RMS Queen Mary deserves respect and got it.
    SS United States also does.
Will its namesake honour that situation?
As last resort I can only hope that the US Government will act as it should.
This vessel is way more than an ordinary ship.
She was the workbench for modern hydrodinamics and powerplant technology.
No vessel has been faster than her yet...
I mean no real ship, 300 meters long and 60.000 metric tons ship.
Should be a matter of NATIONAL PRIDE!
Forgive me please if my bad English is not good enough to express my concern.
    Greetings from Brazil.

@@rcpsammy7186 Yes, I hear you but remember, the I think QM didn't have to be completely stripped of asbestos. The Big U is stripped of asbestos, so, an investor is starting from the ground up, at least. At it's most basic level, it floating real estate. I'm quite sure hotel accom in New York isn't cheap. But remember, this is from the nation that doesn't have high speed trains even though it would be better for them. A cruise line wanted to pay to make her operational. But she can't pass current safety and technical standards or be made to do so. The cruise line paid to support her preservation for a while. But I think that has stopped. This ship holds the trans-Atlantic crossing in the shortest period of time. I think that It could and should be converted into a hotel as other ships have been.

tow it to caribbean & tie it & anchor it in a storm safe bay. Paying one person a salary to keep the bilge’s dry would be not even comparable to the cost of where it’s docked. As far as tow fee, would probably cost 6 months of what they’ve been paying in rent.

True, but she doesn't have her former glory. Her interior fitting of oak, marble, fine rugs and brass are all gone.
After World War II ended, commercial air transport took off, and spelled and end for ocean transport (as well as trains).
Repurposing her would be impractical due to maintaince costs.
There's really no future for the ship.
By sinking instead of scrapping her, she at least will have a final mission: to become part of an underwater reef, attract all sorts of marine life, and become an exciting SCUBA diving destination (thus benefiting the local seaside economy such as hotels, restaurants, diving shops, etc.).

Yet she has been kept in quite decent condition and continues to be used while The Big U is pushed aside, abandoned, and condemned? In a way, she has been a perfect representation of the decline of her country. All the way from the Golden Age to current times. She's like an omen...a foreshadowing of the ever declining and eventual fall of the US empire. 😢

Second, this ship is of private enterprise. The greatest country on earth didn’t allow this to happen. Her demise is due to aircraft replacing ocean liners in the trans Atlantic route.

I certainly hope she is restored, but making the ship into an artifcial reef wkuld be better than seeing it scrapped. It's been abandoned and derelect for so long, I dont know if it's able to be restored anymore, if so, it should he done soon. I don't imagine it can last much long just sitting there. While being sunk as a reef would be better than being cut-up for scrap, It’s still the lesser of two evils. There’s a pro & a con to her sinking:
Pro- She would still be in one piece, albeit sunk..
Con- Depending on where she would come to rest, Skilled divers would be required (And not everyone in the world is that skilled..)
If you want my honest opinion, The decision of museum preservation should’ve been made in the early 1980s once the U.S. Navy declassified her. Her interior auctions in 1984 pretty much robbed her of that second life. Queen Mary was the more lucky because she was bought outright by Long Beach before being decommissioned. If the same notion had occurred with the United States then she would’ve already been preserved & her story would also be well known..like QM.

Sinking her would be a terrible idea in my opinion. Not only we would lose a historic landmark, but it would also be wasted potential for an iconic vessel. If someone purchases it and puts the time and money necessary to restore to its former glory. Think of the possibilities for this vessel if its restored.
Idea 1: Museum Ship and Hotel similar to what they did with the RMS Queen Mary.
Idea 2: Use it for office space.
Idea 3: just convert the vessel into a five-star floating hotel like what that one company out in Thailand was originally going to do for its sister ship the SS America.
Idea 4: restore the vessel into working order and use it for heritage voyages. Or maybe use it as a university at sea.
    Idea 5: A floating casino.

I do not like how ships are sunk to make artificial reefs. They place and denote charges that result the in the ships bottom falling out and it just falls quickly under the surface. Very under whelming. If they place a single charge up by the bow, we might get longer dramatic sinking with the stern sticking out. But the demolition crew don't care about dramatic effect or making art, they just want to get the job done quickly.

@@christiandpaul2022 The S.S. United States was built by Cunard Lines with secret design and financial assistance from the U.S. Navy. Publicly, she was built as an ocean liner which would be the only service she ever provided. Secretly, she was built for use as a troop ship should the need arise. That is why she has an extra thick and extra strong hull and an all metal construction. She has two engine rooms, one fore and one aft, and water tight bulkheads extending from the keep to the top decks. No wood was used in her construction, in fact the only wood allowed on the ship was one grand piano which to be proven could not burn, and the butcher blocks used in the kitchens. She was stripped some time after being removed from service, because asbestos was used throughout the ship in construction. She was towed to Turkey for the stripping process, then towed back. Well first off I am sure they plan on sinking her upright the way they did the Oriskany
it would make for a much better and safer wreck dive
It would be pretty easy to do considering it is a 1000 feet long and the water it will be sunk in will be less than 200 feet , you could flood the stern enough to get it to settle on the bottom with at least half of the ship still above the surface . Once o the bottom then you just slowly pump water into the bow, just enough to get it to slowly sink
I suspect they will remove the funnels and mast so that it can be sunk in shallow enough water so that the upper superstructure (the white part) will be within 30 to 100 feet of the surface. well within the limits of your average PADI AOW diver on regular air

This is such a sad video to watch. Why is this ship so important?? It was only the most technologically advanced, and fastest ocean liner in the world! It was the very best that could be designed at the time, and truly is a 'timeless' design that could be refit and refurbished to serve us today. Here's a really good idea: why not allow each state to 'buy in' for fractural ownership of this iconic ship, then restore and refit it for use to help house some of the veterans from each state that are either homeless, or just need temporary assistance. The ship could also serve as a floating VA hospital ship, and serve the east coast helping veterans at each port of call that are scheduled for the specialized care that can be provided. This historic ship is as long as the Chrysler building is tall, so there would be plenty of room to house both a fully staffed modern medical center, and a place for veterans in need. Some of the veterans might need rehabilitation, recovery from mental stress and disorder, or might just use the ship to relocate to another part of the US to another state's port of call. Either way, this fine ship would still be with us, restored, commissioned, and be put to good use for the American people. Such a plan makes good sense, as the structure itself would not have to be built. The ship itself is available already, it only requires funding for insightful renovation and people with enough imagination and determination to make it all possible. PJM

They missed their chance when casino gambling came to Pennsylvania. If the association or other casino company had got a license for the ship it may have been possible to afford to upgrade the ship to a hotel-casino project. With the condition the ship is in now it would not be an easy thing to just make it a floating hotel. The association is having a hard time just getting the funding to move the ship to a new berth. Especially with today’s high interest to finance projects it makes it even harder to justify rebuilding the ship to just become a floating hotel. Not to mention it would have to move from where it is to a reasonable area with good tourism and possible convention business. So while I hate to see such a historic ship be lost, it most likely would be best to tow it out to see and sink it as a reef. At least that way divers could still visit the historic ship and it would provide a place for fish to prosper.
