I had two Chibsons a few years ago that I modded and the end guitars were wicked nice. I was shocked how well the frets and the neck had been done and the guitars looked nice ! Tuners, Bridge, pickups, nut. Thats about it, one of them needed the truss rod tweaked a little bit. Blown away, ended up giving my ex's son one of them (he loves the guitar) and the other sits in a jam room. They play nice and sound nice. Seems every year these guitars get better and better with the frets and neck work. They are never going to come with good bridge, pots, pickups, nut or tuners. So prepare to spend a couple hundred minimum, but the end guitar was WELL worth it.

@@bryanmanx Exactly. I own real Gibsons from the late 90s. I try out Gibsons all the time and i am in disbelief how bad the quality is on their guitars. Those Chibsons played better than $2700 Gibsons ! Ive been playing for about 28 years or so. The last decent era of Gibson was before the weigh relief bodies and stuff. 1990s. But i cant imagine spending $2700 when for $450-600 you can build a killer guitar that plays so well. Believe me im sure there are plenty of junk Chibsons. But in the past 5-7 years the quality has gone up. They know how to do frets now. That in itself is scary. For the $240 ish gamble its worth it imho especially if you were thinking about spending $2700 on a real Gibson. If ya have that type of money take the $240 gamble and have some fun and learn something along the way. Just funny when you see people who trash these guitars and they KNOW already that the pickups and tuners etc are trash, but they complain about it in their videos anyways. Your not gonna get a perfectly setup guitar for $240. But what you will get is the basis for making yourself a wonderful guitar. $450-600 and on top of it, it says Gibson if you want. But most places will put what ever you want on the headstock.

@@ctcards2636 Im getting my sister who has a machine to make me a Chibson headstock logo ;D. I play this thing everyday and it amazes me when I finally break out the tuner and its spot on after a week and a half of playing. you dont get that with a gibson and that crazy headstock angle. I have recorded a few songs as well and the tone I am getting out of my amp with the Seymour Duncan saturday night special pickups is sweet and warm. I have had quite a few guitars over the years and this one I cannot put down.

@@bryanmanx Id say for every 10 of these Chibsons sold, 4-6 are pretty well made guitars. The other 4 may not be so nice. Def pays to research who you buy one of these off. But that gets back to what i was saying about Gibson, i dont think their quality is any better. Id say every other Gibson i pick up is not a very well made guitar these days. Sit down with it long enough and there are issues that should not exist on a $2700 guitar you will discover. :-) Also the two i had stayed in tune fine, no issues. I seriously had to laugh because i was not expecting these to be this good. I want to order a few more and mod them and give them away to some of my friends and band mates. One of my band members has a $3600 Les Paul semi hollow model and he has issues with the neck, wasnt put in right. Can get the action correct, neck is twist, have to lower bridge til its touching the body and even then its not low enough. Guitar is a mess. When he tried out one of these, he was unaware that it was a fake and started jamming on it and he said "Wow Gibsons quality must have gone up recently!" !!!!! lol. The fake blew is $3600 real Gibson away. Wasnt even close. Thats my issue with Gibson. If you knew you were gonna get a quality guitar when spending that much, i can see why some people would want to do that. But the quality does not match the price. Just because it says Gibson on it ? Bogus.

@@JEFFERYPAUL1 it's kind of a crap shoot. If it's at Les Paul Custom type I found mine to be 10 mm. If it's a Les Paul Standard it's probably an 8 mm. Nonetheless I purchased a set of kluson lockers that were 10 mm and I had to ring the hole up in my standard from 8 to 10. Best thing to do is pull a tuner and measure the hole. And the other trick is if the tuner uses a press in bushing in the headstock it's probably not 10 mm. If it uses a feral nut it's probably 10 mm.

i have 3 LP style Agiles, all have a full 3/4 maple cap, not a veneer or photo. All 2nd hand, 2 cost $400, 1 cost $250. 2 have new pots and pups, 1 all ive done is different strings, done a set up, but this thing sounds a lot like Koss, not me, the guitar, the tone is awesome for trying to play Free! The other 2 one has 57 and 57 plus pups, CTS pots with full Jimmy wiring.Againg i gave it a set up, really does sound and play awesome. The last has SD Whole Lotta Humbuckers, CTS pots with coil split on both, pure tone jack, i did the frets as well as set up. Those SD's are incredible, oh, i used emerson pio's as well, and this thing has incredible tonal range! For a total of around $1800 i have 3 guitars that all play great, have incredible sound, all different, but awesome, and i would definitely put them against any $2500 Gibson! I've owned an Austin LP guitar (Indonesia) which was not bad at all (as in did NOT need any upgrades). But honestly the 2 real Les Pauls I have are both Classics, one is a classic limited edition Teaburst faded (nice flame on it) and the other is an Ebony. I know the flame you see is likely a veneer or paper (more likely paper). Both of my Gibsons are exceptional and I'm super happy with my purchases. But I did play a lot of Gibsons before finding the right ones... thats the thing, and that goes with every guitar (Fenders...) the one you first pick up in the store may not feel right or have a lot of dings or customer demo scars. It takes time to find the right one.

