  • Welcome back! Thanks for joining me while I process this raw Finn fleece, washing, carding, dyeing, spinning, and sampling it for a sweater I'm planning to knit for myself. I was so inspired by the sweater I dyed and knit for Ava, I had to have my own version. You also get to see her unbox her sweater and model it! We'll be using ProChem dye in Deep Orchid and using a Finn Fleece that comes from Jim Merrifield's farm! I'll be at Maryland Sheep & Wool this weekend, but I'll see you next week! Thanks, I love you, bye!

And that is why I enjoy your channel. You are not so focused on the technical. I believe sometimes we take out the joy of creating when we become so focused on the technical aspects of fiber prep.

I love the way that colour has broken and varies with the colours of the underlying fleece. You've given me ideas for some orphan, mixed colour merino I have in the studio.

That's great! I think the breaking is the best part of this color.

Luscious color! I love seeing the process from start to finish, thank you so much for sharing this with us!
Your advice about not letting our fear of doing something hold us back is spot on. Our fears keep us from being able to learn and succeed, and sometimes we really need that reminder, especially when trying new things with our fiber! Plus, the process of learning always includes failures with the successes. Sometimes I find that my failures also reveal new and creative ways of doing something! 😀

That turned into a really pretty grape-ish, wine-ish type heathered color for sure. Really like it. I agree...sometimes a 2-ply is nicer just because of the fabric it makes...like you said...lighter :)

Yes for sure! I was raised on the farm with every kind of animal. We would help out my dad while he sheared the sheep and we would help wash A LOT of wool outdoors, prepare it to be carded into batts with a drum carder. Then my mom would use it to fill the simple quilts she made for our own personal family use. Especially the cold winters when occasionally the wood stove would go out or just couldn't keep the temperature up. So no dyeing or spinning.@@FiberLoveDiary

Absolutely gorgeous color! Can't wait to see the final sweater. It is results like these that keep contributing to the itch to start dying. Maybe someday. Have to get over the perfectionism and fear of messing up that you talked about. Super guilty of that over here!

Even though I have done all this before, it is so good to see it over again. You are a master at your craft and I always come away with more knowledge when you're done than when I began watching. The slight variants of color make it so beautiful. I am spinning a gradient and will knit a shawl. I took 4 shades of pink roving and ran them through the carder. Then I laid them out in order light to dark. I took a sliver of color 1 and 2 and blended them to make a transition. I did that for the rest, too. I will chain ply to keep the colors in the gradient. I'm 3/4 done spinning. I'll be at this for a while. Enjoy the Sheep and Wool. So sorry I will be there after you leave. God bless you both!

I'm a felter, so I'm working on dying my own wool for a project that would be cheaper to do with bulk unprocessed carded wool from a local wool store in my tiny town, rather than buying it from hobby lobby
