Most Questionable Moments & Decisions Made By The Challenge Production Over The Seasons Pt1

  • MTV The Challenge has been on the air since 1998, has over 37+ seasons, and has over 500+ episodes. Of course there would be some moments in its history that would make the audience question what really happened or if there was some tomfoolery. Bananas won 7 seasons without any help? Was Ashley's Final Reckoning win legit or a matter of production wanting the next big iconic The Challenge moment? And don't get me started on The Challenge 37 format.
    Is there another questionable moment you had when watching The Challenge? Let me know down in the comments and I might talk about it in Part 2!
    Thanks for watching! #MTV #TheChallenge #TheChallenge38

    One thing that always bugged me is the inconsistency of when players are kicked off. For example, Sylvia head butted Marie and nothing happened, Fessy (who I don’t love but still) basically just face palmed josh and got kicked off…

    • @Lynsey17
      @Lynsey17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, they have never been consistent with it. I think sometimes they are more likely to get rid of someone if the incident was small but they feel like a liability. Tony and Camilla were kicked off Rivals III due to fighting but they never actually got physical.
      In recent seasons they do seem to be a little more trigger-happy about DQing people, though. I think they've learned it's best to air on the side of caution. Especially since viewers are a lot more vocal when they feel producers let things slide.

    My number 2 on weird production decision (behind David getting spit on) was the challenge letting CT come to the Duel 2 pretty much immediately after his brother was murdered… and then surprise surprise the guy with anger issues who is now dealing with death in his immediate got drunk and snapped. Then afterwards the Challenge goes out their way to make CT a pariah when it should’ve been very easy to avoid if the challenge actually showed empathy beforehand and revoked the invite and instead offered him free grief counseling

    • @jessicathompson6403
      @jessicathompson6403 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Agree, it's absurd that they allowed him on the show at the time. They were setting him up to get some good "angry CT drama" instead of looking out for his and the entire cast's best interests. I feel the same about when they allowed Devin back right after his dad passed for drama with Bananas, but at least they knew Devin isn't likely to punch someone.

    @trentmacintosh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Thank you so much for bringing up the spitting incident between David and Puck. I can still recall feeling bad for David in the midst of that episode when it aired. Production seemed to cave in to the popularity vote that was favored by the remaining cast, and I can't help but assume that the cast would've had NO problem calling for David's exit had he spit in Puck's face on camera. With that said, I glad that David at least got a chance to redeem himself on the most recent Homecoming season with his LA castmates.
    One incident that bothered me was how horrible Sam McGinn was treated by her San Diego teammate Frank Sweeney on the finale of Battle of the Seasons season 23. Understandable, the possibility of losing money can cause people to get heated and get verbal (Zach Nichols), however, shoving someone into the ground (Frank) because they aren't going fast enough is despicable. The reunion show hardly did anything to vindicate Sam, and I was turned off by the leniency that production seemed to have toward Frank. I think things might've been scoped differently had it been Zach, CT, Bananas, Jordan, Leroy, or any other (hetero) male that touched Sam in that way.

The problem with sticking Hunter-Ashley and Cory-Darrell(Cory orginal partner) in the house early is that Johnny completely outgunned and probably goes home much earlier in the season. I think there should be a separate video about the disgusting amount of racism and sexism that some of the competitors have gone through. MTV has a history of being very racist. I mean, it all started with Michael Jackson, and the cycle continues later on to the whole Leroy and Camilla situation. And the way they tried to apologize right after Leroy shared his side of the story but they could’ve done and said something when it first happened. Also, the JEK alliance is toxic AF. I remember, watching the Island season 15 or 16 and the sexist rants of Johnny and Kenny was just unbearable to watch. I’m surprised that Bananas is still on and people respect him. I know in the Inferno 2, there was a lot of controversy over Julie and her team switching the vote based on what the other team said and that caused a lot of disagreements. It was a loop hole but I still think that it should have been addressed as to why it was allowed. There's also the elimination match with Nelson and Fessy. Fessy should have been disqualified from that elimination after throwing sand in Nelson's face and all that. Even Nelson called him out on that, if I'm not mistaken. Another questionable moment is the fact that the men cheated on Battle of the Sexes. The girls would have won if they had knocked their puzzle over but the guys decided to cheat and use their puzzle to win...after that, literally every season showed the teams or individuals knocking over their puzzles so no one else could cheat. Re The Battle of the Sexes and the men cheating - that was the first season I watched and it's the only final I remember to this day. I also recall that the men decided early that whoever was on the bottom of the point ladder would be eliminated and everyone agreed to that. Clean and fair. Perform or go home. But the women were totally political - protect your friends and eliminate your enemies. If I recall correctly, the women's leader was named Ellen and she was beautiful, smart and had lots of endurance. I also don't remember seeing her ever again.

