  • A good look at my train rail bike design alterations after the Richard Bentley design plans. I took his engineering concepts and built my bike using metal parts instead of hardwood.

    Had a look at some tracks nearby, and noticed the inner rail is basically inline with each end of track at the joint. However the outside rail at the joint can be as much as 3/4" out and that means any wheel on the outside would be hitting the joint unless you have adequate space to allow for said discrepancies. I am currently building my own but only a guide wheel on the inside of the tracks . I have to travel 89 miles to get to abandoned tracks .

      Arguing With Stupid People if one was to add a set of "over the track" head phones to the bike, then you could hear the train a coming rollin round the bend.

    I am a cyclist Who also uses railroad tracks as single track, I find this concept intriguing🤔❗️
    Thought I would add, with a high dollar bike and a little tweaking on those parts, you just may have something there🚴🏽‍♂️💨
    I would like to see a company take this and run with it, I would buy one💥

    I just sketched out a design that I may try and execute on. Basing it on the Rad Power Radrunner e-bike. It's built like a tank, and uses fat tires. Lots of highly reinforced hard-points all over it.

    Turns out Vancouver island has the E&N railway that has sat forlorn for 7 years and trains will not be running on the tracks. Goes at 1-2% grades and goes a long way. Now I would like to adapt something to put a recumbent on those tracks and have a real vacation.

    now to make a really cool video would be to hoock a long rope on a passing train and let it tow a trail bike but five times the speed is it too much to handle , speed wobble, could it be designed for it , maybe rubber in rope for easy start , risk of stepping into rope loop , helmet , armour , ejection seat, parachute , airbags for falling to side, paddings or air filled , even a safety cage or shell, but detachable from bike. how about a giant ball rolling o the tracks , pulled by train. ball of branches or plastic or rods pipes. and guy inside. or like could use an old car pulled behind w normal wheels on side of trracks or no rubber and iron wheels on track , but rubber coating inside them. or rope and parachute fly benind train.

      There really isn't any point of doing that, at least not compared to a standard e-bike. There is not much rolling resistance with a bicycle. That is why it is so easy to ride fairly slowly, but impossible to go faster and maintain that speed. Basically, the wind resistance goes up exponentially with speed. Most people can easily maintain 15-18mph and cannot maintain 30-35mph. It's not double, it's like 6 times the amount of energy. Going on a train track doesn't help.

  • @MrDegsy69
    @MrDegsy69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about two bicycles braced together by cross beams like a social cycle? It seems like that outrigger is adding some rolling resistance. Additionaly two riders are going to have some tandem like advantages.

    Where's the engine? I think your outriggers should meet at a much lower point. Your front bicycle wheel should be on the rail as those little ones which should be further ahead to stop speed wobble are taking a beating. None of these contraptions seem to have a rear view mirror. Overly complicated to me.

    • @brucewmclaughlin9072
      @brucewmclaughlin9072 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It looked like the little wheels on the left rail were steering off the track. There's nothing to keep it steady along the track. Why not put those skateboard wheel things on all THREE sides, instead of just the front wheel? That would make them all secure on the tracks.

    Interesting design. I have put in quite a few miles in on railbikes, and i noticed you are running on nice shiny, well maintained track. It's pretty obvious that it is track that is "live", that is, used by trains. I hope you are running with permission, or at least you are aware of any scheduled traffic on this line. Remember that railroads do schedule specials from time to time, so don't take anything for granted. Friends of mine have had to bail off and hide the bike in the bushes. Trains will run 4 or 5 times as fast as you were going, and they can be upon you in a surprising, and possibly fatal, hurry. Think about that when you are out on a trestle or bridge or in a tunnel. Maybe I am an alarmist, but I really don't want to see anyone injured or killed, giving rail bikers a bad rep.

      Hello fellow rail biker. This was designed after Dick Bently's plans. Thank you for your concern. Yes this is a used spur with very light use for factory delivery of goods. This day was on a major holiday shutdown. My first test run. I have been on many miles of track sense. Most abondoned some occasionally used. I do a lot of research prior to using them. Fortunately I have never seen nor run across a live train and hope to never do so. My wife and children would hate to hear of a mishap. It would ruin their day, (mine too). Like all rail bikers permission is not usally available, but with 70 thousand miles of abondoned track in the U.S. we can all find places to safely ride without trespassing. Take care and see you on the rails someday.

      +ImMr1337 I have com off the track a few times usally crossing roads. That is where I use the lift meconism. Sometimes at where the track switching takes place. I have to lift the guide because the skate board wheels will be too fat at that point. Over all it stays on well. One of my rides was 42 miles. I'm planning on adding a bicycle motor some day. Thanks for the compliment. my design here was after Dick Bentley's design and plans. He used hardwood and I used old junk pieces from a bottling plant to make this out of metal instead of wood. I've used it many times and it works well for me but it is not user friendly for others. I found another design that I will like to obtain or build that seems much simpler and easier to use. It is the one that you'll find on youtube where the front wheel sets in the track or guide and it has one outrigger that comes off the seat post which seems to be the least complicated and one of the most effective track guides. Great riding to you.

    looked like that front end was shimmying a little bit. might have been enough for a derailment

    I tried it and met a rail-bike traveling in the opposite direction. It's just not worth the hassle...

    Nice build, nice video, and good speed. All railbike designs work on straight track though. Have you tested the bike on a super elevated curve yet?

      Thank you for the comnent. In fact, I Just came off an elevated curve when I made this video. It worked well at higher speeds too. My only concern was the condition of the track. It had sharp edges on the outer edge of the lower track side. I thought would cut the wheel. But, all went on fine. I will carry an extra wheel from now on. Next trip will be about 60 miles.

      What part of the country are you in Gary? I am in the North East. We have places we can railbike in Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New York! Private message me and I can give you more specifics if you like.
