    Don't worry about it ... I've noticed that when you cry, you get out some of your frustration and your mood usually picks up and you leave that particular stumbling block, negative experience or sadness behind. This appears to be your thru-hiker process. It's WAY more productive and less damaging than some other people's processes!!!

    Hang in there. You are almost done now. We keep watching your videos as we sit down to join a meal. I am learning a lot from you and hope to put it to practice during my hike next year. I am working on a youtube channel for posting hiking videos, and I quickly learned just how time-consuming that is. So THANK YOU for taking the time to do the videos. We appreciate every single one of them.

    When you left Liberty Spring to do the Ridge late I was SCREAMING at my computer. I knew what lie ahead of you and how hard it would be. I love the Whites. I drive 3 1/2 hours one way at least once a month to spend time there hiking and backpacking. One mile in the Whites is harder than a mile in many other places. And the weather this year has sucked. The views are spectacular. And the best views in the Presi's are yet to come. Don't let the bit from Galehead hut to South Twin get you down. Don't let the Wildcats get you down. The Presidentials are enough to make up for it. I hope you have a spectacular bluebird day for your Traverse.

    24:24 the Whites are really tough and take a lot out of you. 8 -10 miles daily is all you can do. You are doing great! It's like twice the difficultly of the rest of the trail. You will be able to get back to normal milage in Maine. Don't let it get to you! You are still rocking the trail! We believe in you!!! 🦵🦵🌲🌲🌲😎

    Hi Maddie 👋 Thank you 🙂 Hope you're doing well, and happy you were able to get a good weather day for the views👍As a Granite Stater, I would like to express my disappointment and discontent on how you were treated at the hut. No excuse for that. Whoever is responsible owes you and so many hikers an apology, because this isn't an isolated occurrence, over the last few years it's been happening more and more, not just at that location. It definitely needs to be addressed. NH shouldn't be known for that behavior. Those prices are so ridiculous 🙄 The staff needs a lesson in tact and decorum. Take care, stay safe my friend 🙏 Appreciate you!

    • @JRoss707
      @JRoss707 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are so correct. In my thru hike of the John Muir Trail, in August, I took a nero in Mammoth, I took the public bus up to mammoth Mountain Adventure Center where I was gonna get a connecting bus up to Reds Meadow to get back on the JMT. Just as I pulled in, the Reds bus took off and I was stuck there, it was getting late and dark and I didn’t know what to do so I just stealth camped in the forest close to the Adventure Center. I woke up very early and went back to the adventure center hoping to get information about the first bus out to Reds. Walking out of the forest to cross the street, I first ran into a crew of what looked like city utility workers in a truck, I think they knew I was stealth camping, so I was a little hesitant to go ask them. These guys were so cool, they reassured me. There’d be a bus in 45 minutes. I think they totally understood about having to stelth camp for the evening. They were just really customer service oriented, like I think they were probably trained in it for their job. Shortly after arriving to the adventure center, just a walk across the road it finally got to be close to 630AM. All the businesses were closed, but workers started coming in, and one of them an older woman, looked like her job was just that of a public service ambassador. She wore the same clothes as the utility workers I talked to earlier, so I assume she was a public service employee. She absolutely rocked, she was checking in with everyone around who is waiting for buses or had questions and she was so helpful. This left me with a great feeling leaving Mammoth Lakes, and I definitely plan to return there sometime with my family for a vacation.

    As someone who lives in the Granite State (NH), and who has lived in several towns along the AT in NH, NC and TN... I can absolutely say that NH gets a ton of visitors from out of state. And honestly, I've never met a Granite Stater that doesn't follow the state motto "LIVE FREE OR DIE". You and The SmokeMaster are living free!! MANY on our planet don't understand what that REALLY means! Ignore the haters who judge others based on their own fears and lack the willingness and acceptance that YOUR paths is YOUR OWN!!! KEEP ON KEEPIN ON.

    I will apologize for my evil laugh as you were struggling on the Kinsman trail. I have hiked the Kinsman trail from Cannon Mtn. down to Lonesome Lake, not so lonesome as it's got easy access from Franconia Notch and I93, and was scared out of my whites. Lonesome Lake hut. One of my faves. I spent a night there during caretaker season. There was still ice on the lake.

