I rewatched this just this January and halfway through the fourth season remix I said in my best Ron Howard voice: “the problem with the fourth season is they spent more time explaining jokes than making them.”
Yeah, I watched the remix version only, and on many episodes, I found myself just pressing the +10 seconds over and over again when they were recapitulating and explaining obvious jokes. It was clearly added to increase the runtime.
I think many people will make this same accidental mistake. Netflix has the 4th Season Remix play by default and buried the original cut in the "trailers and bonus features" section.
I didn't even know that it was a remix! I loved season 1 to 3 and the two last seasons were really bad so watched them without being fully commited. Now I need to watch the original 4th season even if I'm sure it's too late :( and thank you for saying where it is 'cause I'm not sure I would have find it :)
I watched the remix knowing an original existed and, while I didn’t realize I’d be missing out on such important reveals, I still think it was probably worth it because 15 long-ass episodes, some focused on characters that aren’t very entertaining on their own, would have been a major chore.
Same!! I was wondering why IMDb only showed 15 episodes in season 4 when Netflix had 22. Also about 5 episodes in I was wondering why half of the EP was Ron Howard reminding the viewer what happened one episode before and it's Netflix were all binging. Leaving just 15 mins of actual show
I was wondering why season 4 felt so confusing and unfinished. There was a lot of bouncing around and like the video said, a lot of narration. I’m going to have to go back and watch the original.
The narration was ridiculous, and mostly pointless. They acted like it was still a weekly network show and everything needed to be recapped in the next ep.
This is the thing that got me annoyed at the remix. Every episode there's a 3~ minute recap, when you most likely are binge-watching and already remember what happened 20 minutes ago.
i think the pointless recaps are just a side effect from them transitioning from fox which is a weekly network show to netflix which is something that was made to binge your favorite tv shows.
The remix really upset me! The whole point of the show was that it was so subtly and smartly crafted. I'll admit that I didn't like the original format at first because it was confusing, but that was the point! The payoff came from the punchlines and misdirection being revealed in later episodes. Also, thematically, the misdirection and ignorance of each other's lives are cornerstones of the bluth family dynamic. I'm really glad you showed me where to still watch the original cause I've put a lotta people on this show and don't want season four to disappoint.

For me, it's a show about the characters and some clever long-form storytelling, something which is severely lacking from most comedies. So not everything can be funny when you've also got to tell an interesting story too, and if the story pays off and the story is funny without jokes, then that's great.
I watched season 4 kind of oblivious to the fanbase because I was an actual literal infant when the show first came out. I thought it was great. I thought it was super clever and one of the best seasons. and then I learned people found it super confusing. Sure, it takes a couple of watchings but so does every season.
Season 4 (original cut) was actually pretty great. I thought the new format worked really well and was hilarious. Season 5 isn't as good but even it had some incredibly funny moments.

I was so annoyed when the play that "we couldn't possibly not play" gets cut completely. The only one that really worked for me in the original was the Gob storyline (Tobias to a lesser extent), but as bad as the timing was in the original, the remix was worse.
What pissed me off the most is the last joke in season 5 (and sadly the series) is a reference to an old Lisa Minnelli movie that some people may not even notice
Holy crap now it all makes sense! I was rewatching the series and unfortunately watched the remix again as I really thought netflix only had the remix and I enjoyed it but some of the storylines felt so random; especially fakeblock! I was expecting some big reveal/resolution as GM was in huge trouble bc of investors and him must of having huge debts. He suddenly said Maeby was fired and had a speech and that was the end of it?? But holy shit your explaination about the storylines that Michael was dating Rebel and the audience were supposed to think Gob was the other man with hints but then finding out it was GM?! Amazing! The constant rehashing of scenes I JUST saw and narration made it exhausting to watch sometimes and the confusing time jumps didn’t help either...
The fourth season (original cut) is actually fantastic! I love things not in chronological order where jokes makes sense way later, etc. It reminded me of Pulp Fiction. I'd love to see more things like that.
