    There are exactly 2 acceptable ways to customise Codsworth:
    - Give him a bowler hat.
    - Give him Assaultron legs.

      that's not why she wanted a human body and you know it, it was so that she could feel the spark of creativity and inventiveness that humans possess, to be able to observe things and come up with ideas regarding them; before, she had only been able to analyse and compile data, run tests, and prepare results, all the kinds of things a machine would do, but with a human body and the intelect that comes with it, she was able to properly study disease and sickness and the way it causes suffering and then come up with a new and improved form of medicine, not something a machine could do

    • @theinternetpolice2078
      @theinternetpolice2078 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      My theory is that complex robots, like Mister Handies and Assaultrons, eventually develop personalities if their combat inhibitors are never broken yet they're still not properly maintained. That's how we get robots like KLEO and Codsworth, who are clearly sapient but don't need synthetic bodies. As Curie was properly maintained throughout most of her existence, her only form of sentience was her personality subroutine.

Also as a side note I was reassuring that person that you couldn't kill the companions you've befriended, because you know they were talking about leaving a companion behind because they didn't want others to kill them and then said their current understanding was only they could kill them also codsworth the specific companion they were talking about is marked essential because he gives you the diamond city quest.

    • @spindash64
      @spindash64 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +45

      It’s possible he DID go a little crazy, in the sense of being stuck in a pre-war loop… it’s just that the issue solved itself when we finally DID come back, and that prior to this, he had the luxury of _knowing_ his owners escaped to a vault, and that the odds of some part of your family returning, no matter how many generations removed, were near 100%
      Some other things that come to mind:
      -Sanctuary doesn’t show many signs of direct damage from the nuclear war: in fact, many of the trees from before the war are _still standing,_ albeit having shed their leave. If they haven’t collapsed and rotted in that time, then it’s not unreasonable to assume they’re still alive and just shed their leaves for the winter (you leave the vault in late October). As such, Codsworth didn’t have to worry about his circuitry getting fried by the EMP effect of Nuclear Weaponry
      -rather than patrolling the inside of a building, he patrols an entire suburban neighborhood. This makes it far more obvious that the world has suffered serious damages than if he were confined to a building interior

    • @sirlinkthefourth6755
      @sirlinkthefourth6755 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Personally I don't buy that he is sentient, all his behaviours can be explained with 3 parameters in place, an empathy routine in his nanny bot coding for the purpose of caring for older children a call the cops routine for witnessing serious crimes committed by their owner or other people like a burglar and most importantly a limited routine for adapting to his environment to better serve his owners. All the computers that canonicaly go sentient have one of two things a human brain or a room sized super computer and in case you didn't know yes synths have full blown human brains and a component inside of it you can't detect with current technology without killing the synth to dig it out everything else is just a regular ass human the reason corsairs are more dangerous than your avrage joe is because they have fallout nv type cybernetic enhancements like kelog did, I don't blame anyone for not knowing this shit it's all terminal lore 99% of players skip that shit lol.

      I think if someone is willing to accept the 'personhood' of Codsworth, they would likely be at least sympathetic to the personhood of all Synths.
      Honestly, how the player is introduced to the question of "are Synths people" is really interesting.
      Codsworth is one of the first characters the player really meets, and he's the most "human" Robot we ever meet - he's not malfunctioning or really insanely operating on faulty old orders, and he's even got a moral compass. Could that make him a person?
      Later on we meet Nick, who's basically a Gen 2 synth with a person's personality programmed into him. He's also his own man too. Is he not a person?
      Plus there's Curie, the Robot who requests to be put in a Synth body.
      Not to mention the big reveal with Danse, with how he's a human who we later learn is an unknowing synth. Is his personhood any less, for this twist?
      I think it's all very interesting, and personally I can't see how anyone could walk away from the game without at least some sympathy for the Synths. 🤔 🤓 🤖

