- Supertall skyscrapers are becoming increasingly common in North America. They are defined as structures that exceed 300 meters in height. Some are currently being planned that would become the tallest buildings in cities including Miami, Toronto and Austin. In today’s video let’s take a look at six of the best upcoming skyscrapers in North American cities, outside of New York.

As a person from the Pacific NW, I really hope ODA's classy Seattle Tower gets the go ahead SOON to be built! What a fantastic concept & a signature addition to a wonderful skyline!!

Yeah. It says "America's" as in the US in the title, but then goes on to list two canadian skyscrapers.
The inconsistency.
Mexico is central America, like cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, etc. North America is only USA, Groenland, Canada and Alaska, nothing else.

Tribune Tower East in Chicago should be number one. It's the tallest and it's not on his list. This guy has no idea what he's talking about, and insists on putting his ignorance on full display.
Not being funny but the Waldorf Astoria looks like a toddlers building block tower
My favorite skyscraper was the ones being built in Chicago. I grew up there and loved seeing the changing skyline over 50 years.
The Seattle Tower looks very nice but I wish Atlanta would some how feel in the gaps between downtown and mid-town so it can look like a complete skyline instead of two
It blows my mind when they need to shorten a skyscraper because of feed back from residents and city officials. If you do not like tall buildings, why do you live in Chicago?
2 Canadian towers made it on a list

Anyone from Chicago knows how difficult it is to build one of these mega tall structures as we had a couple of high profile failures. The most recent being the beautifully designed 'Chicago Spire" which looked liked a sure thing and got everyone n the city excited but failed to get the financing.
That had to do with the coronavirus pandemic and the world practically shutting down at that time. Now they're about to build two gigantic buildings there. Yes, they are both shorter than the Chicago Spire that was going to go there. But if you think about it like this, the combined height of the two new towers is almost as tall as the one Spire they were going to build, so they still will be generating about the same amount of commerce.
@@GreenLine4444 What? the spire was canceled due to the financial crisis back in '08. More than a decade before Covid....also I'm not sure what you mean about generating commerce. Height of a building is not a factor in how much revenue a building might generate.
@@claybaybay519 OK, yes, it was canceled when the world went through that entire real estate fiasco from 2008 - 2013, not sure how you don't remember that event. And a building's height does play a part in how much revenue the building can generate. If you saw a 3 story commercial / office building, for instance, chances are it is generating less revenue than a 50 story commercial / office building.
The tallest tower South of New York City is The Comcast Technology Center in Philadelphia, with a height of 1,121 feet, and it will still hold that title after Miami's Waldorf Astoria is built, as TWA will only be 1,000 feet, give or take a few feet. The Comcast tower is also the tallest building in the US outside of NYC or Chicago.
Meanwhile Manhattan is having a fight just in their city. Empire state building, One World trade centre, 220 Central park south, One57, 53W53rd, Hudson 50, Vanderbilt, 432ParkAvenue, 111W57th, and Nordstrom tower.
Exactly, both Philadelphia and Chicago sit south of New York City and there are buildings in those cities (especially Chicago) that are taller than the proposed Waldorf Astoria Miami. How does he start a project such as making this video, but does not do research...

#3 - Seattle Tower. I doubt it will be a supertall.
The notable black building in the same pics, known as the Columbia Tower, was built in the 80s and was meant to be a supertall. It would have been one of the first supertalls ever. But TPTB, especially those at Port of Seattle, claimed the height would get in the way of planes taking off and landing at Sea-Tac Airport.
The same thing happened when the recently built Rainier Square Tower, which stands at 850 feet as Seattle's 2nd tallest, was originally going to be a supertall, but again, TPTB argued that height would get in the way of planes for Sea-Tac.
I like how right from the start he highlighted some "majestic" supertall skyscrapers, yet only mentioned those in New York City: Empire State Building, Trump tower, and Chrysler Building. Always great to see when Chicago (the original home of the skyscraper) gets ignored.