I've seen both edits and honestly just feel that Season 4 just wasn't all that funny in general, regardless of how it's told. I wasn't that big a fan of the storyline they chose, and the whole way it led up to a cliffhanger ending just didn't feel particularly compelling (ending on this cliffhanger ultimately hurt Season 5 years later since it was stuck having to pick up immediately where the cliffhanger left off). There were also just story elements that I didn't particularly like (Ron Howard becoming an onscreen recurring character, all the jokes about FakeBlock in general). The original cut of Season 4 told this story non-linearly, which I think just made it feel overwhelming. I'm fine with a story being told in a challenging way, but it has to be entertaining and make you want to revisit the material, yet Season 4 just felt forgettable. The Remix cut was a little more accessible pacing-wise. But the season just wasn't all that funny or memorable.
Yeah I agree with this. I never really felt that season 4 was nearly as compelling or entertaining compared to the originals, and the remix didn't really change that.
I still prefer seasons 1-3, but I see your point and I kinda agree, though I think the remix did make the overarching narratives easier to follow and some episodes were easier to stomach (I really didn’t think Lindsey had interesting episodes)
I'm one of the few who adores season 4 (for a while I had the vanity license plate BLOCKED as tribute to fakeblock). I was eager to watch the recut version because I thought it would iron out some of the messier plot points, but I couldn't get past the fourth episode. Jokes that were funny in the original cut lost all their punch due to bad timing.
I’ve made a huge mistake. Netflix put the remix season in with the others. To find the original cut, you have to look in Trailers and More. As a semi new fan of the show I didn’t know the remix was a remix at all, and have suffered through it twice now
Man you're blowing up lol This was definitely made from a very loving place. AD is my favourite TV comedy of all time and the remix really bummed me out.
I definitely agree with all the points you made. I just recently got into the show in general and by the time I finished season 3, I wasn't sure whether to watch the remix or original season 4. I ended up watching the remix first and I'm just now finishing up the original cut and I gotta say, I'm liking the original so much better. The editing as a whole for the remix felt very clunky and out of place. As for the original cut, it has that old charm that the show had back when it was on FOX so I enjoyed it a lot more.
Season 4 has "that old charm"? What? Season 4 completely changed the characters (they all went from being likeable douchebags, to just douchebags), and the humour was nowhere near as funny as the original.
The problem with the way S4 was originally told is that it felt like they kept telling the same story over and over again. I could not tell the difference between the episode I already watched and the episode I’m watching.
I watched the original cut of season 4 when it was new and really enjoyed it. I was genuinely surprised to see how much people online hated it. I rewatched the whole series recently and decided to go with the remix. I noticed all of the problems you mentioned: revealing the fakeblock twist and who Gob and Rebel were dating too early, all the missing lines and scenes, etc. I don't really understand the problem people had with season 4 originally. It really wasn't that hard to follow.
Yo, the "get away getaway" scene exists in the remix. I remember I didn't like much the original because of its confusing narration (chronological order) and the ending/cancellation; I had some expectations with the remix BUT the remix was horrible mainly due to the episodes having way too much narration/recollection of past episodes/events. Also, how could they think of not keeping at least one of the plot twists till the end?
I'm not against change/originality but after watching the original season 4 it's clear that the show works best when the cast is together. Imagine if there was a season of friends / the office where where each episode focuses on a separate character, it just won't work. The dynamic relationship between the ensemble cast is clearly the core of the show
I thought the exact same thing! When the family is together the characters kind of play off each other and part of the comedy is how dysfunctional the family is. It just wasn’t cohesive
I watched Season 4 back when it first came out and couldn’t stand it. The episodes were incredibly long, and the show took place over so many time periods that I found it difficult to keep track of what events took place at what time. Lots of episodes started in the same place, ended in the same place, but then I had no idea who was where during any of the intervening time. What stage were any of the remaining plot lines at? This cut made it easier to follow. I absolutely agree with the excessive narration though. Most episodes began with nearly five minutes of “Last time on Arrested Development...”
