Thank Dr Tuzi. I am currently doing some research into language proficiency testing currently in use in the UAE. The major tests in use are IELTS (at tertiary level) and CEPA (at high school). One area I wish to focus on is the use of British/American English in each, whereas the localised variety of English in use here is Indian-English.
Do you have any thoughts on the issue of using localized varieties of WE in proficiency testing? I am a Brit and an IELTS examiner. However, I consistently see my students/candidates struggle with concepts used in the tests which they are unfamiliar with

Testing in this lesson refers to an actual question and answer type of event. A test would include a variety of questions that the student would have to answer. These questions would include true false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, ordering, Etc.
Assessment is a larger concept of which testing would be one possibility. Assessment is the general concept of employing a measurable tool to determine whether a student has met a particular criteria. An assessment can include test. However, an assessment can also include other activities such as a presentation, a speech, a written document, etc. Moreover, assessments can merely the observations that teachers notice while a student is interacting. For example, a teacher can provide an assessment based off of a student's casual conversation. A teacher can notice how a student pronounces a word or sound properly, how A student uses a gesture properly, how a student uses a strategy properly, etc. Finally, an assessment can be a survey or a rubric that teachers and students can use to evaluate someone's work. Students can also assess their own work.