Chicago is only the original home of the skyscraper in terms of the first skyscraper "The Renaissance building" in 18--something, I think 1887. After that, Manhattan had already taken the record with "The Tower" in 1888-1889, same time as the Paris Exhibition.
Besides, Churches had already exceeded the height of the worlds first skyscraper in Chicago by a considerable amount. Renaissance building was very modern though, so it was a new branch of what skyscraper meant.
By 1900, Manhattan already had 30 more skyscrapers than Chicago, and by 1920 it was densely packed enough that you couldn't compare the two. Newspaper Row was known for their tall skyscrapers in the late 1800s into 1900s.
@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar He's not speaking on how many tall buildings New York built later. New York has a larger population than Chicago so it should of had more taller buildings. He said Chicago was the original home of the skyscraper, and that would be correct. And many would agree that Chicago's huge skyline looks better than New York's.
You forgot Detroit. There's a skyscraper going up on Woodward Ave where Hudsons dept store once stood. It's suppose to be done by 2025.
I'm surprised you brought that up I haven't heard too much about the new skyscraper in Detroit and I used to go over there and visit when I went to go see my family when I was back home in Grand Rapids but now I'm living down here in Charlotte and they kind of doing the same thing here now
It's not even the tallest in Detroit, although it's nice to have.
That's Hudson site. The building isn't tall enough to make this list. There are even taller buildings than that that the maker of this video doesn't have on this list but they should be on the list.
Seattle? Will the green space in the middle accomodate tents for the homeless, so all residents can commiserate with the social issues of the City?
I’m just curious about what the vacancy rates for existing skyscrapers are at this time. Is there really a need for these structures? I know cities give developers great tax deals for their projects, but do they also get financing rates that the average buyer of say, a home, could never get? Will increasing financial rates and the “real recession” affect these projects? 🤔

I thought that was a joke at first. It just goes to show some people are so desperate to always talk about New York, they'll even throw in an irrelevant example just to put New York first in everything.

Considering that Chicago has one of the best skylines in the world, if you're going to build a supertall it better be something beyond spectacular. Most of the supertalls I've seen haven't really wowed (especially the one in Miami) so it's pleasing to say that I like the building out in Chicago.

Trump Tower is fine in its own right and inoffensive to the surrounding area, but there’s a lot of buildings in NYC that are more inspiring, especially to be on a list with the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings. Just a block to the east is 432 Park Ave, then two blocks in the other direction is 111 W 57th St. I’d put those higher on the list of notable buildings in NYC than Trump Tower and that’s without going outside of a 3 block radius.
I usually like KPF's work but that Austin project is an overly designed hyper-jacked monstrosity.
What about the Torre rise in Monterrey Mexico with more than 400 meters
They downplayed us, we are part of North América. Reforma Colón and RISE deserve a spot in here, or at least call the video tallest buildings in USA and Canada.
Being an American it’s so depressing being a skyscraper enthusiast… we’re the country that started highrises, but we haven’t built actual whole skyscrapers since the Willis (Sears) Tower and OG World Trade Center in the 70s. After 9/11 developers imo let fear dictate their visions while in Asia they dreamt big like we used to, the supposedly ‘tallest’ in the hemisphere, 1 WTC has less floors and space then the original twin towers and only claims any records b/c of a parapet and skeletal ‘spire’ stupidly at 1,776ft confining future buildings afraid to top it even if they have a higher roof 🙄 (Central Park Tower/432 Park Avenue) and now the only supertall ones are the lame pencil thin ones in NYC only for the super wealthy. The U.S. should make a megatall one. As a Washingtonian though I hope that new Seattle tower actually comes into being and doesn’t stay a proposal b/c as much as I love the Columbia Center it’s held the record here since the 1980s and it’s time to surpass it, imagining a higher observation deck here fills me with joy.

It's actually the Sears (Willis) Tower, as pretty much any respectable Chicagoan can confirm.