    • @Zeakthecat
      @Zeakthecat ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ericremotesteam i personally think to answer the question of "are snyths people" is to answer another question "are synths sentient?"
      and some synths do display signs of sentience. cogsworth (while not a snyth himself) has enough to be declared sentient i feel like. he is self aware and aware of others actions. he has a conciousness (he understands what is right and wrong and encourages the player to make right decisions) and some level of intelligence (knowing what is around him, understanding civilization died and reborn, among others)
      while one could argue hes reacting off of programming, i don't think so, cogsworth, for all thats worth (no pun intended), is wanting to reproduce and his friend to reproduce as well, to start a family.
      he was only programed to service a family in the most human way possible, not express the need for a family and for the mc to find their family.
      i think there is a star trek TNG episode that puts robotic/android rights on trial in a beautiful way named "the measure of a man".
      as for the answer of "are synths sentient", some have achieved sentience.
      X6-88 is one of the few synths that has achieved sentience in fallout lore.
      if they are sentient, they should be considered people. if they are not sentient, they should be considered robots. simple as that.
      however im more surprised fallout 4 devs did not put snyth rights on trial to answer that question, there is a civilization post nuclear war, even minor, im more surprised they didn't make that a mission, with the requirement to build a huge courthouse. it would make for some interesting decisions.
      you could recognize X6-88s sentience and secure rights of sentient synths or revoke the rights on behalf of the institute, and X6-88 is captured and reprogramed.

      FO76 kind of disproved this, with its loading screens. "Realizing their robots' enormous military potential, General Atomics International developed the Mr. Gutsy as a powerful war-time equivalent to the Mr. Handy."
      Another loading screen tip also verifies that Mr. Handy preceded the Miss Nanny.
      All things considered though, that means that like in the many other ways Codsworth has unnaturally developed; he must have developed his own improved combat subroutines, or possibly Nate had them installed/made... Nate was a soldier, the missus was a Lawyer; mayhaps they wanted to be sure Codsworth could protect Shaun. I'll stick with the former theory, though -- Codsworth was practically two glitches shy of being self-aware anyways, and you don't get to stay around your place of residence for 200 years, let alone in ONE PIECE... without becoming capable of holding your own against the odd Radroach, Feral Ghoul, Raider or ruthless Scavenger.

      Maybe they programmed in some sort of home defense routine? And that served as inspiration for the Mr. Gutsy? Or they just took some code from the Mr. Gutsies and plopped it into a newer model of Mr. Handy for benign improvements or something and didn't bother to take out the combat subroutines because Fallout.

    The thing about passing the charisma checks multiple times for Codsworth vs. X6-88 once is likely due to bases of comparison in terms of time. Codsworth is the only companion (aside from Nick) who shares the commonality of remembering pre-war life, even if only for a month or two. This sets his morals high (like Nick) and even higher expectations for you since he knew you and your family from before. X6 might be rigorous in his thinking due to his own programming but is willing to allow some questionable things to people if it furthers the Institute’s objectives. He doesn't know you or think in the way a pre-war person might vs. people constantly surviving in the wasteland. That’s one thing the interview with Piper made me reflect upon. The drastic differences in mentality over that time period and how much of the decision making is largely survival based, even in groups, rather than more socially or even morally centered. But part of the draw to Fallout is the contrast.

  • @cellbuilder2
    @cellbuilder2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Codworth's case is actually very similar to WALL-E's.
    In WALL-E's case his rather basic programming evolved over 700 years to become a curious, kind, helpful, arguably sentient personality that could understand love, because that was all he was knew thanks to "Hello, Dolly!"
    Codsworth, having much more advanced programming and personality, took only 200 years to achieve what is pretty much sentience due to his pre-war memories of the Sole Survivor's love and care for their memory, molding his morals and standards into that.
    Now we have at least two confirmed cases (fictional yes, but still believeable) that a robot, if left alone for long enough with appropriate material, can indeed develop some kind of sentience.

      He’s a beast early game, although not being able to wear armor or equip new weapons without the Automation DLC means he loses some combat utility later on

    Ppl might not agree with my opinion but Codsworth is one of my fav companions. He’s a naive robot with morals and really grows into his own self beyond his programming.
    (With the dlc- I make him into a protectron)

    i always wished that codsworth had more to say about the 200 years he spent alone, trying to protect the neighborhood and the experiences in the commonwealth in that time, he must’ve seen so much!