I loved the first three seasons, one of my favorite shows ever. Season four kind of ruined the series for me though. It felt repetitive and like old jokes were revisited and kind of explained for new viewers....also it just wasn’t nearly as funny. Just my opinion though.
@@spenser9908 Indeed. Maybe they should have gone with a movie, but they waited far too long. The first three seasons were like catching lightning in a bottle.
@@wvu05 It's like Community and Malcolm in the Middle, three seasons of unstoppable gold. The re-watch value of AD is amazing though. I've literally watched through the first three seasons perhaps 20 times, and still delivers.
@@spenser9908 I have watched the first three season of _Arrested Development_ so much that I pretty much have all 53 episodes memorized. To this day, I still haven't gotten through the last few episodes of season five. It was just so joyless at that point. Well, maybe I'll "push through" this weekend.
I actually really love the 4th season even though most people didn't seem to. There's so many good moments in it, but Gob's arc in this season has some of my favorite moments in the whole series. I have a head made completely out of doo doo
What the hell? I just went to rewatch season 4 on Netflix and just realized they've gone with this version. This six. The reveals of the setup jokes were the best thing with this season
Season 4 was amazing to me right away, I absolutely loved the mystery and while I get people wanted more because of the original cast not really being together, I appreciated how great of a story they told by telling a story out of sequence that eventually tied together. I think season 4 is as good as seasons 1-3 honestly its just too bad season 5 was a weak season.
this was a great video. The remix is really tragic. and it's so sad to see New viewers watch the remix first because the original is buried in some trailers menu... it's really sad actually. season 4 is incredible! it should be everyone's first time, and the remix can be an interesting but flawed revisiting for devotees.
Maybe there was a re-edit, but the "getaway, getaway" song is in the remix, it's just that in this version it appears *after* Lucille says that line to Buster
I had seen season 4 3 times before I watched the remix and yeah, I’ve only seen remix once: if I want to binge the series I always go for regular season 4 now
This helped me understand why I just rewatched the show on Netflix (really enjoying the first 3 seasons) and got so bored by season 4 I couldn’t continue.
Honestly, definetely worse than the original cut but, the whole thing is worth it for me for the addition of the sound of silence gag with Gob in the rock and the echoey music
People all slamming dunks on eachother over this why? The reason season 4 did not work because the actors weren't able to work together due to schedule conflicts. I love the OG seasons for many reasons, but the Bluth family has always been the heart of the show. The chemesty with each other was pure gold. If one had been craving a snickers bar for ten years and was finally able to get one but upon opening the wrapper were greeted with nuts and caramel.. sure those are good too... but..... I don't hate season 4 by any stretch but was pretty let down by it. To the extent of not having an interest in another if that was the format moving forward. Glad I gave it another shot because season 5 feels like 1-3.
Many thanks for making this video and sharing all this info with fans of the series. Nicely done. I watched the fourth season when it was released on Netflix, and then later had no idea that it was eventually altered to "look" like regular episodes (i.e. not character-oriented). So now I know that Netflix has the Season 4 Remix in the foreground-- where you choose seasons/episodes-- and the original unedited episodes are under "trailers and more"? Wow, that should be reversed.
I mean there were some goods things about the for season and some goods jokes, gob, George Michael even. Maybe had some good ones, the remix was overexplained but the original was confusing for people I liked the non lineal story
I first watched the show last year shortly before Season 5 came out, and watched the remix because I didn't really know that there was an 'original'. I was pretty confused because there were so many flashback and narration per episode, that I lost track of what is still a flashback, something that's gonna happen on cinco, or if it's happening 'right now'. So if you're watching the show for the first time you should really watch the original cut, but if you rewatch it and already know everything that happens, I guess the Remix is alright as well.
I loved Season Four when it was released, and was stunned when I talked to other people who hated it - most of whom gave up after Episode 1, which was also stunning!