If you saw it, Trump made an announcement a few days ago about how America needs to get back to becoming an industrial leader saying that he wants to build 10 new cities that are the most advanced in technology with the most impressive architecture buildings. If he runs again and ends up winning it seems like that's going to be one of his most dedicated goals. Personally I think 10 is to many for just 4 years. Though I can definitely see 3 to maybe a max of 6 being built.
Waterline Tower of Austin, Waldorf Astoria Miami and 1200 Bay Street Toronto are all the greatest ones on the list. Even better than 400 lake shore Dr. Of Chicago, and knowing I’m from Chicago it’s a shame they approved an 800 ft tower on the site of a former proposed 2000 ft. Tower
But the coronavirus and its aftermath killed that project, as many mega projects around the world got canceled at the time. Chicago Spire was going to be one tower that was 2000 feet. Now they're building two towers instead of one; they will be 875 feet tall and 765 feet tall. That's a total combined height of 1640 feet. So lots of commerce will be generated from the site, just as if the 2000 foot building was there. And besides, the developers canceled the Chicago Spire project. The city isn't supposed to let the site sit undeveloped forever. If someone decided to bring back the Chicago Spire or any other mega tower, they'll find another location in the city to do it.
There is one more skyscraper building for Toronto Canada, the southwest corner of Yonge & Bloor at 85 stories may end 50 stories more by developer Sam Mizrahi, Mizrahi Developments.
There's another one they may plan to build later on, its 230 stories tall....

It would be really nice to the green spaces in these towers be public instead of only making them accessible to a few super rich people who may not even live in their own apartment.

Beyond Builds, you guy’s got something wrong. Currently the tallest building outside of NY & Chicago is the Comcast tower in Philly. It stands at “1121 feet. The Proposed Miami tower will only be “1049 feet. NOW! the Seattle tower, (if it gets built) will Surpass the Comcast tower at “1185 feet.
It says tallest all residential outside of NYC & Chi. Comcast tower isn’t residential. It’s office space.

To be quite honest the fact that in America we're bragging about 270-290 meter tall buildings for 2030 is quite sad.
It doesn't matter. Skyscrapers don't matter, what matters is beauty, street layout, and human scaled design. There is a reason why ultra-modern high-rise Hudson Yards in Manhattan is not a loved place, and old town Copenhagen and old Charleston, S.C is. People love Europe for a reason and will travel there from North America just to enjoy the human scaled and interesting streets. Nobody wants the Hudson Yards model, only greedy developers and stupid city governments. Skyscrapers can be 600m tall and most people don't care beacuse they only look good for a far. The street level is usually austere, charmless and corporate blocks that are monotonous in their lack of variety. Ask most people and they would prefer a cute area with interesting streets and squares to walk around and novel experiences, like you find more in Europe and certain neighborhoods in the states. And before you label me as some boring old luddite, I used to be Mr. Skyscraper/sci-fi nerd, but then I saw the light.
Why? Is America supposed to be doing things that other places aren't. And don't forget, America had this whole skyscraper thing going since the late 1800s. It's the rest of the world that's finally catching up.

There is absolutely no need for any more office space or condos for the super rich. There is a massive surplus of office space now with so many working remotely. The super rich have plenty of places to live.

Will the Miami super tall survive a category 5 plus huge storm surge? Probably but what an insurance bill! By mid century perhaps later it will be underwater at least at the lowest levels. Cities built on barrier islands and landfill don’t stand a chance!

Because they aren't actually built to live in. They are an investment or a way to launder money.
Here in Austin all of our tallest residential/semi-residential skyscrapers are fully or nearly full. When the Independent Tower was completed nearly all of it's apartments were immediately moved into.

I agree. It is so mammoth and so tall, it will be like a giant hulk, overwhelming all the downtown buildings. There is no regard to context. I hate the whole trend to these super-tall buildings. Who wants to live a half mile up in the sky? I wish that much attention was given to street level. The super-talls south of Central Park in New York are totally out of scale with that city's great old buildings, such as the Empire Sate. And what is this? The reference to great skyscrapers of NYC -- the Empire State, the Chrysler, and the Trump Tower? Must be joking. There is nothing distinguished about the Trump Tower. Looks dated, nothing interesting about the design. Who wrote this?
You should look up the Wilson Tower. It recently wasn't granted approval by the Austin city council but it's far from being cancelled. If built it is going to be 1035ft tall. 13ft more than the Waterline Tower.