    7:15 the leftover hut food is cold pancakes in the mornings. Don't eat any cold eggs, you don't want to know! I agree that all the day hikers and most of the hut croo look down on thruhikers. No respect for someone that has literally walked there. It's sad. Just ignore them. We know how amazing you are! ❤

    • @db.mc2
      @db.mc2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's for sure. The majority of day hikers are tourists, and the hut crews cater to the tourists because they pay those ridiculous prices. And those tourists are the ones ruining the trails because they don't follow leave no trace, and basically don't give a damn. The prices are justified by the powers that be to offset all the rescues of unprepared, and illogical tourists and people who require being rescued. That's it in a nutshell. 🤷‍♂️😔

      I’m not sure I agree with you on some of this.
      I’m watching another AT. Hiker group. They just went though Shenandoah NP. When you enter the park ( on the AT) they have a sign telling you how far away from the trail you have to be to camp, water and such things. Also the one area they camped at there is a sign saying you can’t camp past this point because of the elevation. I hike there all the time so I know. They still camped and even bragged about that certain spot. It’s not always the tourist damaging these places.
      I’d be a tourist and I know all about what you should and shouldn’t do. Just cause your a tourist doesn’t mean you will destroy the place.

    • @db.mc2
      @db.mc2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @dawnsteisslinger353 I'm referring to NH trails, and what I've seen and experienced here. I understand where you're coming from, and don't discount that, it's just the influx here, and what's been happening for quite some time. I have no doubt that plenty of thru hikers, day hikers are guilty of it as well , some people just don't get it. The trails are to be respected, so they are around for all to enjoy. There is a town in Vermont that had to pass an ordinance to close certain roads during peak foliage because of people trespassing on private residences to take videos and pictures for social media, it's getting pretty ridiculous

    Bummer about the hut:( My daughter and I stopped by in August. The people staffing it at that time were very welcoming. We had food for a small donation. It was filling healthy and delicious. Agree the overnight cost is prohibitive for many. We were camping nearby for $22 a night which is a bargain for an older retired adult:)

    I think by the time you were on this part of the hike, you are so tired, ready to be done with the trail that it is all a mental game to keep yourself going…did you think looking back that some of the worry about the weather was as much about having a good reason to just take a day off and a break, or really concerns about the weather. i am totally not being critical when asking this question…i have never done a long distance hike like you are doing /have done, so im just really curious about how your body and mind fight each other when you get tired and you want to finish the trail because you are so close, but you are also hating the trail and would just like to run fast away from it…lol…and sit and eat cheese burgers for days and not move again for at least a week. I can only imagine the emotions you go through from day to day and hour to hour as you go along…i imagine the stress of getting there on time is a big factor. I think after you are done, I imagine it would like a woman having a child…so painful you dont want to do it ever again…but once its over…you cant imagine not going back or doing another hike. I hope im right…because i cant wait for your next adventure…but at least one thing…this hike will make van life seem like a breeze…😂😂

Not to mention the rude ones at the pond. When you probably read this you probably already know about the storm coming up the Eastern Coast. Praying for your safe journey. God bless you both.

    Yes, the Whites are a different critter - the trails can be difficult, the weather can - and often does - change in mere moments and treeline is 4,000 - 6,000 feet lower than in other similar mountains in the temperate zone. Remember the Serenity Prayer? Well, here it is: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." You must take The Trail and the mountains on their own terms. Accept that and manage the rest the very best you can. Be well, stay safe. 🥾

I can't believe they won't let us thru hikers sleep for free. At least let us set up a tent outside!!!! That's OK tho. We didn't want to go the extra miles anyway. I hope they go out of business soon. I can't believe I'm this angry.

    Just came back from Jo- Mary road. Hikers are routing around gulf hagas and the Hermitage river crossing. It's a long ways off if you're still in New Hampshire. I crossed Mud pond outlets before Antlers and the water was up to my 32" inseam, but has since dropped. The provided rope at the first ford was necessary, but you can do it. No idea how sketchy the ford is just north of Mahar landing....be brave and do it with company filming you.

    if that was the Lonsome Lake, I got the SAME vibe when I went there a few years ago, and I wasn't a through hiker ...ya so weird, I would never go there and did not renew my membership because of it.

    Doesn't anyone have a needle and thread or dental floss you could use to fix your shirt so you aren't feeding the moskas? In a pinch, duct tape will hold your sleeve together. I hope your package has a new shirt!

    What you had coffee at 4:00 a.m.? And then you didn't out on trail until 8:00 a.m.? I'm not sure what the problem is here? You should get out on trail right after you have your coffee...

    The whole reason for the huts is to give through hikers a place to get off the trail. The issue with Lonesome Lake is that it is very busy with day hikers and families. Just remember, hut croos are regular people and just like regular people they have there good and bad days.
    You have a caretaker at the Liberty Springs Tent site. That caretaker is a paid position. That caretaker takes care of the privvy, does trail maintenance and probably helps with search and rescue.

      Yep, definitely! I wish I would have said maybe those lonesome lake folks were just having a bad day as we all do, but when I watched the footage back I forgot to say that!
      The Liberty springs caretaker was awesome! We ended up seeing her again while hitch hiking!

      @@BeerinBeautifulPlaces I am hoping that Mt. Washington and the rest of the Presis were clear for you. It would really suck to miss the views from the Franconia Ridge and the Presidential Range. I can't wait to see the rest of the journey through the Whites.
