I sold my 2020 Trail Boss in December. I loved the styling, but there were way too many fault codes for a truck with less than 5,000 miles. After getting temporarily stranded in a Wal-Mart parking lot, then convincing it to finally start, I made a third trip to the dealer, and sold it immediately after they "repaired" it. I bought a 2021 Tundra the same day. Never buying a GM product again.
I recently purchased a 2021 tacoma , and I was definitely interested in getting a custom trail boss, changed my mind when I saw the amount of people having transmission problems with them.... I absolutely love my tacoma,
2021 3.0 10 speed transmission had to replace at 35000 miles. at 45000 now find it acting up again. just had to bring it in because when you try to start it, Would not start, and the starter would spin for about 8 seconds (this happen after driving from a job left me stuck on the side the road for an hour). After about an hour it started. they said they had to change a wire harness. never had this many issues with a truck.
2021 RST Tahoe with the 3.0 Duramax and 10L trans. It has been at the dealer for 7 weeks now. Started with a hard downshift into 4th or 5th gear at highway speeds with a clunk and then upshift with clunk into 10th. Trans temp went from running a consistent 135-140f to 195. First attempt to fix was changing the valve body which only made it worse and added more problems. Now at dealer number two and GM engineers are saying it's torque converter and valve body. We will see what happens.
First sorry your having issues. If you read the comments below someone could get the impression that there all bad. As a Process Control Engineer I look at the numbers. I have a couple of websites that track complaints and the numbers were less than 10. One of the sites will also show complaints to the NHTS where the majority of customers will log there complaints. For GM (Chevy and GMC) 60 transmission complaints for 2019 and 4 for 2020. Ford logged 26 complaints for 2019 and 2 for 2020. I know that these numbers are not absolute. Many others could have the same problem and do not report them. The number of complaints for the 8 speed was much higher indicating a larger problem. In my research I learned that the 8 speed issues were thought to be moisture found in the trans fluid. There was a TSB issued to flush the transmission and replace it with Mobile 1 transmission fluid. I did find one thread where the Chevy dealer did the same service on a 2019 10 speed. The owner claims the problem went away.
I did some more research and found That GM Still uses the 8 speed. In fact on the 5.3 engine only the Trail Boss and High Country come with a 10 speed. On the GMC side The AT4 and the Denali the 10 speed is standard, while it is optional on the SLT. The 6.2 and the diesel only come with the 10 speed. WT, Custom and Sierra trims come with a 6 speed transmission. The GM numbers above include all transmissions.
Update: now at 24000 miles and it has been working much better. Of course the dealership said they couldn't find any issues/recreate the problem. But the truck did receive a random unexplained update not long after that and it has been better since then except for an hard shift every once in a while (nothing regular or that I can reproduce). Could they have sent some sort of update that adjusted something with the transmission?

03 Avalanche with 249K miles, mine had a couple hiccups with the 4L-60 when new and they sorted them out. Sometimes it’s hard to discern quality issues from just plain technology growing pains. As an R&D guy on that transmission years ago (yes they actually started on the 10L in 2005 and put it on the back burner a few times) it’s impossible to see everything that shows up in the “End Consumer” world. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it in short order. Most of them operate incredibly well. I would buy another Avalanche if they still made them, as mine was and still is incredible. Only a handful of little issues in 18 years. And my Suburban before it too. It’s time for a new truck though and I want some of the late nights I put into that 10 speed back lol...
Without reading all of the posts... mine was doing the same thing.... every 13 miles. 2020 3.0L and I took it into Checy and they said it was a Transmission Speed Sensor that is inside of the Trans. They have had it over a week and still don't have my truck!
Transmissions and Brakes are the frequent issues with this manufacturer, when uncounted with problems, taken to dealer, after a couple of days, yes that's normal, slipping tranny and spongy brakes are normal.
10 speeds across the board in gas or diesel are headaches. TH-cam is flooded with them having a multiple of problems. Down hill seems to give them the most problems. Just to much overkill in tech crap

There are issues developing with the 10 speed. I heard GM is going to an 8 speed made by Allison but have not confirmed that yet. If there are metal shavings in the transmission, it is fried. Ford is having same issues on their 10sp.
Why doesn't GM ditch the 10l90? ZF makes excellent 8 speed transmissions. They shift like butter, and are lighting fast. More importantly they're reliable.

