I went into the Blackwell house in the time it was empty. It was amazing. The video says that she was very careful to get the views right, well, she had a window pointing at every one of the best views. There is a rock knob on the property that's near the road, she positioned the house to use it to screen the house to give it privacy. She even put an outdoor shower and hot tub on that side because it was so concealed there. I drank in all the particular details inside that she had invented just for that project. They were all quite clever in how attractive they were, but also how functional, and easily built. If you have never designed and built anything in your life, you can't appreciate how hard it is to do all three of those things. Creating a design that is attractive, functional, and easy to build, is a homerun.
I liked the exterior too. It was simple and straightforward, but not a box.
There is no doubt that the house was thought to be ugly by many people in town. I'm sure that it would not have been hated if it had been stuccoed, and painted tan. Really. That's how stupid people are. They don't see, even with their eyes wide open, they don't see. But the thing about that house was that it wasn't anybody's business, but they complained and complained about it. There was no legal restriction on that land regarding the looks of a house built on it, but many people thought there should have been because it was the last thing before Gates Pass. The county behaved extremely badly and it's a stinking shame that people like that ever get any power.
If I had a time machine I'd go back to when they built that house and I'd tell Mr. Blackwell to spend the extra money, and install galvanized steel water pipe all the way from the well to the house because years later the PVC pipe failed. That's how they got him. The county refused to give him a permit to replace the water line. I don't know what legal basis they had to turn it down, but they did, so the house was without a water supply, and the building code says a house has to have a water supply, or it can't be occupied. There are houses in Pima county without water, and people live in them, but they wanted to tear that house down, so that was the means they used to do it.

The memory of Judith will forever be held close to my heart. I don’t know how I was fortunate to find myself pulled within her orbit...it was not one that came easy to either faculty or student. She possessed a fiery and yet, gentle temperament that made me admire the hell out of her. Those moments of friendship and mentorship will always make me smile...and yes, grin when I think of our relationship.

Now the Ramada House sold to Woody Jackson. The same woody that makes up the sound tracks for Sony/Play Station. GTA3-4-5-6/ Red Dead and much more. The house is a Flipping Studio With Crap laying all over! SAD!
