I’m physically exhausted looking at all that gravel and garden and imaging how much effort it takes to maintain them!
As much as I love seeing your garden just perfect, seeing what goes into keeping it that way is much more helpful. My driveway is much much smaller than yours but keeping it weed free is a huge job and I am past the age of being able to tote around a 4 gallon sprayer on my back! Will definitely try Burnout rather than the roundup I’ve been using, so much safer for the environment! I bungee my sprayer on to an inexpensive cart I bought and wheel it around and that saves my back tremendously. Great video guys! 🌞
I used Burnout on our very long driveway! However, next time I need to remember to tell hubby not to drive the golf cart and work Kawasaki over the driveway while the application is still wet and onto the grass as we now have dead grass the size of tire treads crisscrossing our yard. (We have 15 acres, 4 of which is grass). The lawn has recovered but it has taken pretty much all summer. Next time, I’ll communicate better to the hubby! But it does work!
I use a DIY solution of 1/2 gal white vinegar, 1/2 cup table salt, and 1tblspoon dawn dish soap. The vinegar is the acid that kills the weed, the salt prevents the weed from obsorbing water and the dawn soap is really good at sticking to the leaves of the plant. So far it has worked really well on most weeds, other than the spurge weed which seems to be a pretty tough weed to kill. Alot of times i just pull spurge weeds by hand, its easier i think. Also my solution does not seem to bother my behia grass lawn too much as i think its probably salt and ph tolerent, the tips turn yellow but it comes right back. I have also used regular baking soda on both dallas grass and crab grass with or without alittle water afterwords and it does a good job killing those after a few days because the baking soda changes the ph and kills the plant i guess. I got tired of spending a ton of money on weed killer and so both of these solutions are very affordable to use. The one thing you have to remember about the DIY mix, you need to soak the plant, i usually count to 4 over each plant. The reason is that your trying to block the plant from getting nutrients with this solution, its not like chemical where a dab will do ya because with chemical your attacking the biology of the plant so it does not need very much weedkiller to insert the poisen into the plant. But with the DIY you need to get the plant wet and youll see a huge difference, it will start working immediately. Hope this helps someone.

@@user-px1lb6de5e hi, i would be carefull around roses. Their roots are very shallow and they may not be salt tolerant. It may call for pulling weeds by hand around them. Be sure you get the weed root when you pull them. Then put some gravel or peat moss around your roses to help prevent future weeds.

Do you use a sprayer or can I pour it on?
I use a flame 🔥 torch for weeds. It’s quite relaxing. I do sometimes get carried away.

Glock19ist I use a flame thrower too. Weeds do grow back, but if you stay on top of it the job becomes smaller each time. The flame thrower has been so helpful. I tend to do it after a rain and of course, not on a windy day. So glad to do it this way, because, it’s preserved the beauty of my driveway.

I know this video has been made a while ago but I just stumbled over it. I am European and many properties, from smaller houses with Cottage gardens to the large Castles with endless driveways, have gravel walks and drives. In the old days they were maintained by raking. Hand raking or horse drawn rakes depending on lengths and size of gravel areas. It dislodges weed seedlings and fixed ruts from horse drawn carriages in the old days to car ruts nowadays in one go. I have a long gravel driveway with a large oval part in front of my Parterre garden and 5 foot gravel walks in my back gardens. I just drive my lawn tractor periodically over it. I built myself a triangle out of wood studs that hooks to the lawn tractor. It has a board with a lip on the straight part in the back which holds about 4 solid concrete blocks in a line that get bungied to it. On the bottom stud part is a row of landscape nails sticking out like a rake about 2-3 inches. Depending on dept and size of gravel you just adjust the number of concrete blocks for weight or none at all for very small gravel. This is a pretty fun way to maintain a gravel drive. Some music and a beverage and just drive up and down your gravel paths and drives and admire your blooms and gardens around. It is not work for me as it's fun and the occasional weed that does pop up I just spray but the more you rake the more weed free you stay. It's basically the same maintenance like mowing a lawn just not quite as often, Tip: Design your gravel areas wisely. Smaller areas and smaller rocks if you don't have a lawn tractor and have to hand rake.
Laura, I've always had stone in my garden, say since 1994..and it's called 3/4" Chattahoochee. I love the tans, browns and cream colors. I also use chlorine, pool cleaner instead of chemicals because of Miss Muffett, (My Maltese - pug breed dog), who loves to cool on the stone, kill the molds and mildew during heavy rainy seasons and keeps the stone looking nice and clean, Happy growing.
I'm 2 years late but glad I found this one as I prepare to maintain my gravel driveway. Also grateful for the property size, I have 2.5 acres and you've validated that anything is possible. I have so many ideas and plans in my head and can't wait for Spring 2022!