I know how to fix it. Go to a ford dealership. Trade it in for a f150 with the 10 speed. Boom problem solved. But seriously that sucks man, hopefully you get it figured out!
Every major manufacturer has been having transmission issues recently, especially in the first 3 gears. I own a 2019 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3 and 8 speed transmission and it’s been fine so far and I just hit 15k mileage. It hiccups every now and then with mild harsh shifts from 1-2 and 2-1 and also the first few shifts in the morning on occasion will feel like it slips out of gear briefly. Totally random but nothing major. My boss had a 2020 f150 limited with a 10 speed that was in the shop more than on the road for tranny issues. As far as GM goes though, I think the issue is more with the DFM or cylinder deactivation. It’s all just too much for the computers to make smooth shifts all the time. When under light throttle especially because the TCM and ECM work together to try and shift while activating or deactivating cylinders. That’s just my 2 cents anyway. Warranty my friend. If I were you I’d bring it to the dealer and show them your video. They should be able to pull DTC from the computer and go from there, even if it runs flawlessly when you bring it to them. I’ve never seen a CEL in my truck yet but the day it does come on it’ll go strait to the dealership. Good luck!
Good thing I bought a 2020 Tundra!! I was really close to buying a GM truck but my neighbor convinced me to buy a Toyota. 15k miles so far and no issues! :)

@@chargerman165 What’s your opinion on the ZF transmission in Ram? I heard and seen good things about it? Now of course it depends on how people maintain, drive and haul with it etc and that goes for any make.

I have a 6 speed 5.3 also. When they went to 8 speed, reviews said worse mpg. Go figure. Side note, if you run your 6 speed in M5 (manual speed) AFM shuts off and you stay in all 8 cylinders.
In reality every problem could be major or extremely simple. It could be a $10 part causing the problem. You can’t come in the comments section and automatically say “X” is junk without really knowing.
Next time it gets stuck in gear, just put in L and try shifting it manually for a couple of minutes, then put it back in D. @@tskraj3190 That's not entirely accurate. If you are talking about the 10 speeds, the design is similar, but they're made in different factories. Also, our "computer boxes" are not even remotely similar. OBD2 law states that certain DTC's have to confirm to a certain spec. Beyond that, our CAN's are very different. Firing order is irrelevant. Why that would make a difference, I have no idea. Every single cylinder motor on planet Earth has the same firing order. What does that tell you?