I only watch thw Remix version, buy what the hell, I'm wanted to rewatch the whole show anyway, so this time I will go for the original cut, thanks for making this video
Interesting video! I really appreciated that they tried something different in the original run of the fourth season. I don't think it always worked as well and it changed how some of the jokes had to be laid out and delivered from the previous format, but they were trying something new and it was interesting. I definitely think it was the weakest season to that point regardless, sadly. Like you said, doing it from each character's POV meant reveals were hidden and delayed. This SHOULD have added a lot of rewatch potential, but I just didn't feel the burning desire to rewatch it having gone through it once. It had a few stand out moments, some decent joke updates, and some nice new jokes as well. But overall it just felt like the original magic and franticness of the show was gone--as is so often the case when bringing back once-popular shows sadly. The time jump always creates a disconnect from the original material. The organic nature of the creation is gone, the show has had time to solidify with fans who now have demanding expectations that can almost never be satisfied, and all the cast and crew have aged to different points in their lives and careers to the degree that what may be compelling or funny to them a decade later just isn't the same as what it was a decade before and so the humor gap will exist no matter how much you try to disguise it with format.
Omg I have been trying to watch the remix and it is condescending as fuck. Its like they are trying to explain show to someone who they don't think will understand through narration. All the buildup and delayed gratification is ruined by over editing trying to simplify the timeline... the way its edited makes you feel like you are watching the same scenes a dozen times...
Definetely agree with your video but there is a small mistake. The scene in which the "get away" song is recorded and is supposed to make Gob leave does definetely exist. It is not missing but probably in another episode than the payoff with Lucille and Buster
How can people hate season 4 soo much that they made a remix? It's a brilliant season, it's like top tier quality, Rick and Morty level quality. I cannot believe something like this was made so long ago. I would like to think it was just ahead of its time.
@@manladan5929 it's not that complex, it's dark humour, meta commentary on si-fi tropes and fart jokes. Every episode has the same story structure with awesome charector writing and running gags. It's a very simple show, even a retard can enjoy it. And that's the best part. Even when it talks a about philosophy, mental health, society, cinema, life and death it still has time to make dumb jokes. And that's what we want at the end of the day, the world's smartest man in the world, turning himself into a pickle to avoid family therapy.
just finished watching the remix and it ends so abruptly?? i wish i knew the original was still available, finding out the software is just a woodblock app in the last episode is hilarious.
The problem with the remixed season is that they tried to re-edit the original version into something it wasn’t. It’s like putting a puzzle together, not liking the results, and then going back and trying to smash pieces together into something different. It just doesn’t work, especially since the original version was done in such a deliberate way with a specific structure in mind that contorting that into something different just doesn’t work. Also, the recaps are insane in the remixed season. There’s one episode where out of 30 minutes of show, literally the first 10 minutes is a recap of events leading up to it. It becomes an over explanation of storylines. If you’re going to watch a version of this season, go with the original. It’s a shame that when you’re binge watching the show, it defaults to the remixed version.
I haven't gotten up the courage to watch The Remix yet. I LOVE Season 4 of Arrested Development. It starts of a little slow, but it just gets better and better. And because of late season happenings, when you rewatch season 4, you see so many scenes in the first handful of episodes in a new context, and previously unfunny scenes are now funny or more clever. While the remix may streamline the storytelling, I don't see how it will play the same at all.
Wait I am so upset I didn't realize there was an OG cut of season 4 before the remix!! 😭 I feel like I have been robbed. Watching the original cut ASAP
Season 4 won me over big when it first debuted. While I didn't 100% like separating the characters, which was a necessary evil, I enjoyed seeing the characters shine when they could. The remix disappoints me. It feels like one big blob slowly being guzzled down. Still more enjoyable than season 5, which is an old piss jug. Painfully recycled jokes, too much focus on Ron Howard, and unsatisfying plots. At least that's what I remember having tried to repress it. Season 5 of AD is my least favorite season of all of my favorite shows. Michael starting a self defense from your family class was funny though.