As a Brit here is one thing I don't get. Never been to the USA but back in the early 20th Century there were Skyscrapers that looked taller than those perhaps 10 times taller made today and it was because they had style. Glass buildings of weird shapes are fine but it is starting to become predictable and boring. Nothing even here in the UK beats Art Deco. Look at the tallest buildings in the World today and they are now starting to become a joke. Tallest building in the world where they don't even have a proper sewage system (unless that has now been sorted out). I accept brick has limitations regarding height but say New York for example. Wouldn't it be something to see a mix of old and new style bringing back traditional New York red Brick designed say sandwiched in a way to take the weight of the traditional red brick, but really both old and new tasteful and also stylish. Same for Chicago looking at local style. My views are the same regarding here in the UK and around the World, why does everything have to be bigger than what someone else has? Americans should really search around the Internet and take a look at some of the incredible buildings the USA once had that are there no longer.
You are so right, Christopher. It saddens me that huge size and height seem more important now than style. These do all look basically alike. In the 90's, there was a trend toward interesting tops, a lot of spires went up. I liked them. An echo of the great Art-Deco buildings of the 30's. Now it is all flat tops and glass walls, a zillion feet up the sky.

Trump Tower is a perfectly fine looking skyscraper, but it seems odd to include it as a representative of "majestic" NYC skyscrapers - it's only 202 meters tall. There are nearly 100 buildings taller than it in the city including many classic iconic towers: Woolworth Building, MetLife Building, GE Building... not to mention modern supertalls such as One World Trade Center and Hudson Yards.
Maybe he meant the Trump Building in lower Man , which is a classic Tall at 282.5 m

The facades of these structures under construction are almost post-modern, representing the design trend of futuristic style in the construction industry. The architects are so talented and make efforts to lift the bar of design higher with their ambitions. The sense of beauty becomes more and more significant nowadays because only with strong perceptions of beauty can we feel these charming metropolises deeper. Salute to all the architects, engineers, and laborers who make our megacities more beautiful and magnificent!
Nothing to solute here, they understand the backgrounds on how to make it happen, and they always choose to make the difficult part some stupid horrid looking design. Vanderbilt for example is like citicorp centre and an iceberg become one.

OK, so much misinformation. If you're going to take time to put something together and put it on TH-cam, at least take the time to do your homework. Otherwise, your videos aren't worth viewing if they're gonna be filled with misinformation. At #4, he stated that Waldorf Astoria in the Miami area would be the tallest building south of New York City; that is not true. When doing a straight line on a map between New York City to Chicago, you will see that Chicago sits south of New York City. Chicago already has the existing buildings of Willis Tower; 875 North Michigan Avenue, also known as the John Hancock Center; the Aon Center; Trump Tower Chicago; and the St.Regis Chicago. That's five buildings right there, all taller than the proposed Waldorf Astoria in the Miami area. And Chicago has plenty of other buildings around the same height as the proposed Waldorf Astoria Miami, but those five are taller. Then there's the Tribune Tower East in Chicago, a new tower that will stand at a whopping 1422 feet tall when completed, but he didn't even have that on the list, but he has Waldorf Astoria Miami on the list and that building will be shorter, at 1049 feet. The shorter building makes the list but the taller one doesn't? For the Waldorf Astoria Miami, you were supposed to state that "it will be the tallest building south of Chicago", not "the tallest building south of New York City", because it will not be. Now as for your #2 and #1 buildings. Your #2 building is Forma Tower in Toronto, it's going to be 978 feet (298 meters), but Tribune Tower East in Chicago will be 1422 feet, much taller. Your number one is 1200 Bay Street in Toronto. That building will be 1060 feet (324 meters). Again, Tribune Tower East in Chicago will be at 1422 feet, much taller. Tribune Tower East should be sitting at #1. You have lots of misinformation going on here. And again, Waldorf Astoria Miami will be the tallest building south of Chicago, not south of New York City.

Seattle's "open courtyard" is going to be a disaster. Has anybody ever heard of the Venturi effect? It is going to feature hurricane-strength winds and dead trees where no one will ever want to visit. Dumb.

Seattle is home to some major earthquake faults that are way overdue to slip. The Cascadia fault is capable of producing a magnitude 9.2 and causing the greatest natural disaster in US history. It is a very stupid idea to build such a building in Seattle and even dumber to live in one. Most of these cities are in economic decline because of poor political management and crime; all the more reason not to build these monstrosities.
Trump Tower in NYC is not a super tall skyscraper.