Sierra 2001 310000 i was thinking about getting a new one but
I have same problem 2023 trail boss 3.0 only 150 miles 😳
Wow. For $50k these new trucks should never have a problem
Without reading all of the posts... mine was doing the same thing.... every 13 miles. 2020 3.0L and I took it into Checy and they said it was a Transmission Speed Sensor that is inside of the Trans. They have had it over a week and still don't have my truck!
Did this fix it?
Transmissions and Brakes are the frequent issues with this manufacturer, when uncounted with problems, taken to dealer, after a couple of days, yes that's normal, slipping tranny and spongy brakes are normal.
10 speeds across the board in gas or diesel are headaches. TH-cam is flooded with them having a multiple of problems. Down hill seems to give them the most problems. Just to much overkill in tech crap
It’s all good J Lee just trying to help out sorry. I will say that the battery is not used just for starting a truck .... that’s old school . Chevy has had big problems with the 8 speed and now they are having problems with the 10 speed nothing new.
My 2020 8 speed shifts hard when it’s cold and shudders under hard acceleration at all temps. My 2018 was even worse with the 6 speed
The 8 speed has a shudder bc of the fluid being wrong. The dealership should change the fluid for free
@@jaredfletcher1587 what do you mean wrong. You mean it came from the factory with the wrong trans fluid
@@SxSandcampingadventures yes its wrong. The fluid they put in is hydrophilic meaning it holds onto water and the fluid they change it with is hydrophobic. If you dont get it changed, the torque converter will wear out.
@@jaredfletcher1587 As long as it’s not transphobic, I don’t want to get yelled at. Thank for the info.
@@SxSandcampingadventures yeah dont want to be canceled 😂. You are very welcome. Other than the fluid change, the transmissions seem to be good after that
My 2006 4 speed still runs and shifts perfectly.
Of course, it only has 4 gears... my lawnmower has more gears than your 06
2021 gmc sierra 1500 and it did the same thing when it only had 20 thousand miles on it the dealer was like there is nothing wrong with it
I have a 5.3 8 speed and something like this happened to me once I switched it to sports mode and accelerated smh 🤦♂️
I have the same issue with my ram 1500. It is stuck in 4th gear. To me it sounds like you are stuck in 4th gear to. If the engine revs up to 200 rpm then you are stuck in 4th gear.
2000rpm*
There are issues developing with the 10 speed. I heard GM is going to an 8 speed made by Allison but have not confirmed that yet.
If there are metal shavings in the transmission, it is fried. Ford is having same issues on their 10sp.
I'm a GM guy, but these newer ones....between AFM and the transmissions. The 99-06 were the best
Why doesn't GM ditch the 10l90? ZF makes excellent 8 speed transmissions. They shift like butter, and are lighting fast. More importantly they're reliable.
Shame on these car companies. We even bailed them out with tax payer money, and they just make such crap. And we have all sorts of tariffs on foreign cars. Pathetic.
Same issue. Usually happens going uphill
Clean you battery terminals and make sure they are good a tight. This new trucks do some things because everything is electrical
It's called GM quality bud👌
@@HazeyDayzz420 I have a 2020 Silverado first week brake problems not good at all. And now they have a recall on a seatbelt problem. The truck only has 2.300 miles on it .
The battery is only used when starting a vehicle but with newer vehicles having auto off when coming to a stop it may need the battery but I don't see electrical problems coming from loose cables if so it wouldn't start.
@@indman101 read up , ok the truck is all electric brakes, steering all the electronics in the truck brakes everything on the truck is electronic. Read up on recalls and problems on the truck the first problem was brakes
Funny to see people thinking all gm trucks do this when it’s rare. Kinda like saying all dogs are bad based off of one. I work for three dealerships and they all have there quirks.
Gm makes junk wake up
@@cesarurzua8234 meanhwile mine is running great at 263k miles LOL
2020 Chevy transmission are having problems
I don't get it if you are paying about $50'000 for a truck like this than get the best out of your ride I mean this is crazy.
Humm, maybe try tow haul mode to see if that changes anything.
Damn I just bought a gmc 1500 slt 2021 ! I hope I don’t have this problem! But more likely I think I will ! Damn this is not good .
Nope it’s not good
Drive it in sport for first 30k. Mine runs like a champ. Been hauling woods and pulling out ford from ditches all winter -45 starts with ease
Unfortunate decision!
Same here but silverado
@@michaelpanacheese604how you do that bro
You do know ford and gm designed this transmission together..
I know how to fix it. Go to a ford dealership. Trade it in for a f150 with the 10 speed. Boom problem solved. But seriously that sucks man, hopefully you get it figured out!
New chevs aren’t what they used to be..what was wrong with the 6 speeds? Always have to put more “advanced “ things in vehicles nowadays..
mabe it can skip unnecessary gears at low speeds if not necessary.
Is there any improvement if you drive it in reverse?
Now that you mention it When I reverse I hear one of my rear breaks have a light squeal then goes away after the breaks get hot then don’t do it
Every major manufacturer has been having transmission issues recently, especially in the first 3 gears. Good luck!
Gm has had engines failing out the ass too
I have 2020 chevy custom 4.3 it jerks sometimes like you can feel it very little when it changes gears idk if it’s just a Chevy thing
Good thing I bought a 2020 Tundra!! I was really close to buying a GM truck but my neighbor convinced me to buy a Toyota. 15k miles so far and no issues! :)
Ok
The 10sp has alot of issues while the 6speed has less issues.
what issues does the 10speed I have one and it's flawless 2021 chevy trailboss 6.2 1700 miles on it
Possibly Limp mode. be careful dont burn up your transmission
Condolences for your problems. My work unfortunately MAKES the parts that go into that 10L80.. 😒😒🤦♂️🤦♂️ I wish that they kept the 6.2 with the 8L90’s like the 3rd Gen. But, because they’re TOO RELIABLE, they pull them off market, because they can’t sell spare parts to fix it, so they intentionally made a cheaper product, to sell spare parts. 🤦♂️🤦♂️ I just want you to know, I am so sorry for your situation. 🙏🙏
Why can’t GM fix these problems with there transmissions? I have a Silverado with a six speed and had to put a transmission in it!!
What was the check engine light ? Ever get it figured out?
The check engine light went out on it's own and I never got a code saying what it was.
@@crkdtoes but does the truck seem to shift normal now?? Would you recommend this truck with this transmission or stay away?
Seems to be fine now. I can't say that I wouldn't recommend it. I really like the truck overall, I just don't like unsolved mysteries.
That’s why I sold my truck and bought a used Altima for $9k. I just can’t pay $50k for a truck
I see you only have 11k miles, did you take it to the dealer to have them fix or diagnose? What did you find out?
Dealer will prob come with a bs excuse like “it needs a software update” when in reality its junk
Imagine the Tundra having an issue like this. My goodness. Mr Toyoda would be rolling in hid grave.
yeah Toyota would never let this shit happen.
Wouldn’t have a problem like that with a dodge.
🤣🤣👍👍👍
Yeah, just Dodge problems.
I worked for Chrysler Dodge for years and I call BS
@@chargerman165 What’s your opinion on the ZF transmission in Ram? I heard and seen good things about it? Now of course it depends on how people maintain, drive and haul with it etc and that goes for any make.
Good luck getting it fixed....GM says it’s not a defect with workmanship or materials but an engineering defect which is NOT covered under the new vehicle warranty. Another disposable vehicle from good ol GM 🤦♂️
Any update on it?
I have 2019 gmc 1500 elevation 4x4 with the 10 speed transmission.
Im at 80 thousand miles and im shifting hard in the low gears and shuddering in low rpms when i cruise in any gear.
I bought the truck used and lifted so im pretty sure all warranties are voided.
HAs anybody solved this issue
That’s why you buy Nissan trucks ,never a issue
I’m a Chevy guy but if I was buying a new half ton it would have to be a tundra or a 5.0 Ford
Gm has problems with 8 speed trainsmisstion buy the six speed or ten speed
I’m glad I have a 6 speed 5.3 lol
I have a 6 speed 5.3 also. When they went to 8 speed, reviews said worse mpg. Go figure. Side note, if you run your 6 speed in M5 (manual speed) AFM shuts off and you stay in all 8 cylinders.
More reasons to never have an automatic transmission car/truck
GM= Getta Mechanic
We had a Denali. 6.2. So many quality issues. Over priced junk. After 6 reprogram sit never ever shifted right. Not even Close
I thought your gonna tell s about a lot of trucks.
In reality every problem could be major or extremely simple. It could be a $10 part causing the problem. You can’t come in the comments section and automatically say “X” is junk without really knowing.
It might have gone into limp mode
Neutral drop it and take it back to the dealer get a new transmission, Ford’s have the same problem now too
GM where recall comes standard from the factory.
@Greg B I don't care if it's built by Santa Claus, it's in a GM and it's their reputation not Fords.
Too bad there not making the 6 speed for the 2022 model year, that was their better truck transmission for modern gm trucks
Next time it gets stuck in gear, just put in L and try shifting it manually for a couple of minutes, then put it back in D. Sorry to hear you have issues, GM ain't what it used to be compared to 2006 and older models. Also get your self one of those
OBD ll plug in readers that hooks up to your phone so you can check the readouts yourself.

