    I just got the black version of this watch and I absolutely love it. I was worried it would be too big for my seven and a quarter inch wrist, but its fit and feel is wonderful. I am 73, so I love the cyclops date and the legibility in general. The crown is a big improvement over Orient and Seiko. Really smooth and precise.
    Thank you for a great review.

    I love Seiko and Tissot (great product/value) but when I saw the 1963 model I was stuned. Then I went to the Sea-Gull homepage and I saw this model and thought that is a great ORIS competitor but for 1/4 of the price. It really looks like a bargain for what it offers, and It is an original model (all inhouse).

  • @thechinadesk
    @thechinadesk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've just ordered the blue version of the Ocean Star. Eagerly looking forward to receiving it. A beautifully designed dive watch, better looking in my eyes than many nominally "superior" divers costing four or even five figures.
    Hope the watch face elements such as the chapter ring and bezel line up well. I'm a retired architect, and somewhat OCD about certain things. Not everything of course, but obviously misaligned watch face elements are hard to ignore and overlook.
    I know the movement is impeccable based on Mark's coverage.
    If everything checks out externally I'll be a very happy camper.

    After quite a bit of research, I narrowed down my choice for a diver under $500 to this or the Glycine Combat Sub ( Goldeneye). It was close, I liked them both a lot.
    I didn't love the PVD plating on the Goldeneye, but I like the overall look of the watch a bit more, I trust the quality more as well and I am a bit of a Glycine fan in general, so I ended up going with the with the Combat Sub. Still, there's no law saying I can't someday have both.

    Thanks for the vid. I remember telling you about this exact model in another video of yours (also featuring Sea-gull watches). This looks all good to me, except that printed Sea-gull branding. It especially stands out as rather "flat" when there are applied markers and a sun-burst dial.

    • @tonyc5384
      @tonyc5384 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now that you mention it, it seems the flat branding is their style. Only the gold star stand out. Looking through their current line, over 200 watches, I found only one with applied logo on their air force chronograph model D304 and that's not even a Seagull logo.

      Seagull did raise the price on these, but I would have thought the Glycine Combat Sub is still significantly more expensive -- unless you buy the Glycine from a grey marketer like Jomashop. I think Long Island watch is an AD for Seagull now.

      Under Invicta's ownership, Glycine's prices on models that I've followed have dropped significantly. For the same line, newer builds with the eagle logo are priced lower than the stock with the crown logo. Just don't know what's the difference underneath for such large price difference. There's not much information out there.

My concern is most I've seen still aren't quite on even par, regarding fit & finish, and status level, compared with entry level Swiss models from Tissot, Victorinox, Hamilton, or even Bulova, and since being in the mid $400 range, are now squarely in their territory.

      Don't wait too long! I have added a total of 26 Chinese watches to my collection over the past year and I have no regrets whatsoever. After far too long the Chinese watch industry is becoming one of which the Chinese can be proud. The manufacturers of assorted tacky horrors and fakes are still in business, hard at work giving the overall Chinese watch industry a bad name, but three of the brands I have bought should, given time, change the opinions held by the more fair-minded buyers.
      SeaGull is one of those three brands; their movements and watches are now far more than just good value for money. Without the crippling greed of UK Customs and Excise I would now be waiting for the arrival of one of the watches our friend presents in this video, or one of the other SeaGulls I seem to remember he has already presented. (I'm old enough to plead some Amendment or other when I forget things...).

    OH So Close! 42mm, date at 6 o'clock and this would be perfect. Mark next time you talk to them, tell them 42mm, date at 6 killer watch.

    Hi Mark, do you know how to remove the ocean star's bezel? It's so tight, I couldn't get any play to insert anything to pry it open, not even a thin fishing line gets in there. Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions.

    Pretty nice watch, good review could equal positives and negatives a bit more. I would buy something else with that money.

    Well it does come from China and I am an American. 200m water resistance. ISO rated? Can we trust them when they say 200 m? I wouldn't do much more than snorkeling.

    Just wonder. Did you see the Zenith Defy Lab Oscillator watch? What do you think? Is this as good as Seiko Spring drive?

      Haven't seen it yet; will take a look. Zenith is not a brand that would ever do above the table business with an internet company. Old world thinking from old world people.

      Eternal Flame. FYI, Seagull has been making watches since 1955. Also, Seagull produces more movements than any other manufacturer in the world. . You are ignorant of the awesomeness of Chinese watch makers.

    They are copies so at least they do not pretend to be swiss watches. Still though made in China, so by definition they will not work for a long period. I am always scared shitless by their nuclear weapons. They either they will not work(happy scenario) or they will malfunction with disastrous results.