You have a beautiful home. I recommend buying this drag Harrow. I bought one and it works fabulous. You can pull it behind a riding lawn mower or a truck. It digs in and pulls the gravel to the top. No need to continue buying gravel over and over when it just sinks in the ground this drag Harrow will pull the same old gravel back to the top every time and smooth the driveway at the same time.
I had tried Burnout a couple of months back...wasn’t happy with it...after seeing this video I believe I didn’t use the correct ratio, I mixed it too weak. I will try again but use the recommended application. Thank you! I love your video’s! Would love to meet you some day!

I tried Burnout when you mentioned it in an earlier video. I was very happy with the results. We had quite a bit of spurge this year.
Purslane is delicious.
I understand how crazy fast it grows between my pavers on my veranda! I pull it by hand and use it in the kitchen. It has a lemony flavor and is lovely raw or cooked. Young purslane in salad gives it pop and in soup the foliage and young (i.e. thin) stems are an delightful textured green.
I live in Portugal where it is very common to cook with and I understand without context it can be intimidating to try a new vegetable so to give it context I often make make a potato leek soup (no cream), blend it then add purslane and boil for an additional ten minutes.
Funnily enough in Portugal you can find purslane seeds in garden centers!

Hi Laura and Aaron! This was very helpful. I don't go down our alley, but my husband said there were a lot of puncture weeds by our fence, so, I just got back in from removing them after watching this video. I got rid of other weeds earlier this year, but there weren't any puncture weeds at that time. My husband used to take care of the weeds out back (we have a gravel back yard), but pinched a nerve in his back in March and still can't do anything even though he got a shot and the pain is gone he's still weak. I hate weeding anyway, so I don't keep on top of it like I should. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you, I have Puncture Vine and Spurge on my half acre property, been pulling them when they are young and will now get me some Burnout to spray the others that get too big to pull. Its definitely a job but will be worth the effort later.

I go out every time it rains, I pull so many weeds out of our driveway. I've been using spray bottle with 3/4 Hot Vinegar, and 1 cup salt, and a couple of tablespoons of dawn soap, does a pretty good job on our 2 driveways.
I just bought Burnout to use on crabgrass on peagravel where kids play area was. Saw results later in evening❤️

Filling the sprayer, mark you level lines with Sharpie markers , they come in different color, use different color for different levels.

We too have a gravel driveway, and maintaining it is always a challenge. This video was very helpful and I will try Burn Out this time. I've used Orange Oil and other organic sprays, but none of them have been a great success. Burn Out is one I have not used yet. I prefer the gravel over asphalt for so many reasons, but to see how beautiful your wrap around gravel driveway is makes it even more confirming to stay the course. Thank you for a great informational video!!

Thank you for posting this video. I've seen it before, but came back to it now that I will be laying new gravel again (I laid granular last year ... bad idea!) to help with the pot holes and the weeds.
The big Manor Houses in the UK as a rule have gravel as it fits the time those houses were built. Having concrete does not really jive with the period these homes were built in. Further more, for the rest of us, gravel does not "crack" like concrete. The gravel can be reused if changes, additions, or remodeling has been done. Rain penetrates rather that run off as much.

I am so happy for this video. We have a lot of gravel areas also. A gravel drive similar to the gravel you use and pea gravel garden paths as well as a pea gravel patio. I have been waiting all season for your review on the Burnout product! I used a different product last week the vapors got two of my gigantic marigolds that were shrub size!! :( I will definitely be using the Burnout next year!!!

Then it goes on back and makes a big circle to our Barn. Both my Husband & I didn't know anything about gravel when we moved in the Spring of 2014. The previous Owners put down gravel but I heard from many people that it was not the correct type of rock to put down. So this video was the first I saw of you and this was interesting! Thank you for explaining everything to us! We will be adding gravel next Spring. Oh and thank you for going over the Organic Burnout on those weeds! I am taking notes!

Great video. When I fill my 3 gallon back pack sprayer, I put it on a plastic chair first. Then I sit down in the chair to strap it on. It is much easier to rise from a seated position than to struggle up from the ground...