The Ram ZF8’s are great now. Older Rams did have issues. Just bought my first Ram and love it. Ram finally corrected this issue a few years back. 👍👍👍
@@ramrider1453 true i mean even the old ones werent that bad either. The 2gen had issues using the 42re which was for light duty jeep laredo and cherokee that used it. The 46re was a good one that was heavy duty made. Only issues at that time was the torque converter and no reverse or shift problem which wasnt the tranny itself it was the pressure solenoid that would go bad in them and the spring thingy for the reverse was bad replace those and then your tranny would be save alot of people assumed they were bad and took them to shops or swap them out not realizing this. The 42re would grenade themselves if they were not taken care of and the torque converters on them especially. The 545rfe alot of people call it trash tbh it isn that bad. I have 180k on my 04 same engine and trans. But i feel like the reason for failure would be service to them and im sure they beat the piss out of it in 2nd primary gear also known as passing gear. The new 8speed is an animal i wonder if its possible to swap into a 3rd gen 😂

just give us a manual transmission option. this is ridiculous
2000 2006 best Gm trucks bro
Junk, trade it in for a Tundra, and look at them again in 15 years when you get tired of all the miles with no issues.
Ford gm 10 speed transmission is nothing but issues they should of stick with the 6 speed
Ford’s have this also same 10 speed, they are so bad they won’t even shift if they are cold. Ford fixed it by putting an auxiliary transmission heater to heat it before being driven. Stupid
That sucks. Brand new truck. Its all the Chinese parts they are using now in GM vehicles.
My boss had 2020 Chevy truck did the same thing with the transmission had transmission replaced twice then traded off for 2021 gmc truck runs great with no problems
Typical government motors junk pretty much anything past 2002 or so is crap. The 5.3 I never liked. It wouldn't pull the hat off your head but would last a while. Body and interior wouldn't hold up to well but seen a lot go 250k or so. Late 90's with 350 where good trucks.
It's the damn Ford transmissions and computer boxes that GM has been using. Even the firing orders are identical. I would take a 5.3L over a 5.4L or 4.6L any day though.
@Greg B My 2015 Silverado, 4X4 double cab with the 5.3 V8 has been good so far. I have the 6 speed transmission and almost 68,000 miles on the truck.
Ford does more R n D onb10speed..barely little to no issues...gives Gm the 10 speed, Chevy changes electronis and software= junk. for fucksak3s Gm, my 3three 8 speeds were junk ..now im driving a ford after 35 years.
I work for Ford. Both our 10 speeds are junk. We have class action law suits on them. Buy an extended warranty because you'll be using it.
GM uses the same Computer box and Transmission as Ford. As a matter of fact they have the same firing order. That's your "Ford Quality".
