  • Have you played a more visually stunning par-three than the seventh hole on The Old Course at The National Golf Club?
With a panoramic view of Bass Strait and Gunnamatta Beach beyond, the hole truly has to be seen to be believed.

The next tee shot is a beaut, as well.
Despite being highly ranked in Aus already, I actually think the National Old is underrated! The only complaint I ever hear is how challenging it is, but that's what golf is all about. There is not one bad hole on this golf course. There a par-3 earlier in the round, I think the 3rd or 4th, which is just as awesome. Elevated tee and over water. The whole routing meanders through the brush and each hole makes you think off of the tee, leaves the player with plenty of options, and has very interesting contours on each green.
This course needs a full fly-over by Under the Card!
The Moonah (not to be confused with Moonah Links) is also spectacular, but perhaps for other reasons. It is not as picturesque and doesn't have the same elevation changes, dog-legging and lay-out variety (all in my opinion, of course). That is usually rated higher but I couldn't justify not having the Old rated just the same (or maybe better)!
I haven't played the new Gunnamatta yet, sadly, but have heard good things!
Can we just acknowledge that combing these courses with the facility, a bar / restaurant looking over the property and very spacious practice areas, would be up there amongst the world's best!
All I can say is that I'm over here in WA wanting to recreate 'The National' down in Margaret River! Does any one have a spare few hundred million $?

I have to agree that The Old Course is often underrated against The National’s Moonah and Gunnamatta courses. In terms of ‘fun’, there aren’t many courses more exciting to play than The Old Course. Yes, the short downhill 4th is a stunning par-3… it just doesn’t have the ocean backdrop of the 7th!! There are many forced carries off the tee on The Old Course which makes it a scary proposition for most golfers. The enormous double green on the 10th and 14th holes is also a brilliant feature of the course.