      @@nelsonhemstreet3568 The cheating aspect I was referring to happened during the finals when the women built their puzzle and didn't knock it down. The guys then went over to the women's puzzle, took it apart, and built their puzzle becuase they didn't know how to solve their puzzle. The women made a huge deal out of it and totally understandable too because following that season, the majority of the time that there was a puzzle involved in a final or during a challenge, people started to knock it down if they could. Not always but I think that's what triggered them to start doing that

Meanwhile, Kam was barely even trying to get to her objective and crushed Paulie. I was cool with it cuz I couldn’t stand Paulie, but it was still a ripoff for him. I don't really like Tori but she won that season 37 finale, KC got handed the win. The season 35 (Total madness) wasn't a paire season, there was suppose to be 1 winner, Jenny won that finale all the way, they just made 2 winners because Bananas was second, if it was anybody else other than Bananas, Jenny would have been the solo winner. It was the closest he ever come to winning since season 28, I think production knew that if he had lost this time again after coming this close, he would have had a breakdown and probably retire forever. People use to joke saying that he was cursed sincere stole the money from Sarah, that's why he never won ever since. The Ashley/Hunter win was definitely rigged because they wanted someone to stole the money. Final reckoning had the worst, most unfair format ever, a total shit show.

    I haven't watched the most recent seasons bc I didn't like that it had turned into the Johnny Bananas show. I don't think he was the ratings draw that MTV believed him to be.
    In that vein, I could easily believe the Total Madness scripts were written intentionally vague bc they wanted the flexibility to decide based on the finalists what to do. I also believe the Rivals III format of one partner getting to decide to keep or split the money was an 11th hour decision when they realized they could milk more drama out of Sarah and Johnny. Sarah's not my favorite person but she got SCREWED that season.
    Also, Sarah's Adderall accusations didn't come out years later. If you watched her content, she said immediately after the final aired that he had pills. She literally only showed up to the reunion bc it was a contractual obligation and they could have refused to pay her the season fee if she skipped it (all cast members get paid to be on the show, the amount is based on how many seasons you've done). She's been done with The Challenge since then bc of how badly they screwed her.

Natalie&Paulie VS Kam/Kayleigh, Natalie/Paulie were given an incredibly unfair equalizer that prevented Paulie from even moving with the bands. Flash forward Natalie takes on brad and kyle in a very physical and dangerous elimination - no equalizer. Then they take on two men again (bananas/tony) no equalizer. Kudos to Natalie for winning both of those, but still incredibly unfair.

    - As much as it pains me to say, allowing Leroy to play Rivals 1 with his friend Mike doesn’t make a ton of sense

    • @Lynsey17
      @Lynsey17 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, the history of one partner DQing has been inconsistent but it all comes down to alternates. Every season they include a few alternates that get flown to location .
      If someone loses a partner and there's an alternate that makes sense to sub in, they do it. How early into the season it happens matters too, I think. Normally they only sub in at the very start of the season bc the alternates don't stick around the entire time. My guess is that Mike and Dustin were an alternate team for Rivals so Mike was ready to jump in. If there isn't a possible sub, both people go home. It's why Sarah has been DQed twice through no fault of her own and Leroy has lost 2 partners but still been able to play (the 2nd time bc Theresa had only recently been eliminated in Ex's II so she was still there). It sucks, but it's whatever makes most sense for production bc DQing a whole team in the first episode or 2 changes the plan for the rest of the season.

    The Puck situation still irks me. I can’t stand that season mainly for that situation alone. Plus as you mentioned the whole wedding episode dedicated to him. So frustrating.
    I think another questionable moment would be in the OG Battle of the Seasons was Belou and her baby but did you maybe cover that in the biggest WTF moments already 😅

    Invasion of the Champions. To be a champion you have to beat a cha… wait, how’s that go. Oh wait, that’s right. To be a champion you have to come on and watch all the champions eliminate each other until there’s only one left, and then compete in a dumb partner based final against them. Oh yeah!

    I`m not from the Us so I cant be sure the same rules and legislations apply, but here in Brazil (I work in the promotional awarding business) you can only have a high value performance based competition (money prize, cars, houses, etc) IF the rules (including every possibility of ties and DQs) are registered with the national banking association prior to the start of any competition and rules can not be altered after that or it can be classified as fraudulent. Every draw has to be done with a live audience, every point system need to be set ahead of the competition.... MAYBE the US follows a different set of rules or MAYBE they manage to bend those rules by competing abroad.... Can`t be sure, but if any of these seasons were rigged within this system, it was planned beforehand and it becomes a non-scripted reality TV instead os a competition show...