Thank you for bringing this episode up.....We want to put down gravel walkways thru our conifers so as not to disturb the roots and water for the trees but also able to blow plant debris off and not be stepping in dirt and mud. I had heard there was a size gravel you could use the blower on.....I learned a lot...👍🐝🌻
Just what I needed! Purslane is horrible here in my driveway and walk areas. Will be getting some of this. We have a few other obnoxious weeds that I don’t know the name of. I’ve been using a mixture of salt, dish soap and water. It will kill everything too but it doesn’t last very long and the weeds come back. Thanks.

Great info on weed varieties. I have a 1.5 mile private road and my driveway is 550 feet. All is gravel that must be maintained. Maintenance is not cheap! To spray the road and gravel twice a year is approximately $300.00. not counting the equipment. I have a very large sprayer that fits on a tractor or back of a truck to spray. Spraying can take a couple of hours. Uh. In winter, it's plow time. Plowing can take anywhere from 2-4 hours!! Exhausting. Plowing . I have a plow truck with an 8ft Boss plow. It takes at least four passes to clear the road. Plowing does redistribute some of the gravel. In spring, I have an attachment that fits on back of tractor which will drag the gravel in place. And yes, it is all Expensive! I only give this information because so many folks simply have no idea what it takes to live out on acreage. And yes, I'm a crazy single almost 70 yr old woman! Keeps me busy and broke😊
Can I ask why you have continued using gravel as opposed to putting the driveway, at least, in concrete or even say a fly ash? It would seem to be much cheaper in the long run.

Blessing to you! I've got an aunt who's in her 90s and she is still on her large chili/onion farms outside of Hatch, NM. She doesn't do what she used to, of course, but she was out grading and managing all of those farms till she was into her 80s! Thankfully, she has 1 of several grandsons who has taken over managing it all for her. She still keeps involved when and where she can. She is the closest thing I have ever seen to the Proverbs 31 woman. I have learned much from her!
Side note: When I was a rebellious teenager who didn't want to follow any instructions, Aunt June could say jump, and I would jump twice and then some! She had my complete respect! ❤😊
@@mariankay6482 No offence taken. My road cost me $92,000 dollars. I do have concrete in front of garage for parking which is starting to degrade after five years because of the snow. In northern Idaho we get snow that can be many feet deep and stays for our long winter's. The gravel works just fine. Snow plow is raised about 2" above gravel. Very easy to drive on all winter.

Wish I could choose the type of gravel that is in my driveway. I live on farm that has been in our family for over 150 years! So my husband, brother in law & nephew decide major things like that issue. I make the decisions in the gardening chapter! Great info on maintaining gravel driveways & walks! I just started using Burn Out this year! And yes I did learn my lesson about checking the conditions, luckily my one bush came out of it & looking beautiful!!Thank you!! 😊😉🌿🍁🍂🚗🚜👍🌿

Great helpful video on spraying gravel! Thanks! Hayracks are beautiful! But those rocks in the gravel are stunning! Have you done a video on rocks or boulders in the landscape? I'm debating on putting some in my backyard as a sitting area next to a pond. You guys give me so many ideas!
If the markings on the tank are raised, you could rub some paint over the area (with a rag) and they'll be easier to read.
I've been using Preen in my gravel path and patio each spring (they now have a formula that's supposed to last 6 months), but am concerned for wildlife.
There's also a flame-thrower type you connect to an LP tank, but my luck, I'd set my house on fire. Scary.
Kate Hillenbrand lol! You wouldn’t set your house on fire 😊. We have the flame thrower, called a “Weed dragon” it works well though and has no chemicals! Has a trigger to torch the weed with so its very controlled! You just sort of swipe over the weed, including thistles so the leaves are shinny. It causes the liquids to boil down to the roots and the weeds die. I use it a lot , I want a bigger propane tank!! 😁
I just bought salt to spray on a solution.
The flame thrower types dont work. I tried a handheld one that had it's own small tank and it didnt work at all for me.

I am highly interested in gravel. My gravel drive is 1200' long and it is a mess. I grade it a few times a year with a box blade, but the weeds are an issue all over my property. Good tip on the Bonide.

I am on Cape Cod and have the 3/4 inch crushed stone area in the front of my yard. I have also done this at my moms yard. In both cases it is for parking plus the town has an occasion to dig up these areas for utility work etc. The areas are both 8 by 40 and its amazing the amount of weeds you can get in these small areas. An old timer told me he put down road salt on the ground before spreading his stone dway and the salt will burn any new weeds. Not sure how long that will work. I have tried the natural dish soap and vinegar weed killer, but it does not kill the root. Anything we can do to stop putting chemicals in the ground I am all for it