I have purchased recently a couple Chibsons (LP and a ES-345) and a Chickenbacker 325 and I am extremely pleased with them, right out of the box (well, I had to do a complete setup but I had to do that on the real Gibsons and Fenders I own as well). I do understand the consequence of someone passing these off as the real thing, but that will never be me. That being said I would guess Gibson, et al are very happy to sell someone their hardware/electronics to upgrade a Chibson. Those parts have a very high profit margin.

ONLY people for whom money is no object should ever buy a Gibson LP! Look, you get a Chibson, do the recommended upgrades and tweaks - to the ear only, VERY few will ever know they're not hearing an actual Gibson LP. Add in the fact that the Epiphone LPs aren't exceptionally built either. Ethically, I think I would not have a fake Gibson logo put on my Chibson. At the end of the day, as you can swap out maybe $300 in parts to turn a Chibson into a very nice playing guitar, and as their build quality has become rather impressive the last couple of years, I'd go for it! For me, the bottom lines are the quality of the sound and playability. Ultimately, you simply can't hear a logo or legacy, but you CAN hear and see tons of marketing hype as well as feel a much lighter wallet associated with the the purchase of a Gibson LP, and to a lesser degree, the Epiphones as well. Now, will you ever recoup your investment on a Chibson? That's questionable, perhaps unlikely. But if you plan to have a great guitar with a FAR more modest investment that you plan to play for a very long time, a Chibson could be well worth it. My three cents, anyway.

I think that's the pitfall some people make though. People treat all Gibsons as automatically the best for them, whereas every player needs to find a good match and not be afraid to mod it to their tastes. I've seen some tasteful mods to Gibson Studios and even Standards that have been some of the greatest guitars I've ever played. Not all Gibsons are great, but the ones that are usually blow everything else out the water when plugged into a good amp that lets it shine

Realistically, I’d recommend anyone to just buy an epiphone. A good way to get into the LP market. Chibsons are a hit or miss, and are usually a miss. Nuances like the scale length being off, neck angle and how it’s been set. Chibsons are pretty junk. If you want a reliable guitar, I’d recommend an epiphone, as they’re gonna have much better QC. Only thing chibsons are cool for is for experiments and projects imo.

Pinch harmonics. Play with a rounded corner of the pick and roll the skin of your thumb close to the edge of the pick so when the note is played the string will barely strike the skin of your thumb, this will create a harmonic squeal.

There are better guitars for less with QC, warranty and support. And working components, correctly placed bridge etc... the only reason to spend more on a Chibson is because you care what the headstock says... if you just want a good Les Paul the options are endless. However they don't say Gibson on the headstock.

@@bryanmanx Fair enough but you never know what you get. Sometimes it simply can't be intonated because the bridge isn't in the right place etc... electronics non functional, sub par craftsmanship... in the age of extremely good sub 400€ guitars I don't see the point. I got a Harley Benton SC550+ for 370€. Perfect all stock. Locking tuners, EMG pickups, very high quality fretwork, beautifully made. And I can send it back anytime, I can get a refund or a discount if somethings off and I prefer it to some real Gibbons, like a Les Paul Studio, which is quite bland in comparison, no binding nothing. 10 years ago sure but now you can get amazing guitars from actual legal manufacturers for less than a Chibson + basic upgrades. But if you sanded off the logo fair enough. I'd rather mine just says Epiphone or Harley Benton or Cort or Ibanez... the age of cheap guitars has begun. Don't believe me? Buy a TE62DB. 158€. Lake Placid Blue is my recommendation. Neck perfect, pickups wonderful, pots fine, build great, action super low, fretwork near flawless, just gave it a polish and rounded the neck a little for a vintage feel. It's superior to any Squier and I would use it even if I had a Fender because I'm not afraid to scratch it or damage it. Best Telecaster I played since a made in US Fender, which was different nor necessarily better...

@@221b-l3t yea I've got a really good 86 strat that feels like it got blessed. Recently picked up a $160 schecter that is surprisingly good. I've also got an f hole Kay that I've had since new for nearly 30 years that is fantastic. I assumed this chibson was gonna be a junker when I ordered it but I was just curious more than anything. I do see a Harley benton in my future. I've heard many great things. The chibson will always remain as a funny quirk of a guitar that leaves people shaking their heads. If it ever warps or does some weird Chinese stuff I can guarantee my $600 in upgrades will go right over to the Harley benton. BTW if anyone ever tells you that pickups are not important they have never played with those duncan Saturday night specials. They had a bit of a price tag but damnit man.

