Philippines faces economic challenges from falling birth rate and aging population

  • Birth rates in the Philippines are falling and the government is concerned about the impact on the country's future. Only a decade earlier, it encouraged smaller families, but that policy seems to have been too successful.
An ageing population and high global demand for Filipino workers, means the authorities may have to develop new strategies.

Falling birth rate? I think that is better at this point. It shows Filipinos are getting educated and conscious. Give free good education to those in "school age" and better compensation to workers right now. As for citizens in their 60s don't force them to retire if they can still work. They started retirement age to give way to younger employees, this time those who are in 60s can be consultants or give other tasks that is not physically demanding. 5-10 years from now those in school will work and those who are in their 20s will prolly start their own families.
The important things are free good education and access to healthcare. It is possible since we know the country is generating money just watch how much money government officials are allegedly corrupting - not millions but billions!

I’m from Hungary and there has been a pretty big influx of Filipino workers into our country recently after our government started giving out more visas. I would say that it’s pretty telling that there are so many of them working here despite the fact that we are a relatively unknown and small country with wages way below Western European standards. As far as I know from Filipinos, while our salaries are way higher than what they could earn in their country, they are aware that they could earn better in Western Europe. But there are already so many Filipinos working in Western European countries, and they are virtually spread everywhere around the world as long as those countries are at least a little bit better than the Philippines. A lot of these workers are way too overqualified for the jobs they do here, which tends to be assembly work at factories or agricultural seasonal work, with many holding college degrees. But they simply cannot land a job with them at home, as education is subpar and there is such a huge number of graduates with so much of the population being young that many fall out and become underemployed, being forced to work in low-level menial jobs even with college degrees. And low-level menial jobs at least make a lot more money anywhere in Europe than in the Philippines.
So I would say that at least that problem with the huge supply of labor and graduates will be solved with this, even if a falling birth rate has negative consequences.

I agree most of what you said except on the Education is "Subpar". As a newly hired government worker at the Department of Education, Every year the education Department revise their Curriculum in order to make the students compete globally in terms of educational standards which is already putting a strain on us, the teachers and students. And as a law student, i also noticed most newly graduates are starting to immediately take masters degree, Juris doctor, or Medicine just to give them a boost when it comes to being employed. almost everyone has an undergrad degree and a Board license to the point that their qualification is starting to be mundane. so others has no choice but to take any job just so they can provide and help with the household.

We're overpopulated, so this is fine for a few decades.
And why are people talking about pensions? We don't have such a thing. I've never heard anyone talking about receiving any of it in a few decades already. If I ever became old and realized I failed to secure wealth that can sustain me, I'll just end things there instead of prolonging my sufferings and becoming a burden to others. I'll definitely die due to starvation and health issues anyway. So why prolong it?
I saw lots of old people, abandoned by their families, just die by the roadside. It will be my fate if I reach such age still poor.

Outsiders like you guys don't really know what is truly happening in one's country. This is indeed good news, it's not a bad thing that birth rates have decreased. It is actually a good thing because there's just too much traffic due to prosperity. People have increased significantly, and so has their wealth. I don't think this will impact Filipino people like how it did to China, South Korea, and Japan. You do know that lower birth rates will not only improve traffic but also other things, like lowering the prices of daily necessities as it's about supply and demand. It will also decrease the risk of air pollution and many more, but you can't see it because you are not here.