Just watched it for the first time (originally saw the original cut), and exactly! ITS SO BAD, so confusing, so many plot holes and inconsistencies, and somehow so much is left out despite being longer than the original
WOW. now I'm really mad that Netflix presents the remix as the original intent. I had no idea it even was a remix until I finished it. That fucking sucks. At least now I know what I had that tug in my brain saying this season wasn't as strong as the earlier three.
I completely understand your criticisms and a main problem with the re-edit is that the production team clearly thought the audience wasn’t intelligent enough to know what was going on. However I can’t say I think either is worse or better as my issue with the season wasn’t the editing but the writing and while it was very meticulous and thought out it was not in any conceivable way necessary and lessens the perfection and utter brilliance of the first three seasons when you view the 5 seasons as a whole narrative.
it was kinda nice tbh......when i watched season 4 original back when it was new I liked it. And now i went to watch it again and it felt fresh....now I know why. The idea that the creator of a show go through the effort of "remixing" his own show is a very interesting idea.

I still prefer seasons 1-3, but I see your point and I kinda agree, though I think the remix did make the overarching narratives easier to follow and some episodes were easier to stomach (I really didn’t think Lindsey had interesting episodes)
I liked the original Season 4, had me in stitches
I'm one of the few who adores season 4 (for a while I had the vanity license plate BLOCKED as tribute to fakeblock). I was eager to watch the recut version because I thought it would iron out some of the messier plot points, but I couldn't get past the fourth episode. Jokes that were funny in the original cut lost all their punch due to bad timing.
You should really have got "anustart"
I haven't watched the remixed version yet, and now I won't. Thank you for helping me to avoid making a huge mistake.
I’ve made a huge mistake.
Netflix put the remix season in with the others. To find the original cut, you have to look in Trailers and More. As a semi new fan of the show I didn’t know the remix was a remix at all, and have suffered through it twice now
Man you're blowing up lol
This was definitely made from a very loving place.
Leslie Smeaton i just got to s4 first time watching show. Is original n remix practically the same? Should i skip remix?
Leslie Smeaton youre an idiot if you think season 4 “has that old charm” 🤙🏻
Amen
Season 4 has "that old charm"? What?
Season 4 completely changed the characters (they all went from being likeable douchebags, to just douchebags), and the humour was nowhere near as funny as the original.
The problem with the way S4 was originally told is that it felt like they kept telling the same story over and over again. I could not tell the difference between the episode I already watched and the episode I’m watching.

honestly, the best way to watch season 4 is to watch the original cut twice. it's a masterpiece
i watched the remix before the original season 4 and damnit i so wish i would’ve watched the original season 4
I am glad someone else liked season 4!
I like it but it’s just inferior to the originals. It’s still a well above average comedy season.
Bruh how does this channel make one banger and then cut I want more :(
Season 4 has 15 episodes, somehow they managed to turn it in 22
I watched the original cut of season 4 when it was new and really enjoyed it.
07:10 that scene is in the remix...
Couldn’t agree more. Glad someone put this in words

I really loved the original cut, the way moments changed as we discovered new facts was really fun.

Season 3 ended the story perfectly. Season 4 felt tacked on.
What's up with the pixelation at 0:46?
I actually really love the 4th season even though most people didn't seem to. There's so many good moments in it, but Gob's arc in this season has some of my favorite moments in the whole series. I have a head made completely out of doo doo
Great observation! You put to words the uncomfortable feeling I had watching the remix.
Subbed too! Would love to see more of your work :)
What the hell? I just went to rewatch season 4 on Netflix and just realized they've gone with this version. This six. The reveals of the setup jokes were the best thing with this season
I personally loved all they later "ah-ha!" moments from season 4
Thanks for showing us where the regular season 4 cut is !
