive and the demand was not so high. still they are my favourite books in my library :)

    • @FatherTime1958

      @@littleaxe9854 I loved the real MD-11. I'm too new to the simulator world to have flown th PMDG MD-11, but I can't wait for the TMDi version. I actually tried to get into their BETA program, but it had already been fully staffed. Regarding the PMDG manuals, I do believe that it is a liability issue. You can still find them out there floating in cyber space, but PMDG seems to have met some resistance. They were probably too good, too close to the real deal.
