- The Predatory Sequence of the domestic dog is a chain of behaviours made up of individually complete behaviours. Each behaviour in the chain is known as a ‘discrete motor pattern' which means each is a standalone behaviour, in and of itself. During a complete hunting sequence, while the motor patterns are not reflexive as they are subject to sensory feedback from the environment, each behaviour triggers the next behaviour in the sequence to create this chain of behaviours that make up the entire hunting pattern.
In sum, this sequence is considered their hunting behaviour and the complete sequence is shown here as:
Seek-Orient-Eye-Stalk-Chase-Grab bite-Possess-Kill bite-Dissect-Consume
This video shows either a trained replication using gun dog training dummies, or an example of a naturally expressed behaviour, to demonstrate examples of the first 7 individual motor patterns of the predatory sequence.
Further Information:
Selective breeding has meant that many dogs today have a partial sequence developed for specific jobs. The Collie is a good example as they have an exaggerated Eye-Stalk-Chase sequence: their job to Eye the sheep at close quarters has become part of their control behaviour and so the very best at their jobs will hold their ground and stare at their target to express their bold intent and keep control even in the face of challenging livestock, Stalk-Chase has developed as their speciality herding behaviour to move livestock around in a controlled way.