@@bryanmanx Duncans are okay but if you want true perfect tone, go for Toneriders. Alnico 2 Classic are replacing all my Duncan and Gibson pickups. I actually would wager my SC550+ would beat the Chibson. Because it has annoyed people. If you told me it cost 1500€ I would think wow, the fretwork is nicer than my Gibson and the tuning stability sure is better with the 14° headstock and reduced side angle behind the nut. Plus they have a cutout on the neck so high fret access is good for a Les Paul. You can always return Thomann stuff so I highly recommend giving either the SC550+ or the TE62DB a try. I have very expensive guitars but really my Harley Telecaster and Tonerider Epiphone are my best sounding guitars. Depends where you live, America can be expensive with shipping from Germany but Europe it's hell of a deal. Not quite sure how they do it. People who never heard of HB just assume it's some boutique Telecaster that cost two grand or more.
But DEFINETLY try Toneriders. Half the price of Duncans and they sound better than plenty of original 1958 PAFs. Alnico 2 Classic that is, I can't vouch for the rest. My JB/59 loaded Les Paul is retired. Sound not satisfactory. I'll sell them both for two sets of Toneriders one for the Les Paul and one for the Gibson. It has nice pickups, Burstbuckers. Great stuff. But it doesn't come close to the Epiphone in sound now. I also put in coil split CTS pots and an orange drop capacitor. So lovely... give it a try if you're into value. I'm annoyed now my expensive guitars don't have locking tuners because the ones in the Benton are fantastic but it feels wrong putting them in an LTD or Gibson... regardless I will proceed. Tuning stability goes above what the tuners cost or what brand they are, especially on a Gibson style guitar that's not exactly super stable. I swear my Gibson is the worst. The Epiphones have the reduced headstock angle and that helps a bunch. Shame Gibson chooses tradition over function... but it's what the people want.

You should probably tell people that the Chibson Rosewood is NOT Rosewood and the Ebony is NOT Ebony, the fret wire is garbage and will wear at least twice as fast as normal, all electronics are junk, pickup are crap, AND it's always going to questionable at to what you actually receive from them. I have 5 or six of them - and I've modified them all - but I understand that the necks will likely warp easier because they use cheap wood and glue. They seem good...for a while....but after a few years, you're definitely going to see issues pop up - bad truss rods, the finish wears much faster, etc. They're fine for what they are, but if you buy a $2500 Gibson, it's going to be worth at least $2,000 for the next 10 years. These are counterfeit copies that will never increase in value. You can pretty easily find them for $150. You get what you pay for.

    • @bryanmanx
      @bryanmanx  ปีที่แล้ว

A year in and I've had no issue. I was curious what the fretboard was. I assumed nothing was as listed. When I removed the nut I could see the tight grain of the fretboard wood at the end. I honestly thought I'd see a different color at the end discovering a dark stained pine fretboard. but it's the same color throughout the fretboard. The clearboat on the body allows a view of the solid piece of wood underneath and the lack of joints in the neck. Unlike the $150 chibsons this one had perhaps a smidge more care at $350. But yes you always get what you pay for but it's amazing what Chinese can do for so little. If the same Luthier were to build with top end wood and accessories the result would be unmatched.

You all are missing a couple of important things, one i don't like support the communist party of China so I go out of my way to buy elsewhere when possible, and 2, when you save or make payments to something you desire and pay it off you tend to hold and take care of said item. In the late 70s early 80s my parents bought brand new TV that cost 1200 and you take care of it, no rough housing around it, clean it ect, it was a major thing. I work with a guy that let his kid break 3 tv's in a year, why? Because he would just buy another for 150 bucks and not care. Cheap and disposal isn't good and if you hang on to a fake chibson and hand it down it means nothing, when I hand my Gibson, Dean, Charvel etc to my kid it means something 20 years down the road.
Not hating on anybody's choices, play what you want and spend how you want. One final thing, Yes Slash played a fake les paul but it wasn't built in China, I'm pretty sure it was build by an American luthier and when Slash had money he bought a Gibson because he knows somehow it feels different, it is an accomplishment in a way.
Like I said, whatever makes you happy, but I thought I would offer a different view. It does sound good 👍

Fortunately these don't come from the communist party but from extremely skilled craftsmen who just happens to be Chinese. Does the communist party benefit? If someone can do this for pennies on the dollar what are the craftsmen actually charging for.