    In the end, he does have his family, albeit not his original family. Instead he has you and all your companions, most of which treat Codsworth with respect. Of the vanilla companions, Codsworth is really the best at displaying emotions and making you feel for him...which is ironic since he is a robot. The other vanilla companions have their moments, but Codsworth is consistent.
    All that being said, my favorite companion is Ellen the Cartographer.

    Thing is, Codsworth did evolve past his default programming to the point he became self-aware of his existence. 200 years can cause serious strain on ones mental state.

    Codsworth is the first thing we see when we start the game, he's in the kitchen making us coffee.
    And when we return he's still trying too clean up the house. I love beating the automatron DLC and making Codsworth into a OP robot follower

    Codsworth is one of my favorite companions in the game, along with Piper, Nick, Curie & Preston, and along with Preston & Piper one of the 3 companions I have permanently assigned to the Castle (my main base of operations, and I try to rotate between those three as my active companion from time to time). Also, I made sure to massively upgrade Codsworth once I got my first Robot Workbench up & running: He now has Assaultron legs, Robobrain torso, Sentry Bot arms (with dual gatling lasers) and an Assaultron Laser head, all of which have the voltaic frame armor (with tesla coils in the torso), and he completely wrecked an entire squad of synths during the Institute's attack on the Castle during my latest play through with his eye laser. And I can think of no one better to help look after synth Shaun whenever I'm away on missions to help the various settlements of the Commonwealth.

    Okay, I don’t know if you meant to kill Virgil in the cave because you jnew it would be enough to get the dialog, or if you knew that the echo would be just absolutely amazing, but either way "Mend the plate. But the cracks remain" IS SUCH A GOOD LINE and the echo is just mwah! I can't think of any other eay to explain it other than you know that Pacha meme template from Emporer's New Groove? That's how this all feels. Just perfect. Also wonderful video as always, Ox!

    For me i use AFT on Survival mode because the tiny strike squad gives a real immersive feeling when clearing large compounds.
    Piper is the romance and my favorite follower as she matches the MM playthrough so well.
    Then theres Cait and McCreedy as both are the embodiment of loyalty once you show worthy.
    Lastly theres Codsworth and Dogmeat as the links to your past.

    Great episode as always. Ox never disappoints.
    I embrace Codsworth and make sure he is good. Usually until I get his perk and then use another companion. However if I don't need to get other companions perks I scramble between Codsworth, Curie, and Cait.

    Honestly I dropped Codsworth off in sanctuary after returning the deathclaw egg from salem.
    He likes it, but next to the nest is technically your reward innthe form of a deathclaw gauntlet. But also the remains of some settlers their brahmin and a raider.
    In that moment, I felt like, even though I was righting the wrongs of the gunners, I was also aiding what was almost definitely an actual monster that eats people. And I feel Codsworth is also aware of that.

    One of the first things I do when I get the robot workbench is fix up Codsworth... got a few mods for robot paints and suchlike so I can make him look like he just came from the factory... seemed like the least I could do for the old boy.
    I always got the impression that, because of the time he's been alone, his memories of the past and his family, and all that's happened to him, he's grown far beyond his original programming... he's not just a robot... to me he's more like Nick and Curie (and even Ada to a degree)... more human than most of the people you deal with in the Commonwealth.

    • @Ultimaton100

      Unfortunately, the vast majority of the folks at the Institute have become detached from the outside world and see things purely from a scientific perspective. There are some like Alan Binet and Madison Li who show compassion, and Binet in particular believes synths are indeed people, but these two are in the minority.
      That’s the biggest flaw of the Institute in my view. It’s not their brilliance that makes them dangerous for the people of the wasteland, it’s their lack of empathy and compassion. Science is a very important field of study, and the technological advances the Institute has achieved could all be applied for great benefit in rebuilding the world of Fallout, but humanity cannot be saved by individuals who display a profound lack of it themselves.