Skip to 1:50 for the list
No
The getaway song does appear in the remix
I found both versions difficult to sit through. The remix does get credit for spacing out the scenes with the terrible new side characters.
Well this is an underrated channel if I've ever seen one. These videos are so well put together!
Thanks for the video! recently rebinged and it felt very... off. Plus didn't know that we could actually watch the original!
The timeline didn't add up in the remix!
How about some explanation as to why no ones mouths are in sync with the sound on season 5?
Maybe there was a re-edit, but the "getaway, getaway" song is in the remix, it's just that in this version it appears *after* Lucille says that line to Buster
I had seen season 4 3 times before I watched the remix and yeah, I’ve only seen remix once: if I want to binge the series I always go for regular season 4 now
thanks for letting me know where to find the unremixed version. ima check that out
Amazing video, can't believe you have less than 700 suscribers. You just gained a new one
This helped me understand why I just rewatched the show on Netflix (really enjoying the first 3 seasons) and got so bored by season 4 I couldn’t continue.
Just discovered your channel. Can’t wait to see more from you.
Glad I gave it another shot because season 5 feels like 1-3.
season 5 is a sham and season 4 is the best season of the show
is season five the original season four? i’m not going to watch the remix and i’m not sure what to do
You can find the original season four in the Trailers and More section
Dude. I didn't even know there was a remix!!! I found the "4th season" really difficult to love because of these reasons. It all makes sense now!!!
The orginal is just as hard to fallow. As it to jumps around in time. But by even bigger amounts
S4 had one of the best editing for a tv-show i've ever seen, especially for making it out ot necessity and the remix is truly... so so bad.
Rick and morty is horrible
@@manladan5929 wo wo wo, are one of those 'last jedi was a masterpiece' type of people?
@@malhar__8932 I don’t understand how anyone could watch it . I’ve tried and ended up with a head ache
@@malhar__8932 no I mean it’s soo annoying
DUDE WHAT WHY DONT YOU HAVE A MILLION SUBS?
just finished watching the remix and it ends so abruptly?? i wish i knew the original was still available, finding out the software is just a woodblock app in the last episode is hilarious.
Where do you watch the original?
The last line of this video sealed the deal! (but make sure to watch out for the seal! Loose seal!)
I didn't know it was the original version. I made a huge mistake
While the remix may streamline the storytelling, I don't see how it will play the same at all.
the show is completely over now
Wait I am so upset I didn't realize there was an OG cut of season 4 before the remix!!
I just finished watching the show and I wish I knew I could watch the original season 4 on the Netflix website... The remixed version was strange.
I could think of 482949 reasons
WOW. now I'm really mad that Netflix presents the remix as the original intent. I had no idea it even was a remix until I finished it. That fucking sucks. At least now I know what I had that tug in my brain saying this season wasn't as strong as the earlier three.
I hate the characters Marky and Debrie, they add nothing to the show.
I actually really like the original season 4. It's probably my favorite season.
i think the only reason people like the remix is because is 22 minutes long..but like there more episodes?
smh my head, where's the new videos
I loved Season 4 (the original version). It might be my favorite. To me the remix is unwatchable.
I completely understand your criticisms and a main problem with the re-edit is that the production team clearly thought the audience wasn’t intelligent enough to know what was going on. However I can’t say I think either is worse or better as my issue with the season wasn’t the editing but the writing and while it was very meticulous and thought out it was not in any conceivable way necessary and lessens the perfection and utter brilliance of the first three seasons when you view the 5 seasons as a whole narrative.
season 5 is a sham but the original season 4 is a perfect ending
it was kinda nice tbh......when i watched season 4 original back when it was new I liked it. And now i went to watch it again and it felt fresh....now I know why. The idea that the creator of a show go through the effort of "remixing" his own show is a very interesting idea.
Hey, I just watched all of your videos and I really enjoyed them! I was wondering if you were going to make any more because I’d love to see them! If you don’t think you will that is obviously fine and great
