This is the new Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze "Boutique Edition" Reference 79012M fitted with a bronze bracelet. Our 4K-video includes lume-, pool-, wrist-shots and all technical information you may need.
The characteristic elements of the new Black Bay Fifty-Eight model are a 39 mm bronze case, an aesthetic nod to the bronzes on old ships and other deep-sea diving equipment, but also the characteristic proportions of the first Tudor divers' watches dating from the second half of the 1950s, particularly the famous 7924 reference or "Big Crown", the first Tudor watch to be waterproof to 200 metres (660 ft), presented in 1958.
Tudor's choice of a "living" metal - in this case a high-performance aluminium bronze alloy used particularly in naval engineering for submerged parts required to demonstrate a high level of resistance to corrosion such as propellers, for example - ensures the development of a subtle and unique patina on the case of every watch to match its user’s habits. The Black Bay Bronze presents entirely satin-brushed finishes that guarantee the homogeneous development of this patina.
The combination of a domed dial in matt "brown-bronze", shaded concentrically from the exterior towards the centre, and a bezel presenting the same gold accents found on the hands and hour markers, completes the face of this model. The overall visual effect is of a rich, patinated object that might have battled the waves of the seven seas for years on its owner's wrist, and which is "made" for them and their lifestyle.
While Tudor has been exploring bronze in its collection for several years, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze model (100% the same bronze alloy as used so far) marks the first time that the litte sister of Rolex has produced a bracelet entirely from bronze. Its satin-brushed links adopting the style of Tudor bracelets of the 1950s and '60s, with rivets, are coordinated with the case and will develop a patina at the same pace. A new bronze clasp, also satin-brushed, with a redesigned cover and Tudor "T-fit" rapid adjustment system for the length, completes the total bronze look. Easy to use, requiring no tools and offering 5 positions, this practical system allows wearers of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze to carry out a fine, instant adjustment on an adjustment window along the entire length of the 8 mm bracelet.
The Tudor Manufacture Calibre MT5400, which equips the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze, displays hour, minute and second functions. It has the finish typical of TUDOR Manufacture Calibres: Its rotor in tungsten monobloc is openwork and satin-brushed with sand-blasted details, and its bridges and mainplate have alternate sand-blasted, polished surfaces and laser decorations. The Calibre MT5400 has been designed to ensure robustness, longevity, reliability and precision, as has its variable inertia balance, which is maintained by a sturdy traversing bridge with a two-point fixation. Together with its non-magnetic silicon hairspring, the Calibre MT5400 is certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), with its performance going beyond the standards set by this independent institute. In fact, where COSC allows an average variation in the daily running of a watch of between -4 and +6 seconds in relation to absolute time in a single movement, Tudor insists on between -2 and +4 seconds’ variation in its running when it is completely assembled.
Tudor is offering a five-year guarantee on all its products sold after 1 January 2020.

Are the dots bigger, than on the standard 58, or is it an optical illusion due to the numbers at 3, 6 and 9?

@@WatchAdvisor Very true! The watch is great looking. The brown dial/gold tone of the bronze is money, to my taste very attractive. I have been jonesing for a watch with blue lume, but in this case green lume seems more appropriate. The only problem I see is competition in that price range. Omega particularly, and Tudor's own 39mm and 41mm Black Bays (blue bezel 41mm for me, please). In all, though, looks like Tudor has another winner on their hands.

Great to see another honest review Alexander, pointing out that this video is of an as new example but explains that the case and bracelet will patina and this will depend on a number of different factors. This watch colour will tell a story of it's life if the patina does not get cleaned off. It's nice to see the clasp adjustment as well. I like the 3,6 and 9 on the dial that differentiates it from the other BB58 model dials. A tool watch that will take on the look of a nautical tool over time.

After wearing it for a couple of hours yesterday though, I noticed that this strong metallic smell lingered on my hand and in my room. Not to be dramatic but the smell made me dizzy. I’m worried that friends or relatives might notice the smell too because it’s quite strong even from a considerable distance away.
I contacted Tudor’s service center but they advised me to just wash with tap water and wipe the metal afterwards. After half an hour, the distinct metallic smell was still just as strong. So I’m not sure how to get rid of it. Did you encounter the same problem yet? Hoping for your response :)

Alas your are probably right about Rolex re-releasing a 3-6-9 Arabic dial Sub. Rolex doesn’t like retracing it’s prior designs but rather moving them incrementally fwd. They leave the vintage rehashing to Tudor. However much to my shock, Rolex did re-release a 36mm Explorer harking backwards to the classic dimensions which gives me a small degree of hope. This is the perfect watch to find going to a rummage sale, flea market, or thrift shop. When it patinas it looks like a fake watch. Nobody would think a watch company would use bronze, and they think it's fake. You get it for $25, $50, $75, or $100. You then service it, get it polished, and it's good as new. I salvaged many metal watch bracelets to put on watches that way.

    • @koolpep

No need to polish. Just wipe it down with lemon juice and it looks like new. And plenty of watch companies use bronze. Imagine having this 3-6-9-triangle or 12 dial in a 38/39 mm case, screw-down crown and the tool-less adjustment clasp on the bracelet. Also you didn't mention anything about how an all bronze watch will effect the skin of most people. My Captain Cook has a leather strap and titanium caseback to keep the bronze away from skin. Lastly you mentioned a trick on how to clean a bronze watch something about a dental cleaning tablet. Can you be more specific. Great review as always.

It is an bronze-aluminum alloy that will turn more brown/grey and not green and it does not affect the skin at all. To clean it just dissolve a dental cleaning tablet (e.g. Kukident) in water and put the watch head in there … in case of the Tudor the entire watch… watch what will happen…
