Welcome to the latest installation of "Jenn is rebranding herself 2019"! In this one, I show you some footage from my recent trip to Germany, where my dad's side of the family is from. In his tiny lil village where he grew up, a paper factory was recently converted into a huge climbing gym.
The whole grading system was cool because, as I've said before, I don't think you can perfectly equate how skilled you are at climbing with the highest grade that you've climbed. So, it was cool for me to look at a climb and guess what grade it would have been before I got on!
As always, pls comment some video ideas for the future! I've gotten some cool ideas from previous comments that I'm gonna try and develop further :-)

I went there today for the first time!! It’s pretty close to where my mom lives now, so i can go climbing when i visit her
Here in Germany most boulder - gyms don't will have such elaborated rating system. Mostly, gyms prefer to have color codes like in this gym. However it is quite unusual to have 3 different colors for joker routes. Normally you see 5 to 7 different colors from very easy to very hard with maybe one joker-color. Reason for that is: most gyms don't like to think about grades that much, so with the color the determine more or less a possible spectrum e.g. in my gym would be a "red" something between a 6a-6c+ an orange however would something in between 5c-6b. Fun fact ... There is no standard each gym invents there own color-system
Had to go back and see how your videos started out. Was cool to find out you have a German connection, as well. I was born there while my dad was in the Air Force. Then went back while I was in the Army. Ended up living there for 8 years and have a son who is half German. Been a long time though. I was there when the wall came down.
I loved this video! There aren’t that many female-focused climbing channels so I’m glad you’re focusing more on climbing 🙌🏼

Overhanging tip!!! You want to be very specific and precise with where and how you place your hands and to save strength

Next time you're visiting and if you have the chance - try checking out the larger area. We have tons of great bouldering gyms in and around Cologne/Duesseldorf!

Most german gyms are like this with the colors. I´m climbing for 3 years and only once climbed on a graded route and that was in france:)
Dont know if someone already mentioned it, but you are/were not that far from some awesome outside bouldering spots :)

normally i just silently watch, but how the hell did you get into that place :D it is so remote from everything else... and i grew up there so i know how remote it is.
it's where my dad's side of the family is from! :~) he grew up there. he took a vacation to california one day and met my mom, which is why i live in los angeles and not in lindlar :)

YES i was in germany in december! in a little town called lindlar where my dad's from 😀awww magdeburg sounds so nice, i haven't been to that side of germany before but i've always wanted to visit!

Cool stuff. Okay you visited Germany. But why where you bouldering in a city (I remember it is not even a city :D ), where not even a train is driving? The gym is really sick by the way. A really good bouldering spot for such a little cool village :D And the people are also amzing. It might be the only village where I would relocate 😂 I visited the gym for Boulder Bundesliga in February. Did you watched the video of that? I should send you the link if not, because it's cool
Tom Climber hahaha wegen mein Vater ist aus diesem Dorf!! it was too small for him, so he moved to los angeles after Uni. i come back to the village every year or so to visit my oma and opa. i climbed here because it’s so close to my grandparents’ house, i can walk there! in los angeles, we have to drive everywhere by car :// but next time i go to germany, i want to try out a lot of places in the cities. maybe cologne, which is the closest city to my grandparents. and no, i haven’t seen the video, but i would love to check it out! :D

My tip for overhangs/roofs: make it like the United Nations -🇹🇼 🇿🇦🇨🇭🇪🇷🇬🇭🇵🇸🇰🇷🇲🇳🇳🇫 flag and counterflag to your heart's content

Lawrence Chen OMG i just came back from a climbing session, and i kept thinking about your United Nations comment, and I swear it actually helped me get up an overhung V5!! and my brother does climb a little bit, but not super often. he’d rather lift :p so when he’s at the climbing gym, it’s all campus all the time!!
Germany layout, with Walltopia, looks like Origin in Las Vegas. Having fun-cool. Good to not grade check some times as we prematurely doubt ourselves? Had same issue in Japan last month (late December) when to Yokohama/Tokyo because we went to see my wife’s mom. So much static style sets, less dynamic (at least climbs I tried). As a result, getting better with crimps, balance, etc. You’re doing awesome and most importantly having fun. So dig your editing, too. 🙏👏🤘
so cool that you got to climb in tokyo! and i agree with what you say about grades -- i find that many indoor grades are so subjective anyway! the climbs in this gym were burly -- i wonder whether the routesetters had a favorite type of climb that they preferred to set :-)
Yep, subjective grades and that’s why I climb so many places-avg of all grades. Dig the skills of every set as much to learn.

Damn! Did you ever climb in Berlin? If you happen to come here definitely check out some of these gyms (sorted best to "worst"): Südbloc, Berta Block, Boulderklub Kreuzberg, Ostbloc, Brightside.
I also feel fancy AF when I do a heel hook, or a toe hook for that matter. That is, until I slip and I land on my arse and my glasses go flying.
love your videos, started watching them from geek climber.. Just a suggestion to make your channel even more interesting is to include in challenges to achieve within 30 days!!! (ie, handstand, splits, pull up etc)
